InfoSec Jobs thread

Now that we have our "stuff that doesnt need its own thread" thread, I have noticed the forum seems a lot tidier and less chaotic. How would everyone feel about a dedicated jobs thread? I know my employer is desperate for people with the right skills and at least one other person who frequents this thread is looking for people(I know because I got a phone call from a recruiter asking would I be interested in moving to them).

In the applicants we have been interviewing we are seeing a real lack in quality of candidates. One would hope that anyone who frequents this board has some of the right skills and mind set. A recent candidate when asked where he got his security news from said "Motorola". If they had said "The boards InfoSec forum", they would have passed that particular question.

I won't post any jobs now until other boardsies weigh in and agree to the conecpt.

I would suggest some ground rules though. Often these jobs come with referral bonuses. If there is one, maybe we should develop an etiquette? I'm open to thoughts.

    Awesome idea!

For someone not in the sec area of IT, I would find it very useful to get an idea of other people's route to sec in terms of prior roles/qualifications/certs as well as what your current role entails. A seperate thread may suffice.

There should probably be disclosure that a referral bonus exists.

Great idea - seems like everyone in InfoSec in Ireland is constantly trying to recruit and struggling to do so often!

I hope other infosec profesionals who frequent this board won't mind if I say infosec is not rocket science and the requirements for moving into security roles are not as advanced as one may think. InfoSec people are often described as being IT ninjas and for many that is the case, but for us and this has been the case anywhere else I worked when we were looking for sec people, all we really wanted was someone with a good grounding in IT principles and a genuine interest or passion for security. Any competent Sys Admin should easily get into security as all/most of the skills are transferrable. A sys admin will already be experienced in doing vulnerability assessments, patch management, system hardening, and scripting which comes in handy, and firewalling on a systems level. Likewise a competent network engineer will be familiar with network principles, CLI-access to network devices, configuration changes etc. and hardware-based firewalls as well. I've worked with firewall specialists who didnt consider themselves security people.

My route to where I am now started in tech support, removing viruses, configuring consumer firewalls and troubleshooting. From there I became a Linux Sys Admin, from there IT Security Specialist doing vulnerability assessments, Sys Admin'ing the security infrastructure, patch management Incident Handling and software developement(scripting) etc, then to InfoSec Analyst for Red Hat, again all the same duties, to here where I do Pen Testing, Incident Handling, Sys admin of Security infrastructure and SIM deployment(which is Linux-based). For large parts of my job a Linux Power user with a passion for security would be ideal.

We are looking for everything from low-level SOC analysts to Senior Security consultants, firewall and load balancer specialists. If you have the core skills, we can teach you or train you on the rest. Most other security positions in Ireland on the same. Its amazing the number of people we interview who are fuzzy on the OSI model. Don't get public key cryptography and freak out when asked about the Linux shell. I am not exaggerating here.

Reading back, this post is may be not suited to this thread. For a career in IT, the number one thing you need is an interest in IT, because to be good you will need to spend some of your spare time reading and upskilling. The same is true for a career in IT Security. If you have the interest and the curiosity, you can break into the area very easily.

A question I like to ask candidates is "Tell me about your network at home". If they have a genuine interest they will have a couple of systems knocking around. My current home network is pretty pathetic because half my gear is still in the Czech Republic, but I still have a shell server, a media server and 2 linux-based laptops(3 if you count my work laptop).

So Im going to wait for at least a mod to weigh in and maybe a couple of other regular posters and then if everyone is ok I will post some details of positions we have open.

Good idea, although there might be included the tangential job type that covers data protection/privacy. Given the upcoming EU reform of the Data Protection directive, there will likely be a upswing of roles that involve data protection officers for medium to large enterprises.

Why? And how do we know a company won't feel this is disclosing company sensitive information?

Any chance the problem is how you're advertising? Anyone with a bit of cop on and some prior security experience is probably already working in the industry and on decent money. If you're advertising e.g. a junior position paying under €30k (or worse, not even specifying a salary) then naturally you're going to have to sift through a good few muppets and chancers.

You've hit the nail on the head there. Everyone decent is already taken and happy where they are and on decent money.

Last I checked, the midlands and west of Ireland are in Ireland. Has there been some political upheaval in the last few hours?

There are some Pen Test positions in Waterford I've heard of.

Have heard of some in Galway from time to time, and the pen testing roles Skylops mentioned above in Waterford.

Beyond that most companies large enough to require a full time info sec resource are based in the larger cities, as are the consultancies, so anything else is few and far between! They pop up now and again though so i'm sure if you keep an eye out you'll get lucky eventually!

Ok thank you. Where do you look for job vacancies? Would companies advertise the jobs on linkedin?

    Google.

There are Pen Test opportunities in AFAIR in Sun Alliance in Waterford.

Edit: InfoSec is becoming now like IT was a few years ago. What IS area do you want? Threat Analysis, Threat Modelling, Incident Response etc?

Well, elsewhere there's not much info to sec. The vast majority of big IT companies are based in Dublin.

Limerick and Galway might also be worth a look.

This is the problem. Only big IT companies 'require' InfoSec people. But every company has money. This needs to change.

Trend micro (Cork) have 19 open positions in the info sec sector , Ill gladly hand over CV's if anyone is interested . Same as stated by Syklops we are looking for anyone with good solid 5 years IT admin experience and a hunger for knowledge . Typically the roles they have on offer would be CSE ( Customer service engineer) and that role will pay between 40-50 DOE. They also have some CTS roles ( Customer technology Specialist) typically between 50-60k . These roles would be split into three , IM messaging , Cloud , Custom defense. You would pick one of the three and specialize in that roll. (We also operate a referral program)

Feel free to PM if you don't want public eyes watching.

VMware is a great place to Work in terms of training , they are not good for pay im afraid as they run a back to work scheme , I often found myself training ex makeup artists, plasterers , carpenters you name it . Must have gotten around 20 certificates while working there . They are very big on education .

Are there any entry level jobs in Security? All of the positions I can see are looking for a few years experience. Have degree in computer science and another year left in MSc in Networking and Security. Doesn't seem to be anything in the way of graduate jobs in the sector.
