Your second favourite team...

...might be a strange one but, after your own team, is there any other team you like, or maybe dislike less than the others?

Have to say I have limited interest in most, course I particularly dislike the Packers division rivals, obviously the Bears most of all, and outside that I kinda enjoy seeing the Cowboys and the Pats fail...but suspect many others do too. And the rest are just...meh.

Except for the Raiders. I guess it's the whole silver and black thing in the 80s, the bad boy image, the rap music, the long suffering support and so on.

I like the Saints, Lions and Packers. Always like to see those two winning. Its about players though more than anything, really like Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers and I have manlove for Megatron.

It actually varies from year-to-year for me, due to factors such as teams acquisitions of players I like that I have followed throughout college or liked on tape coming up to draft time, coaching staff changes and free agency, the amount I enjoy watching them play, among other things. For example, it was the Giants 3 years ago, the Falcons a couple of years ago, the Chiefs last year, and I've been liking the Vikings and Cardinals over the last year.

I do quite like the Jaguars and Rams however, but wouldn't really call the second teams. Teams that I have never been able to take to for some reason, apart from the obvious as a Ravens fan, are the Panthers, Texans, Bills and Raiders. I don't even know why. :pac:

I have a soft spot for the Chiefs. I don't remember when it developed or why. I just do.

Chiefs Vs Packers for the SB. :)

I have a soft spot for the Titans at present (due in no small part to the presence of Jake Locker) I would agree with Paully that it can change from time to time depending on personnel. Love Rex Ryan so have no issue with the Jets doing well.

As for those I dislike most, outside of divisional rivals, I obviously am not a fan of the hooded Darth Vader & the Pats and have a particular hatred of the 49ers.

    I like the Cardinals

Bruce Arians long bomb offence is fun to watch and their defense is mean!

Have a Larry Fitz jersey too :)

I have a soft spot for the Steelers. The Steeler Nation was born on the same day and the same year as my father. So that's why...

I love Cam Newton so I have a soft spot for the panthers. They also gave is Steve Smith :D

Green Bay Packers due to my strong connections in Wisconsin. Spent a lot of time in Sconnie over the last 14 years and have been to a fair few Packers games.

Been a Packers fan for a long while, so the past 3-4 years I've looked at the Bengals as being my AFC 2nd team..... Mostly because I like the kit & the whole 'tiger' theme they have.

They would be a good choice for an undecided to follow.
    They've a pretty good setup with a ferocious D
They are a good QB away from championship quality.

Pretty much this. I'm not long into football properly so I get lost sometimes but it's good to have a different conference 2nd team... Packers are my No. 1, but I'd like either Bengals or possibly Steelers as my 2nd team. Basically anyone but the Patriots. :P

Dallas Cowboys my second team after the Ravens (who I've been less enthusiastic about since they won the super bowl) and after that I like the Panthers. Always like to see the Packers and Chargers do well too. Big fan of Romo, Rodgers, Rivers and Riverboat Ron.

I'm a Giants fan but I have lots of friends who follow Green Bay and do respect them as an organisation. Plus I enjoy watching the 49ers so I'd count both of thise as second teams I guess.

Been an admirer of the 49ers under Jim Harbaugh. Just like the way they're coached...tough, physical, high-intensity, smart. Particularly on the defensive side of the ball. So I’m disappointed that there's talk now that he's on the way out of there. Will be a loss to the NFL too if he goes back to college football.

Really deserved I think to win a Super Bowl in the last few years...lost by one score to the last 3 Super Bowl winners in either the conference championship or the Super Bowl itself.

In the AFC, I'm a fan of Peyton Manning so root for his team.

Anybody who picks up a player I've had a soft spot for in college.

That and the Raiders due to a memorable Madden campaign many years ago when Brett Favre was on the cover.

Always one with this comment. Most if not all in here are fans first of the team they support now. Sure the thread says second favourite but no harm having a fleeting interest in another team or a soft spot on another team for various reasons or just like another team.

