I am open to correction that beans are 44% protein? What would this equate to in grams of protein in a tin?

I'm guessing you mean baked beans. A tin of Heinz baked beans has 4.7g per 100g. There's 5g of sugar per 100g.

Batchelors No Added Sugar Beans have 4.5g of protein per 100g but less than 2g of sugar.

Beans aren't 44% protein. Baked beans are <5% protein

44% of the calories might come from protein, but that's different altogether.

So what are in beans? Is it carbohydrates?

17% carbs, 4% protein 0.2% fat. Not high protein by any stretch.

and what makes up the rest?

3-4% fibre, trace amounts of micro-nutrients (vitamins, sodium, etc)
And then the water makes up the majority

Plain beans would have a high % or protein and lower carbs/sugar. Due to the absence of a tomato sauce.

I always thought beans are high in protein? Is this just baked beans you're referring to? I usually add beans to most meals (kidney, mung, cannelini etc) as I don't eat much meat.

Combine rice and beans for a good protein carbohydrate mix.

I add kidney beans to a lot of dishes, they are very satiating and very cheap

    One 29cent can has:

    228 calories
    16.6g of protein
    1.4g of fat
    36g of carbs (14.9g fiber)
