Chris will anchor alongside Alison Comyn when the channel’s news programmes, Ireland Live and Ireland Live at 10, launch on Monday, January 5th 2015. He will also continue to co-present Newstalk’s breakfast show.

Says he's staying with the breakfast show, fair play to him, he never seems to be 'off' always seems to be involved in news etc. http://www.independent.ie/entertainment/television/newstalks-chris-donoghue-to-join-utv-ireland-as-news-anchor-30681795.html

Glad he's not leaving I enjoy the breakfast show with himself and Ivan.

PK signed up to a TV gig with them as well, so there's precedent there. Good luck to him.

Remarkable career progression for him. Will probably be a mainstay in Irish politics and current affairs on TV and radio for the next 40 years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,918 ✭✭✭yosser hughes

Bizarre! He has no depth and struggles with anything weighty. He should have acquired some gravitas by now but he hasn't. He comes across as a little boy.
He's old fashioned actually, and not in a good way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,222 ✭✭✭DellyBelly

Good for him. Currently one of the most talented media people we have. Really enjoy the morning show with himself and Ivan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71,138 ✭✭✭✭L1011

Doing a 6am on-air (so, due to the content, probably a 4:30 start) breakfast show and even the 6pm news is going to kill him in short order. One has to give, I suspect he's just hedging his bets and Newstalk will go after a few months unless they can give him a daytime slot.

Surprised at this. He still comes across like the work experience student when on the radio. No real depth to his knowledge, poor questioner, inarticulate, easily outmanoeuvred by politicians - ask yourself why they are always happy to talk to him. He went from making the tea to fronting the show and it shows.

Do they not come on air at about 7 though? Either way I remember reading an interview with him before and he says he'd struggle to be awake for the 9 o clock news, he might be doing some specialist stuff rather than day to day.

Can't agree with that at all.

Yeah it's nonsense tbh. It's one thing to criticise but this kind of total dismissal of someone who is clearly a competent broadcaster is silly.

This could be a potentially massive blow to the quarter to eight banter that I desperately need.

I wouldn't agree that he has no real depth to his knowledge, he does his research alright, but his is inarticulate and politicians don't take him seriously.

At Brian Cowen's resignation press conference Chris totally misjudges the mood and tries to grill him in front of the whole media pack. Cowen glares at him and asks "do you really want to get in a fight with me"...Chris pips down. It was excruciating to watch. In fairness that was a while age, but more recently he try to paxman Gerry Adam's over IRA membership and came off a very distant second best. I never really heard him nail anyone he was interviewing.

As for some of the stuff he comes out with..."we were all knobs in the boom"..."thats the first time I saw boobies"....etc...etc

He's likeable enough guy, but I wouldn't class him as a competent broadcaster. Not yet anyway.

Competent broadcaster is one thing but that's not the same as being a competent interviewer, political journo, etc. I find him really really poor. I also think he's also quite immature based on his regular remarks about kids and marriage. But I do listen regularly to the show, I find it easy listening when compared to Morning Ireland. I sort of look at him and Ivan's show as being like the Ian Dempsey version of Morning Ireland. I do wounder though to be fair to him how much of his content is driven by editorial control, he did make a telling remark a few weeks ago when Ivan said something about being his boss an Chris said that Denis O'Brien was his boss. I wounder how much of a bass he is.

I'm surprised by some of the comments regarding him. The way I see it, he's worked himself up in Newstalk, UTV are no slouches I'm sure they want this to be a success so he's had competition. Also its nice to see someone outside of the RTE Nepotism stables getting a break. Best of luck to him.

Indeed, he's a young up and coming broadcaster with a bright future. I wish him the best.

    Well, I did say...

The Gerry Adams interview wasn't though and he regularly tries that type of thing and it never really comes off.

Fair play to him, the guy's only 30. But I'd Imagine getting up at 5 or 6am doing a radio show, THEN a tv bulletin would be a killer on anyone. Burning the candle at both ends

I love the banter between himself and Ivan in the mornings!
I really hope he stays with Newstalk but I can't see him being able to do both for long.
Good luck to him and hope all goes well.

Seems like a nice guy but hopelessly lightweight. He doesn't command the respect of his interviewees. They know well they can run rings around him.

It's amazing... he works really well with Ivan but with none of the other presenters... especially bad was the mother/son partnership he had with Nora Casey... That was some bad radio..

I might have agreed with this two years ago but he has become a lot stronger since then and is a very competent interviewer now. He takes no crap from senior politicians anymore.

    Glad he's not leaving NT.

I wish the man the best of luck.

but at least he had a go, unlike the RTE lifers who wouldn't jeopardise their exorbitant share of the license fee.

Remember the night RTE cut Vincent Brown short when he was getting stuck into biffo after the bailout?

works fine with Shane Coleman when Ivan is away.

and anyone with Nora Casey is bad radio.

I love Chris and Ivan. I listen to Morning Ireland from 7am, till Des Cahill at 8.40. Then hop in the car for newstalk.

so i don't rely on NT Breakfast for my news, but I enjoy their take on the news.

That's their strength. Chris has the common man's sense of ethics, complemented by ivan's harsh political acumen. I'd hate to see either leave. Imagine having to go back to john murray:eek::eek::eek:

Btw, if Donoghue is doing the 2200 television news and then doing a three hour radio slot 0700-1000..
    will standards slip?

He'll just become a night owl. Home at 11am, sleep til 7pm, into the UTV studio for research and prep, do the UTV show, then a couple of hours for 'lunch', off to Newstalk for the breakfast show.

Chris isn't going to be presenting the news on UTVI every night.

After 6 months he'll know if the TV gig is a runner and can decide then.

He does look quite young in those photos.

I thought it was ok. 1 or 2 gaffes/miscues (not all from him), no biggie.

Think they're both a little uncomfortable with the low desks and holding the tablets. They don't know what to do witht their hands, nowhere to hide.

Hope they do ok, can't see any reason to wish them anything but all the best.

I think they are both good on the UTV news so far. Certainly their diction is far clearer than many on RTE news.

Looked at it again tonight having not seen it since last Tuesday. I think he's improved remarkably in a week...looks much more relaxed and at home, and sounds more like he does on the radio. Looks very young but that will be a plus in years to come. I hope he doesn't burn out and can keep up the 2 shows....love himself and Ivan in the mornings.