I have been a Pats fan since the early 90's but have an interest and soft spot for Packers as I spent so much time there. I keep an eye on them every now and again and watch some of their games but the Pats will always come first. And of course go to their games when in Wisconsin. My love for the game itself makes it easy to be open to other teams.

If you support a team then you support the team - and hate all others (especially the Raiders and the Pats)

Oh yeah? Is that written in a rule book somewhere of supporting team? I know plenty of people who grew up in the city of their home teams no matter what sport it is who are die hard fans of their home team but also share some interest in other teams.

I generally find those who don't actually grow up near their home team or live in a different country are more anal about the level of support you are supposed to have for your favourite team.

Must check that rule book out of the library though and while I am at it call the Pats hotline and tell them I hve cheated on them with another because I like football a lot and have been to many other teams games that didn't involve them. Makes me laugh every time when people are that anal about it and are hell bent on telling others they don't really support their team etc etc.

My second favourite team tends to fluctuate a bit, but tends to be a team with an explosive defence. Was the Bucs in the early 2000s, Ravens for much of the last decade, now... maybe the Cardinals, Brown's or Bengals. Don't really ha e a standout one at present, quite like all the NFC west defences.

    Here's the weird thing.

I hate the Bears. I hate them. But because I like that whole NFC North black and blue thing, and like to think the Packers play in the most...historically hard division...part of me has a grudging respect when they progress.

But still, the Raiders are the only team I like to see win, after the Packers.

My family actually lived in Chicago in 1985, but I was too young to remember anything much, so I've always had a soft spot for the Bears.

After the Pats, they'd be the only other team I'd generally root for.

Funny that Manning is with the Broncos now. When that happened, for me, it was like my missus saying a threesome with her hot best mate was a runner!

I've always had a soft spot for the Browns, really enjoyed their win last night. But if/when they are meeting the Bolts there can only be 1 team for me.

Actually you know when it comes down to it, if the Patriots were out of the playoffs this is the team I would want to win it all. I would be shouting for them in every game if they made the postseason.

Browns are without doubt my second team. I felt so much for their fans when the lost their team in the mid-90's.

Its also why I particularly dislike the Ravens.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 387 ✭✭setanta74

Always like to see the Bills, Packers and 49ers do well. Bills and niners because they remind me of late 80's and early 90's when I got into the game. The Packers simply because of history and Lambeau in the snow at night IS football.

Yeah I'm the opposite of this right here. As a Bears fan, watching us once again throw petrol into the dumpster, light a match, close the lid and walk away, it's hard to avoid both hating and admiring the Packers for how they run their organisation (helped no doubt by having the best QB in the business). That and historically the rivalry is built as much around mutual dependence as it is around enmity. Not that it's much of a rivalry these days anyway.

Otherwise, I dunno. I have a liking for the Texans for no reason more profound than that I think they have a cool logo. I also like the Browns, but like a lot of people on here, that's more of a sympathy thing. I really don't like the Seahawks and Pete Carroll gets on my wick.

Been to one Giants game and one Jets game, Colts are my fav team but if I had to pick a 2nd team I'd prefer to go NFC so would say Giants, NYC is the only part of the US I've been to.

Raider fan so always been a fan of teams with a strong ground game and deep threat - I should like the Ravens but really can't stand them! The Lions of the 90s with Barry Sanders were always a team I would look for their score and Megatron and Stafford hooking up are great to watch. The Cardinals have really impressed this year.

With the exception of the Jets, I also always tend to have a soft spot for whoever just did Hard Knocks....

I should also say that, while my favourite are the Packers and keep an eye on the Raiders, I don't mind the Dolphins.

They had that cool thing going on in the 80s, like the Raiders, but for different reasons. The Raiders were all rap and the black and silver NWA thing and the bad boys of the NFL, whereas Miami was exciting, Miami Vice and that striking colour combo and Dan Marino. Plus unlike the Bears, Giants, Redskins or 49ers, they weren't good enough to lose that sympathy by becoming successful.
