    Earlier this year a would be politician and the leader of the LibertyGB political party in the UK (Yes I've never heard of them too) was arrested for quoting Winston Churchill.

    Paul Weston stood on some steps and quoted a word for word transcript of a passage about Islam, written by Winston Churchill, during a campaign speech.

    When arrested he did not tell the Police that it was Churchill he had quoted, however due to the complaint of a passer by Mr Weston was charged with breaching a Section 27 Dispersal Notice.

    Whilst in custody Mr Weston was told that the charges of breaching a Section 27 Dispersal Notice would be dropped and a more serious charge of Racially Aggravated Crime, under Section 4 of the Public Order Act, which carries a potential prison sentence of 2 years.

    June of this year and after a media campaign to highlight the arrest, the CPS decided to drop the charges. Obviously someone somewhere decided that it would be highly embarrassing to have someone jailed for speaking the words of Britain's most famous Prime-minister and cult hero.

    Can you imagine if we had something similar in Ireland? Man arrested for quoting the joke Enda Kenny made;
    "A Moroccan barman 'with shiny teeth' had been asked why a cocktail was called a 'Lumumba' and replied it was named after 'some ****** who died dans la guerre'. according to The Guardian."

    Has the UK gone soft when it comes to offensive words and what people consider to be offensive? Or are the Police right to make the arrest and charges?

    Would you want to see something similar in Ireland?

    Well at least time around, unlike another recent case, the police did not have to invent an "outraged" passer-by to ensure that a speaker was taken into custody.

    Someone wrote this in the 2005 thread.

    I like the PD's and I like Bertie Ahern, i think having the greatest leader in europe is good for Ireland on all political fronts.

    He could be arrested and prosecuted for that now.
