Restricted recording and replay capability on my Finlux TS7100 Box

Maybe somebody has come across this situation before, if so I'd appreciate their comments.
I have a Finlux Digital Terrestrial/Satellite TV receiver that has the ability to record to a USB stick (FAT 32 format) that works fine within the confines of the unit itself. I plugged in the same USB stick in to my Toshiba Blue Ray Player (BDX 3300KB) to check if it would play the recorded programme, but no joy.

Is there an explanation for why the Toshiba player does not recognise the USB stick so that I can play the recorded material previously recorded on the Finlux machine.

The recordings from all VESTEL made products are encrypted in a format that only the original device will display a rite pain but is understandable.

An unnecessary pain indeed ..... and unacceptable to most.

All such devices should be boycotted to try to stop this practice.

They are encrypted to stop people from recording usually high definition programs and playing them on other devices as they want you to buy the boxsets instead, there are often ways around them but can be expensive.

In my opinion all those cheap sets should be avoided as the built quality is very poor the sound is useless on them

The manufacturers of the receivers want you to buy boxsets?

It has more to do with the Copyrights I guess.

My receiver does the same and it is different brand. I thought that was industry standard. I stand corrected:o

NP .... it appears that all(?) "VESTEL" based products have this limitation, but others do not.

There are others that do this but all VESTEL products do...

There are lots of different recording formats and they aren't all inter-operable.

What you need to do is record some test files. Then try and play them in VLC https://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html and Media Player Classic http://mpc-hc.org/ to see what works.

I haven't tried this but it should give you more info on what each device can save as - http://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo

Vestel make most of the Saorview boxes and yes you can play those files on a PC.

Here's an example from a different manufacturer Ferguson - TS_Tool.zip Short Description:
A program to convert your recordings to TS format

    http://www.ferguson-digital.eu/en/download/HD-Satellite-Receivers/ariva-200/

Also check the TV manual - my TV can play various formats, but it won't do all at higher resolutions / bit rates.

Videolan does not play the file formats used by Vestel I have tried and countless other programs it is locked in a format that nobody else seems to use. There are encrypted in that they wont often play in another of even the same product...there locked to the device you recorded it on.

Thank you all for your contributions on this topic.
I looked in to some of the detail associated with the Finlux TS7100 recordings and have found the following:
    Top Level
    DVR
    Next Level
    RECS (File Folder)
    RECSINFO
    STORAGE
Below shows what is under RECS above:
    Next Level
    (VLC Media File) 2014090723540201.ifo
    (KEYINFO File) 2014090723540201.keyinfo
    (NAV File) 2014090723540201.rec.nav
    (File Folder) 2014090723540201

Below shows what is under (File Folder) 2014090723540201 above:
    Next Level
    (File) Chunk.0 (size) 0 Kb
    (File) Chunk.1 (size) 65,536 Kb
    (File) Chunk.2 (size) 65,536 Kb
    ;;
    (File) Chunk.17 (size) 65,536 Kb
    (File) Chunk.18 (size) 42,764 Kb

Below shows what is under RECSINFO above:
    Next Level
    (ADF File) 2014090723540201B.ADF 16Kb
    (Setup information) 2014090723540201B.INF 16Kb
    (Setup information) RECS.INF 96Kb

    Note: Nothing shows under “STORAGE”.

Looks like "Flash" is in the mix (.flv) and individual 65Meg sections are stored in some sort of order.

With this information, can any of the above be used to play on different devices outside the Finlux ?.
    Would appreciate further comments.

I posted a comment/request about two years ago on the subject of being able to play a recording from the Finlux TS7100 on other electronic devices, but I received no reply. I'm asking the question again of any "experts" out there, can it be done......

the only reference I have seen is someone in a similar situation to you and they got no reply either.

It might be possible, but without examining the a recorded file could not be sure, as a lot of manufacturers like to make their recordings device specific for playback.

This issue discussed at length in the past including here:

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057141892

Even recording the RTE radio stations available on saorview will be locked in this way on these Vestel boxes.

I've been wondering about this. (I have a digihome DI-TS1124 box.)
It creates the same file structure.

(I believe the STORAGE folder is used when live tv is paused, for temporary storage.)

in the RECS folder, there are various files and folders, one folder for each recording, named, eg 2016062423001101, (recorded in 2016, June 24, 23.00, I believe), containing chunk.0, chunk.1, chunk.2, etc files, each 65536KB in size. (Each recording is split into 65536KB segments with an unknown format.)

I have tried renaming these files with various movie format extensions, eg .avi, .mov, .mp4, etc, but they will not play back in the several media players I tried. I get Unknown Format errors, etc. It is possible there is some form of encryption.

(I guess the .rec.nav files in the RECS folder contain info about bookmarks, whether the program has been watched, where it stopped playing, etc.)

The 2016062423001101.inf file in the RECSINFO folder contains info about the channel, program title, program info, etc for that program. (These particular files are all exactly 16384 bytes.) I guess you would have to be very careful, and save a backup copy if you try editing these. I haven't attempted it.

There is also a RECS.INF file, containing the same details, channel, program title, program info, etc, for all recordings in the recordings library. (I guess this is recreated each time you sort the recordings, eg alphabetically, by date, etc.)

I'm looking for a program to manage my recordings, edit the info, convert recordings to other formats, etc.
