    Good underlying base. Put a lot of work in up to an OW race in May. Bad ankle sprain had me out for 3 months. The 7:12 was my first swim in months. a couple of sessions up to the 6:14 (SC) but 2 weeks out of the water again. Plenty of rowing machine sessions so upper body endurance there. The only swims were technique. After the 5:55 the Coach commented that I was mainly using upper body strength instead of leg kick propulsion. The ankle was still a bit weak so with some solid training and kick back the January goal is sub 6 in the 50m.

    Motivation to start going to the pool more that once a month, was 1.55 for 100m so there is a big drop off in pace as i get tired.

    Very happy with that. Not too far out from 7 minutes which was my goal last winter when I was at my peak. Definite sign I'm on the way back to fitness.

    Sorry if this is the wrong place for this...

    Assuming I carry on doing monthly 400m TT's - how do I know what kind of target to set that is realistic, will challenge me and is achievable?

    I know I could say for next time 6:20 and if I beat that then 6:15 etc but is there any way of working out a realistic longer term target?

    Essentially no difference from two months ago, so can't be too disappointed given how little swimming I'm doing (maybe 4k a week). If every kg slows you down by 4secs per km when running, how much does every extra kg slow you down in the pool???? Wounder if I shave off my beard would I gain a few seconds :D

    My usual pace is 2:20-2:10 per 100m so that equates to 9:20 ish.
    First time I timed myself and pushed it a bit. Splits were all over the place. Next stop sub 8:00 minutes.

    Sorry to be off topic but do you guys post faster times in smaller pools as a matter of interest? I only swim open water or 50m (Its Australia so there are about 6 50m pools within a 10km radius from me :)) so never have to swim in a 25m pool. I can't tumble turn yet but I imagine once I can it will save a few seconds off the time.

    Generally, yes. People will begin to tire in a 50m pool. The wall gives you a short rest and then the push off and glide gives more rest so you'll be able to swim faster.

    first ask yourself how important is a 400m tt ( not very to be fair ) and what do you want to get out from this.
    you should have a very good idea what time you will swim from training times . as a realistic long term target you swimming 3 times a week with your talent should see you 5.45 roughly in 6 month. ps iam glad you took of a nice bit in december as it is a shame that somebody like you is not sub 6 min

    This is pretty motivating. I would be delighted with a 40 second drop in 6 months from a 3 swim-week.

    Was hoping to go sub 7, felt slow but was happily surprised when I looked up a the clock at the end and it was just hitting 7 as I touched. Definitely lost a few seconds in my turns, especially seen as I missed the wall with my feet on the last turn. Confident I'll break 7 in February.

    it was more thought to be a kick in the backside ( he is a lovely swimmer ) and the biggest challenge is getting him swimming 3 times a week ;-)

    What's also funny is I saw an almost 60 second drop between the time we were in the NAC last summer and this month, based on a 4-swim week - mind you I attribute half of that drop to simply wanting it more. The next 60 might take a couple of years though.

    I think Courdelion is too busy helping other people achieve their goals to focus on his own :)

    yes i d agree.( at the same time i think cafe java would disagree ;-)

    I attribute half of that drop to simply wanting it more
    one of the biggest secrets of training ;-)

    Thanks Peter - only just saw this reply.

    Overall it's not that important. Same as FTP really. Just a number to measure yourself against it's how it translates into the racing that's the important thing.

    It is a kick up the arse. Swim frequency has improved last few months but I know I should be swimming even more and that with some consistency I'll get a better feel for the water and improve speed and endurance.
    The 6:25 is back now to 6:40 after Christmas and even a fast 100 is still only 1:34 at the moment (after a 44 50m). But you are right - I should be under 6 and 5:45 is a good target to aim for!

    This was done with the benefit of a draft- I debated not putting it in the chart but its only a bit of fun anyway so in it goes. Took off 5 secs after the lad ahead, caught him at the wall. Generally I had to slow at the turn for congestion, would catch him by halfway, before slowing at the turn again. All touch-turns, all pretty efficient. Swam high with a good reach, and kept my toes pointed. The main thing, is I stayed relaxed throughout the swim. Hand timed by the coach, so I've no idea of splits, but everything felt good and steady.

    I expect I'll plateau from here, or at least any gains I do make will be marginal. I know I'm not as fast as many others who can swim faster off less volume, and I've a long way to go before I could even consider myself reasonably fast for a triathlete, but I'm satisfied with the progress I've made over the last few months.

    Went backwards after Christmas indulgence and then was surprisingly faster on Monday after two weeks of no swimming. Stroke seems to be improving but fitness/endurance is still not there yet.
