Is the VW Golf the best cool car that is most widely available around?

Had ideals on a Ford Focus but the newer versions are all mostly diesel and not petrol.

Maybe OP you need to tell us your definition of a cool car.

    For me it's a Chevy Impala 1967..

I thought the Audi A4 was the cool car to have.

It's only cool if you have a 10" sunstrip, slammed "lower than your grannies nipples", has an "rs4" kit and badge to prove and finally molested with a set of 911 997 wheels.
Then it's "cool" and at this stage more generic than having a standard one

the golf is possibly the least cool, generic car you can get.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,340 ✭✭✭mullingar

    A golf is cool?

    No.

Just clever Vw marketing for perceived coolness when it really is not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,352 ✭✭✭alias no.9

Golf, the car that people who think they're supposed to be cool, think they're supposed to buy.

    ZOMG veedubbers 4 lyf #vagfaglyfdawg

As for a cool petril car, perhaps one that keeps cool in traffic and doesn't overheat....?

Super rare and so much fun. Seen one in Ireland but there are mountains of them in the Canaries.

    Nothing German is cool.

If you want cool, buy Italian or French.

    New Clio is cool imo.

Civic FD2 Type R based on rarity?

I would say a Citroen DS 4 or an Alfa Romeo Brera.

+1 for the Brera, pity they never made a fast one, I know there was the v6 but its a bit dull to drive by all accounts.

Staying in the relms of what you would see on the road on a day to day basis I think and RX-8 is cool... And an OPC Astra (in blue)

Instead of thinking 'cool' think of something you can sell on again easily and has reliability, nothing at all wrong with the golf, just a lot of vw golf bashing goes on in this forum OP

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,033 ✭✭✭DoctorEdgeWild

Can't think of anything less cool than a Ford Focus or modern day Golf.

For me, Honda Crx mk2. You can get a nice one for under 2k and you'll have a reliable, fun to drive, stunning to look at car.

As with any discussion of this kind, 'cool' is entirely subjective.

OP asked for a cool car, not a reliable, sellable car... Im sorry but a Golf is just not cool... not even at all...

The E63 Coupe (BMW 6 Series) in black looks cool imo.

Mother of Jaysus, if people think that Golfs and A3s are cool there is no hope...!

Nothing particularly wrong with either of them, but cool they are most definitely not....

A3 saloon is kind of cool.

God no. I was behind a brand new one of these the other day. Really uppity looking woman driving it. Probably though I was admiring her expensive new Awwwwdi. I was looking at it thinking you poor foolish sheep your ina slightly glorified golf could ya not stretch to the friggin a4 at least... The polar opposite of cool maybe?

She has good taste and you seem to have a lot of brand baggage. Everyone has a different definition of 'cool'. But a small footprint, impeccable design and build, understated looks that don't try too hard, super classy cabin. All comes closer to 'cool' for me than most.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 585 ✭✭✭ShaunieVW

Entirely subjective. To me golf GTIs are cool, especially the mk7 as its gone back to the days of being nimble and lighter than the standard golf Alu roof etc. Hondas are for knackers( save a couple) and Alfas are definetly cool. I drive an a3. Ancient being an 01 but its a 1.8t so a little bit different to the normal daysul stuff. Its cool to me but I dont expect people to be jealous when I drive by lol! Again this is only my opinion. If we all had the same opinion then it would be boring.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,235 ✭✭✭✭Cee-Jay-Cee

You cannot use the word 'cool' and VW Golf in the same sentence. 'Boring' 'dull' 'drab' uninspiring' 'mundane' are all perfectly acceptable but not cool. The same goes for the Ford Focus. It's an econobox car and will never be cool, not even the RS/ST versions.

(And I say this as the owner of a Golf)

GTi is a different story! Regualr golfs...not cool. In fact is there a cool hatchback on sale at the moment?

I think the BRZ and GT86 are pretty cool actually, and whatever the american variant is called... Scion something

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,594 ✭✭✭tossy

This is Irish motoring all over, there isn't just one Golf, there isn't just one Focus, or A4, or 3 series.

It is possible to buy a very cool Golf and a very Dull one, same goes for every model of car. You can buy a golf that is 'cooler' than a 5 series, if by cool you mean better spec'd,faster, better to drive etc.

You can buy an A4 that's cooler than an A8. You can buy a Focus that's cooler than an A4 etc etc

Do you get it OP ?

Smart Roadster Coupe is cool petrol car

Golf GTi's were cool for a short while in 1985
That was also the last time VAG were as reliable as people think they are
Any petrol car is cooler than a diesel

Jesus really? how did i get away unscathed with the last 5 VAG cars i've owned over the last 12 years and put up maybe 150k ? Some of them cool to my eyes and all of them bullet proof. Am i the lucky one ?

Nissan GTR. Although "widely available" is stretching it.

More boards.ie sweeping generalisation bullcrap. How many have you driven or owned since "1985"?
For some realistic balance (to support Tossy!) I've owned various VAG's over the last 10-12 years including 2 GTI's, a GTD, and an Audi A3. I can't recall any of them causing me a moments bother outside of regular maintenance.
