I personally thought that the best results came from bands that mixed it up e.g. Tears For Fears had a lot of guitar in their songs, and OMD used real bass as well as older keyboards:

We can emulate all kinds of synths in software today, we kind-of take it all for granted. I remember the first time I heard the Miami Vice theme and was blown away: the big white keyboard used by Jan Hammer here (with the green screen attached) is a Fairlight CMI Series IIx, which cost as much as a house. Now it's a £29.99 app for the iPad. :eek:

Ah now. It didn't ALL get crap. If you like 80's synthpop there's been some great modern(ish) artists releasing stuff with similar sounds or influences.

Off the top of my head: M83, CHVRCHES, Chromatics, Goldfrapp, Crystal Castles (bit more abrasive), The Knife (in their less weird moments), Ladyhawke, Wye Oak, Future Islands.....there's loads out there!
