Possibly addicted to Iron supplements

It started last week. I was visiting the sister and was feeling a bit tired and under the weather. She mentioned these Iron supplements you can take, said they did wonders for her and gave me 1 with some orange. I dropped it back and anyway headed off home. It tastes kind of funny but you get used to it.

On the walk home I started feeling a kind of buzz. If you've ever had an adrenaline rush or tried amphetamines you'll understand me. Nowhere near as strong but still noticeable. I felt really good, no longer tired, happy actually.

The next day I went and bought a box of 28 sachets for a tenner. They went pretty quick. I'm on my second box now but it's already half way gone through. I am going through these things like fire. Does Iron have some kind of addictive property? I might go have one now with some orange juice.

Is this happening to anyone else?

    Are you, by chance, anemic?

Just don't walk under any giant magnets, safe enough otherwise

You might want to see a doctor about that. Too much iron can be pretty dangerous

****ing 'ell. It's like you try take something to make yourself healthy and it turns out its not good to take 8 sachets of it in one day. I hate that **** with health professionals. Wine is good for you, no wine is bad. This is good for you. NO! It's actually bad.

I have googled Anemic. I don't feel any confusion or weakness nor does my skin look pale.

I don't know much about it, but if taking a load of iron supplements really makes you feel better then there's more than likely a good reason for that. Otherwise it's just in your head and you're slowly overdosing yourself.

In any case your shites must be as black as fcuk from downing 8 sachets a day ಠ_ಠ

Water is good for you too, but if you drink 50 litres of it you might just die

Iron not sure if its bad for you, it is expensive though, you will have to start steeling them soon.

No medical advise will be given here, but you could have an iron deficiency, you should go to your doctor !

OP I'm sorry to burst your bubble but Iron supplements take a week to have any impact at all your system. In addition, taking more than 45mg per day leads, without fail, to liver failure and internal bleeding. Seriously, stop taking more than the recommended daily dosage. The euphoric effects are all in your head.

It's only a short hop from iron to heroin..if you start craving He, you're on the slippery slope.

Wow. Iron supplements do to me what that Diaphane stuff does (that thing you take for inflammation - don't know how to spell it). First ten minutes, it's all good. The next 12 hours are crippling hell.

You must have the constitution of an ox.

Good luck trying to poo after all that iron!

Had that Diaphane stuff before. It's absolute ****ing poison. I had Tonsilitis but the Diaphane made me sicker than the tonsilitis ever could have. Scummy stuff tbh.

Yeah be careful. I had to get bled weekly for having too much iron in my blood. The doctors said it could lead to organ failure.

This is hilarious. OP, it's all in your head. You get no "buzz" off iron supplements. But be careful with how many you take, can have bad consequences apparently.

Tell us what the ingredients are - iron does not do that. Any caffeine in there? I'm intrigued.

When my Da found out I had it he was mad to get them. I gladly gave them to him, said watch out because they're pure evil but he was fine on them. Bit mad like that, it'll either murder you or it'll be grand on you.

Aren't you a Liverpool supporter? That would explain you being so tired and under the weather.

Also, 28 sachets for a tenner.. Can I have your dealer's number?

Iron seems to be the same, for me it wrecks my stomach and I get nauseous, for the OP it gives a great buzz apparently

Too much of anything is bad for you, that applies to any supplements. Obvious?

Well consuming too much iron can lead to Hemochromatosis but only over the long term...But i think you can overdose on iron in the short term tho

Acute over dosing on iron supplements can lead to range of nasty side effects including liver damage. Iron is very corrosive to the GI tract so at lower toxicity it will leave you with nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, hematemesis, and diarrhoea.

Severe overdose causes impaired oxidative phosphorylation and mitochondrial dysfunction, which can result in cellular death. The liver is one of the organs most affected by iron toxicity, but other organs such as the heart, kidneys, lungs, and the hematologic systems also may be impaired.

Anything over 20mg/kg and you will show signs of overdose, and anything over 60mg/kg can be lethal.

Chronic over consumption can mimic the effects of haemochromatosis (which is genetic) and may deposit iron into organs such as the liver and heart, which may cause death due to myocardial siderosis.

    Deadly buzz altogether.

You might feel like youve had a bit of a lift from an iron supplement and a lift/improvement in your sense of wellbeing could be classed as pleasurable, and of course anything pleasurable might be a bit addictive so you naturally want to recreate the same feeling and you take more of the iron.
Maybe you could try other supplements that are suitable to combine with the iron, or alternate it with other supplements (I am talking about the likes of vitamins).
It did not take a week for me to notice an improvement in my energy levels when I took Iron supplements, by the way. There's mixed information about it online, some say it takes much longer than two weeks for iron to take noticable effect. I have never heard of anyone waiting a week or more to notice an improvement. Usually I think if you are a bit deficient you notice the dfference sooner.
It's true that iron overload can be dangerous, but you just need to take iron in moderation..most people with iron overload actually have a fairly rare condition that causes it anyway, it's not always a result of over supplementation. The fact that you got a boost from taking it akes me wonder if it ight be worth your while talkng to a doctor or herbalist or both, to see why it happened and whether you should be using particular supplements or eating certain foods to help you to feel as good all of the time?
