How could someone who is morbidly obese be considered fit for such a role?

If She was fit people would complain she is at the gym more than the office.

Does the minister for transport have to be able to drive.
Does the minister for justice have to be a guard or lawyer.
Does the minister for children have to be a child.

The health minister is not setting a good example here, but I dont see how it would impact her work.....unless her office is at the top of a tall flight of stairs.

    I would

And that would be their own problem. A fit person will usually only spend less than an hour a day 4 or 5 times a week exercising and yet the kind of people who make those stupid comments will be the ones who will spend most of their time sitting and watching television or movies and do no exercise to go along with their sh!t diets. Anyone who ever says something along those lines is an insecure loser who'd rather make excuses for themselves to try to feel better about being out of shape than just admitting to reality.

It would only concern me if she was making policies which effected me.
    As she's not.........

I don't see how her health has that much influence. If anything she has a better understanding of how easy it is to slide into the trappings of bad food choices.

From what the Belgians on reddit said, shes a incredibly capable politician. She is upfront about what she is doing, doesn't attempt the usual political non answer crap and has so far made quite logical and fair decisions in her various roles for the betterment of the state.

I know nothing about our current minister for Health but for somebody who is effectively the leader of over 100,000 employees, you could really do with a fortune 500 CEO .

James Reilly wasn't exactly the picture of good health either, and Brian Cowan held the position for 3 years too.

Does the minister for finance have to have a bank account :pac:

The first two would definitely help. The last one should be a single parent.

On topic, health is of course much more than fat reduction but tbh imo it reflects poorly if the minister for health is severely overweight.

    MAN THE HARPOONS!!!

    Sorry, I could not resist.

Sorry, but I dont really see how a fatty like that could know even a thing about health, let alone be a Minister of Health. Its like making Hippy a Minister of defence...

Most of the ministers in the Irish cabinet don't know a thing about the department they head.

Unless our teachers are the ultimate all-rounders.

I never understood politics, they put a "politician" in charge of a department of government, someone who basically won a popularity contest and their parent may have been a politician. "Sure we'll stick you in transport and see how you get on"

Surely these kinds of roles should be based on an interview where a group of peers elect the most qualified person for the job. Much like how a CEO or CTO would be appointed, you wouldnt let any auld eejit run a fortune 500 company. Yet we put complete numtpies in charge of running departments for an entire country

    /rant

The civil service runs the department.
    The minister sets policy.
"Yes Minister" is as accurate today as it was in the eighties.

It's the minions who do the actual work. Always has been.

The ministers are just the gimps that get paid to read the scripts.

Can I also add. A higher rate of obesity results in a higher rate of health issues which can cause a higher rate in health insurance claims...which can cause a higher cost of insurance cover. This is a contributing factor in why obese people being ministers for health is ironic.

Obese people who claim it's their body and they can do what they like with it are totally correct, but if they claim that them being obese effects nobody else they are wrong as it can actually cause a rise in costs for the rest of us.
