I have some 2"x2" weld mesh left over from a job and was woundering if anyone ever used it to make a trap or is it too big, I was thinking of covering it with chicken wire when it's made or would I need it. What ye think?

The hunting life has good plans and dimensions for a Larsen trap, I made 6 of them, all the lads in the club thought they were the bees knees!

It'd make a nice fox trap!

Here's one I made out of 2" x1" lat. Covered in 1" weld mesh stapeled on to it. Each compartment is 18" x18" x18".

Make sure you use chicken wire in the trap and bottom of the trap, as the lads say 2x is to big

I made one with the 2x2 and he kept trying to get out through the 2x2 and finally got to week to call i put in the chicken wire and that stopped him thinking he could get out, just my experience.

fine job lad,id wrap the lot in chicken wire now stop aul cats or foxs clawing the call bird , not sure what springs you used but i used old springs from a aul bed something onto a small trampoline spring works great .

Working anyway, caught call bird thismorning and got other mag then in the afternoon, didn't tink I'd get them at this time of year but going to keep it set now as long as the callbird stays alive with frosty weather. What ye think

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 252 ✭✭shotie

i catch alot this time of year as there be little food around so they be drawn to the food in the trap caught 8 magpie last week in the trap but do watch as the call bird needs good protection from the weather .

What just keep the trap in a sheltered area? I put a back and top on the callbird section so that should shield wind

ya that will work fine .my trap is in beside a ditch with a big old tree over hanging, i put a square of timber (ply wood) on the top once a call bird is caught and he is sheltered from rain and wind from that and the ditch.once he has that and food and water he should last weeks.

Sheet of clear perspex on top and it'll keep catching!

I have enough mesh to make another trap and was thinking of making a square one 30"x30" with 2 trapping compartments and side entry doors for grey crows, are side entry better for greys? Could also put top entry on it too and have it as a combi trap. Is there any difference between the shapes of them?

mine is a square trap if i could only get the camara up and running id put up a pic think side entry works better for catching grey crows but could be wrong im yet to catch a grey crow in a trap seem to be all magpie here.

Making this one too and putting side entry doors for grey crows and I might also put top doors in it aswell so it would be a combi trap. Bit of welding required on this one, is 30"x30"x18"

    Anyone need call birds?

I don't mind trapping them but don't want to kill them in my back garden.
