    Arsenal-vs-Southampton-23-september-2014-prediction.jpg

    MATCH FACTS

    Head-to-head

-Arsenal are unbeaten in their last 10 matches against Southampton in all competitions (W6, D4) since losing 3-2 at St Mary's in the Premier League in November 2002.

-This is the fifth time the sides have been paired together in the League Cup. Arsenal advanced on all four previous occasions.

    Arsenal

-The Gunners' last domestic defeat at the Emirates was their 2-0 loss to Chelsea in the fourth round of last season's League Cup.

-Arsenal have won nine of their last 11 home League Cup ties, scoring 29 times, with their only defeats coming against Manchester City in 2011-12 and Chelsea in 2013-14.

-They have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last nine matches in this competition, a sequence that began with defeat to Birmingham in the 2010-11 final.

-The last time Arsenal failed to advance to the fourth round of this competition was in 2002-03, when they were eliminated by Sunderland.

    Southampton

-Saints have reached the fourth round of this competition in each of the last three seasons.

-They have scored exactly two goals in each of their last three third round matches.

-They were League Cup runners-up in 1979.

Hard to predict when you don't know what sort of squads will be played but i'll go with 2-1 for the gunners, fingers crossed it will be 3 or 4 nil though.

Hopefully this match throws up some manic entertainment, comedy defending and lots of goals.

What type of team will Southampton put out for this one? Will they rest key players or will they go start a strong side?

From Southampton i hope you mean? I reckon Southampton will field a strong side and it will be tough for us to get into a rhythm, if they score early we're in trouble but if we can settle i reckon we'll take em.

Will be entertaining either way just to see some of our less used players get a game against decent opposition.

I don't mind a bit of comedy defending all round as long as Arsenal win. 4-2 with goals from Campbell, Akpom and Podolski. You heard it here first!

The last thing I want is for any of our young defenders to make mistakes and knock their confidence

Koeman said yesterday he would put out the strongest team possible

They don't have any European interest so you'd fully expect them to field a full first team in fairness. That's why I mentioned on the main Arsenal thread I reckon Mert will start. 4 Under 21s in the back four would be asking to go out.

TBH i rather an u-21 than Mertesacker at the moment.

For Southampton id expect Mane to make his debut even if it is off the bench. Ward-Prowse and Yoshida will be rested so Gardos will probably play. Wanyama might get a start.

Me too. Just cant be risking a senior defender. I dont even want Chambers to play. Im not too fussed about the league cup

    Would like to see:

    Ospina
    Bellerin-Mertesacker-Hayden-Coquelin
    Diaby-Rosicky-Wilshere
    Campbell-Akpom-Podolski

    Sanogo injured I understand.

Bench: Martinez, Ajayi, Sanchez, Cazorla, the Ox, Welbeck, Flamini

This competition is of interest to me only because it allows us see the depth of the squad and gives them needed experience at a higher level than they're used to.
I am hoping to see a complete new 11 out tonight with no first team players being used at all.
Who knows we might see a new replacement RB or LB unearthed, even a CB.

That's the benefit of this competition for me.

That said only chambers started the weekend,

A sign that apart from defence we really do have some depth in midfield and attacking players

Why are we playing Sanchez? He's too good for this competition.

    He can play too.

Alexis should be taking his wife to dinner tonight, not playing in this cup.

Arsene is infuriating at times, he knows that fans want to see Akpom.

Have you ever made a post where you don't have a pop at the gaffer? Like, ever??

The fans want to see Campbell. And I'm sure the fans who paid good money in tonight are delighted to be seeing Alexis.

Was a great challenge but he is giving up loads of space out there. Dont think he is very tactically aware. Will come with time.
