As someone who knows nothing about motoring, when I saw this thread in the "most recent threads" part of the homepage, and saw its title, I got a very different idea of what rim meant. May somebody please explain what a motor rim is?

    6.5x14 with summer tyres.

    5.5x14 with winter tyres.

Ms jou's car has (don't remember width) 15s - both summer and winter sets.

It's what you get from some of the more considerate main dealers before signing the finance contract.

    it would certainly appear so

never had a problem stopping, never felt like car was sliding and 3 of the tyres must be at least 10 years +

when I got the car it was 9 years old and the tyres were not new by any stretch

if I was driving outside of Dublin I would more than likely change them tbf

Personally i wouldn't drive to the tyre shop on them lol if you are comfortable with them though that's fine, we all have different bench marks for personal safety :D

Why not post up a pic of the condition of the treads and sidewalls.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,907 ✭✭✭power pants

    will when I get home

Ironically they appear to be in great condition. well above 1.6mm and no visible bulging or cracking either

I think what tossy is inferring is that the age of the tyres is of concern rather than their visual appearance. Tyres are only recommended for a certain period of time by each manufacturer, and whilst they may look fine, there is a high probability that they can come apart unexpectedly. If you check the side walls, there will be a date code as the last four digits of the serial number i.e. 0902 would be the ninth week of 2002.

Anything over 10 years shouldn't be on the road AFAIR, anything that has been held in stock for six years cannot be sold.

I am on 18x9JJ on the rear(need to check the front again) with 255/35/18 at the rear and 235/35/18 on the front.

A new law is in a few days ago which attracts a fixed penalty of 3 points and a fine for no NCT.

Changing from mandatory summons to fixed charge notice. So you could get a ticket when your car is parked on a public road for not displaying a current NCT.

If you don't pay the FCPN within the prescribed time then it will go to court.

Also - 16 inch wheels here. Anything above just kills comfort..!

I have 15 inch while there on the small side there is two benefits. Basically impossible to damage the alloy itself of a path or something like that as the tyres are 195/65/15. Really cheap tyres even good brand ones. I can get bridgestones for less than half the price people are paying for any 17-18 inch tyres.

Stop trying to justify your 15's, your fooling nobody :)

On the ride, 19's were a killer but the 18's are dead comfy on the e60. Also went up to a 40 profile!

I'll admit they look nothing when compared to 17s 18s plus and that there is a lot of rubber visible I.e. 65 makes for a rather wide side wall.

15in 205 60s on an e36 323i. I have a set of 16in 225s but the heavier wheels are noticeable on acceleration, they are slightly worse on fuel and pricier on tyres. The 15s make the car feel lighter and more agile. Love them.

Last week was 17's, this week is 16's..... Both uncomfy as f*ck on bumpy roads but meh, I like it bumpy bumpy :D

I'm also big enough that I have a rim to fit into comfortably, all the way in, with not much effort, I'm that gooooood.... Why isn't there and option for 38's for me tractor
