What gun do you have for vermin control on the farm. Have a shotgun but want something with a bit more range for rabbits and foxes. Thinking about a .22 with silencer or a .17 with same. What have you got and are you happy with it?

.17 vs .22 is done in fairly good detail over on the shooting forum of boards, www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=466
you'll probably get a better answer to it over there. Have a .22lr myself and find it perfect for rabbits,

I've a shotgun and a 17hmr . If you need something for foxes maybe go a bit bigger to give yourself a bit more stopping power . In saying that I'm very happy with the 17 and have taken the odd fox but the mates 2250 drops them alot better

.223 for the red lads, .22 for the rabbits. Both are cheap to buy ammo for and do the job well. 22 will learn ya how to shoot proper, will stand to ya then with the .223. Silencers all 'round, don't mess with your hearing, it doesn't grow back.

How much would it cost to get a .22, a silencer and light. Total rookie here.

Long time now since I had money to buy any toys :pac: I wouldn't have a clue what's what price wise at the moment.

CZ make accurate rifles at good prices, people call them "agricultural" but they are accurate, which is better than any bell or whistle. You'll need a scope too and possibly a bipod. Look into LED torches, good technology now instead of big batteries and lights. SAK is a good silencer.

Oh, don't listen to anyone telling you to get a heavy barrel on a rimfire (.22 / 17hmr), all it is is more weight for you to carry. On centrefire it's a slightly different story.

+1 on the cz, sak and led torch!
The sak is literally wishper quiet on the 22, firing pin click and the thump of the round hitting the rabbit is about all you'll hear with subsonics.

Is it quiet enough that it won't spook other rabbits? Have an notion for a .17hmr for rabbits, going to be louder than the .22 is the down side

Re torches, we used to use a led lenser one, think it was a m14, great job.

For the rifle, scope, moderator, the course and applying for the license would cost ya roughly €1000

Yes and no.. Find a lot of the time they clear out... Strangely enough i was out with a friend with a 22mag and the rabbits seemed to be as likely to hang around with the crack from his as they did with mine, we reckoned the crack kind of half froze them if you get me

I suppose it could be that the rabbit suddenly dropping spooks the second rabbit as much as the crack really...

Lenser l7 here(the cheaper one :D) and it is ok for out the 50-70yards which is grand for the 22 really

Brno mod 2 in .22 so just the older version of the cz! Friends is a 452 and you'd do well to pick between them without properly looking!

Their a great little rifle in fairness! Certainly one hole jobs once your capable :D

Wind is a bitch on the 17 compared to the 22 but the 22 has to deal with the fall of shot

Yeah the 17 is spose to be flat enough to 150yards or their abouts isn't it? If sighted at 50 on the 22 it's something like 7-8inch drop by 100 :( mil dot scope is handy tho as its down a dot at 100!

17 good for 200 yards but crosswind interferes with the round

In fairness cross wind always interferers unless you are shooting point blank.
Zr105 - what is the difference between a Brno model 2, 1, or 3 or more.
I have a Brno - couldn't tell you what model it is but I bought it second hand in 1989.
My brother has an Unique bolt action (French made .22lr) with a heavy bored rifle thingie. It is the bees knees on accuracy compared to the Brno.
One of my greatest achievements to date was a head shot on a rabbit at 122 yds, lying prone. Calm day, Lely standard h/v h/p.

I'd say you could be wrong there Reg. 22 is bigger but there's more velocity in the .17 so a bigger cartridge. .22s are 50 rounds for around 8 quid. .17 would be 50 for 16 quid.

The 22 rounds in my local gun shop are dearer than the 17. Don't forget there are different heads for the 17 rounds aswell.

Agree. A neighbour has a .17 which is a lovely gun and packs a punch but I would not like to be buying rounds for it.
Prefer my .22 - backed up with accuracy and most importantly stalking/hunting ability.

The crosswind infers more with the 17 than the 22 as the 22 is heavier. It can be judged as per the wind as for a 17 you might have to fire first

Erm to be honest I couldn't really tell you the difference, I just no mines a 2, it's a big stamp on the top of the barrel just at the front edge of the stock. Brno would be the older rifles, they changed at some point in time to "cz" instead but it's the same crowd. They originate from the same village as zetor tractors(brno is the village!) there's not a hole pile of difference between the general shape between the brno and cz 452's anyways, but their is a heap of variants of the 452, think their called something like "style" "varmint" "American" ect and it's just different woods and finish styles on the stocks!

If you look just above the stock on the left side just behind the ejection port you'll find an age stamp it's there on all of the brno/cz! Think it could be stamped somewhere else aswell but would have to look to see!

I dragged it out of "the safe place" to have a look at it earlier and it is now back in hiding.
Will check during the week when I get a chance.

Mines either a 68or 69, id say it's seen some rounds in its time! Can still put subs through one hole at 50yards! And would prob do it at 100 if I tried im sure!

Would not be surprised in the least. Thanks to Boards Shooting forum I discovered that my trusty s/s d/b was made between 1912 -1922 or there abouts :) And it still fires through to this day.

Thatd be nice alright! I haven't bothered to stretch out the zero to beyond the 50 ish to be honest, mainly due to terrain... Most of the time your up on that before you get a shot here! Probably should bring it out to 75 tho as itd be a little bit either way then rather than a big drop to 100...

I think for versatility it's hard to beat a shotgun for farm use. When I say farm use I'd be thinking a jack of all trades weapon capable of a bit of everything.
I'd say a lot of lads started like myself with a Baikal. No frills but solid and dependable!
