Pre-existing conditions

    Hi all,

    I just have a quick question about pre-existing conditions on travel insurance. Does the pre-existing medical conditions only apply to those travelling? If I had to cancel or come home because of a pre-existing condition in a close family member who is not travelling? For example, My mum is Ill at the moment – she could be fine for months to come or she could go downhill suddenly but I’ve a trip booked for Christmas. Now there’s every chance I won’t need the insurance – or at least I hope not – but if I do have to cancel or change plans because of my mum’s illness would it be covered??

    Thanks

    Reading the policy will be the only way to know for sure. For example, Laya Holiday travel insurance includes cover for "the death, serious injury, sudden illness, complications in pregnancy (as diagnosed by a doctor or specialist in obstetrics) of You or Your Immediate Family", but in the exemptions for Holiday travel:
    ACE will not pay:
    ...
    ii. Cancellation, Curtailment or Rearrangement Costs where such cancellation, curtailment or rearrangement results from a medical condition affecting You or Your Immediate Family if:
    a. the condition was diagnosed before you bought this Policy; and
    b. at the time you bought this Policy, the diagnosed condition could reasonably have been expected to result in
    i) death, serious injury or sudden illness;
    ii) or a sudden deterioration in health.
    So you wouldn't be covered under Laya's policy
