Are they next door to the murderer or sitting beside him, like how close are they?

This thread has the potential to be a legal minefield, trial by media and all that...

Hope to god that this arrest yields some information and sheds light on her whereabouts, for the mother's sake.

The person arrested today was arrested abroad.

Either way, innocent until proven guilty, lets not all jeopardise a trial by commenting too much.

What is your fascination with a trial? The person hasn't been named here or on the article. Your losing the run of yourself

That poor family what they have gone through words can't describe. I hope they will finally find out what happened to their daughter and sister and will be able to bring her and her little baby home for a decent burial.

2008: A small wooden cross bearing the name “Fiona Pender” is found on Slieve Bloom at the border between Laois and Offaly

    Absolutely chilling

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,646 ✭✭✭✭qo2cj1dsne8y4k

Her mom is such a lovely lady and that poor family have been destroyed, with her brother then her and then her dad. I have no idea how that poor woman keeps going but no matter when you meet her, she's always sweet and friendly.

I don't know if they'll ever get the body tbh, I guess everybody has their own theories on what happened, and I don't think anyone will ever know for sure.

Wouldn't be getting my hopes up over this anyway, although I really hope that the guards are correct and she gets to be finally laid to rest.

It's absolutely chilling to think she could be snatched from her own apartment, in the middle of a town though.

People are obsessed with going on about "outrage" - seriously in fashion at the moment. People can't express anger about something justifiable without the "o" word getting thrown at them as a pot-shot by such cool, edgy people.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,527 ✭✭✭Masala

That poor family has been thru so much..... they deserve to be respected on social media. All they want is closure.....and an honourable burial for their child. I pray that they get both someday soon.

He was in Cork, Leeson Street, Bray, Westport, Belfast, The Hague and Bangkok when it happened.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

I can't post the link because I'm reading it from the Facebook app, but it's from the rte.ie website,

Apparently this guy that has been arrested was the main suspect in the case before. Don't know how much were allowed say on that but maybe it will be closure for the family after all

Police always had a suspect, they never had any evidence, looks like that's about to change, good

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 500 ✭✭✭indigo twist

On the other hand, if this woman broke up with the suspect on bad terms, and if she was aware he was a suspect in the case at the time (very likely), there's the possibility she's providing false information in order to frame her ex.

You would hope no one would be so heartless and cruel as to give the dead woman's family false expectations like that. But you just don't know.

Hopefully this isn't the case, and she will be able to help the Gardaí find the body.

If its the same main suspect as I'm thinking of, it wouldn't have been the first time thinly veiled threats were made. If it is the same guy, he sent threatening letters to some company, informing them he was a very dangerous man and to ask tullamore gardai about his history.

    Isnt Larry murphy abroad atm?

    Suspect arrested abroad?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,646 ✭✭✭✭qo2cj1dsne8y4k

I don't think larry murphy was ever a suspect with fiona pender. The guards and her mother think it was someone who she knew very well.

This is going to sound so wrong , but I genuinely hope they find Fionas remains and that her poor mother can finally have some peace of mind knowing that she has her back. The not knowing for any of the families of missing people must be horrific.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 624 ✭✭✭Laois6556

Hopefully this leads to a conclusion for the family. I was just thinking that it would be far less likely these days for women to go missing without a trace like those poor women in the 90's. I think mobile phones/technology are the main reasons for this. For example there was a woman killed in the midlands recently enough and technology helped find her and her killer in a short enough period. Obviously it's still horrible for the victims families but better than what the families of Fiona Pender and the other missing women.

Looks like the net is finally closing. Hopefully there will be a breakthrough and the family will finally get some closure.

Looking at the case I can't see why it was ever linked to Larry Murphy, sure there was plenty of hysteria around the time of his release but it's obvious that Fiona was harmed by someone who was close to her. The Gardai have always had their suspect, now at last they might be able to build a strong case against them.

Every unsolved missing person/murder case involving a female victim in the 90s somehow gets linked back to poor oul Larry.

the murderer was incredibly close to fiona, everyone in he area knows that..time to allow the guards to search the whole farm!

why has it taken this long though?

Not enough substantial evidence I'd assume. That's usually the case.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,381 ✭✭✭Yurt2

From the sounds of it he confessed to it via a threat to his current partner?

I wonder if that would be enough to secure a conviction. Especially without a body and post mortem evidence etc.
