Thought I'd create a thread for this. Ideal result is simply three points and no injuries before Germany on Tuesday.

    3 points for who?

Funny how a book has completely overshadowed the build-up to the greatest Gibraltar performance ever.

I suppose the biggest talking point about this game is whether or not Keane will be dropped. Reading quite a few possible line ups without his name in them but I'd be surprised if he doesn't get the nod. Could be both Long and Keane starting with whoever plays the best getting the nod for the Germany game on Tuesday.

    Keane has to play today!

Keane has to start. He's still banging in the goals in America, this Gibraltar team are significantly worse than anything the MLS has to offer. The likes of Long really need to start pitching in with more goals, Keane has carried the burden for far too long.

    4-0 Ireland.

Can only see 2 or 3 goals in this.

Although am also fearing a repeat of San Marino.

The biggest talking point will probably be about a book.

Not even live on the national broadcaster. Terrible Joe

    Payback time for Operation Flavius.

I imagine they'd be nearly giving tickets away by 5 pm.

I'd say 5-1 we always seem to have a hairy moment against the likes of Andorra and San Marino and then they never score again for another 10 years

    A somewhat laboured 3 0 win

    Gibraltar to score a goal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,235 ✭✭✭jacool

I'm on this being a big win for the Republic.
Poland won 7-0 and we should be trying to match that at least.
Keane might be saved for Tuesday night, with free-scoring Daryl Murphy, maybe, getting a call up.
Best bet of the night - second half to be the one with most goals @4/5. Can see them being very defensive from the off.
Thank God Trap's not in charge or this would be 1-0!

    2-1 Ireland

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 674 ✭✭✭GotTheTshirt

How are the positions in the group decided if level on points, goal diff first?

If that is the case then goals might be very important in what could be a very tight group between second, third and fourth. A win should be a given here, Poland already put seven past them, Ireland should be aiming for similar.

Goal diff is down the list, head to head is first. So goal diff only an issue if we say draw 1-1 twice with Poland and finish level on points with them.

Happy with that team, though obviously Meyler is far from ideal at right back. Delighted Hendrick is getting a start.

    Keane has to play today!

Yeah just because he wrote that book doesn't mean he should be dropped.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,493 ✭✭✭✭Zeek12

Good to see Hoolahan and Hendrick getting a start.

Not sure what the benefit of starting Keane is.....unless maybe O'Neill plans to use him as an impact sub in Germany, rather than in the starting lineup

He scores goals, pretty obvious tbh

Jaysus Brady isn't happy is he, hope we actually see this game out comfortably, we have a habit of making life difficult for us!

Well so would Long, Walters, Murphy etc. against this lot :)

And keep Robbie fresh for the Germany game.

    O'Neill utterly despises O'Donoghue.

    it's slightly uncomfortable.

Jesus I was hoping we'd get by the pre game talk without the mention of Keane's book, I was too naive to think we would.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,293 ✭✭✭✭Mint Sauce

How many mentions of the book so far on RTE?

Looking at the Lansdowne Rd Stands, hopefully a few more arrive for it.

I really wouldn't be too sure of that ;-)

Get a few up and he'll be taken off

Still half an hour so hopefully a decent crowd, not expecting anywhere near a full house sadly, (hope I'm wrong).

They only started talking about the book there still chatting away about the impact on the players and the book release and more about Keane, nothing we haven't heard before.

Brady isn't one bit happy about the book ha!

I know the FAI are contractually obliged to hold games here but I think it would be fantastic to see this played at a packed LOI ground instead of a 30% capacity in the AVIVA.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 40,061 ✭✭✭✭Harry Palmr

A joke? Brady made a joke?

This is a dismal pre-match vibe.

It would be nice and give people around the country a better chance to go see Ireland play, but sadly I'd say they just want more money and they have pumped a lot into the Aviva.

I love how pundits complain about Keane's book being a distraction. The only reason it is one is because the media and pundits keep bringing it up and talking about it.
