Set a thief to catch a thief. Get on to the local gun club. If they're any good they'll do most of your pest control and keep an eye on who's coming and going. The lads around here are brilliant. No strangers hunting and all the vermin control done.

no gun club members allowed near our yard, they can go up the fields. Had a bit of a stand off with them a few years ago as they never in my life time asked could they shoot here, final straw was when a dog came into the yard a few months after daughter had been attacked by a dog:mad::mad: They now ask each year

The local lads have our ground preserved. They release their own pheasants most years and couldn't be more sensible about when and where they shoot. They don't ask though as such though most of them would pass through the yard and let you know they were around out of pheasant season. It's working well for us.

Id have no problem with that. There waa even a pen for rearing pheasants in our wood and thwy coukd use it only fir the way they went about it

Some clown in our local forestry last week with a rifle  firing shots every couple of minutes I thought the hunting season doesn't begin until November.

Deer and duck are in season from the start of this month. Pheasant shooting kicks off in November.

Definitely no deer or duck in our forestry would they be shooting rabbits? Either way there is a notice at the entrance "strictly no hunting".

Must be deer in your area. Wouldn't be using a rifle for ducks.

Ya never know deer can wander. Small forest near mullingar aabout 10 or 15 acres and I spotted deer in it before. They wander in from the bigger woods a few miles away I'm guessing

They can carry TB... the same as other mammalians can - you and me included.
However, if ye can get a few loins butchered from the vermin deer. Put them in the freezer to keep.
I have several yum yum recipes for venison :)

was 9 of them earlier in year, rang local wildlife ranger, he said to fill in form and would see what he could do, that was the last i heard from him. Had a lad came in on 1st september looking to shoot them , he has a licence. Saw the stag the other day.

The fcukers with the lurchers are the worse of the lot of them. The arrive by the van load, go where they please and terrorise the Hares (and anything else that crosses their path) in the whole parish. Zero respect for anyone or anything. It's only a matter of time before some of them come to a sticky end.

loosely related to poaching, the lad that had ten heifers rustled a few weeks ago, and had them returned, made the front page of the local paper. The Anglo Celt. Anyone who knows him kmows the kind of justice he would mete out to some body who crossed him. Rustler picked the wrong cattle this time. !!
Rustler lucky to be still able to walk...........;-)

Those lads were very active in this neck of the woods a couple years ago till one night they returned to their van to find it burning nicely, probably an electrical fault or something..:) End of problem...

Shocking how badly carrying around lurchers affects van wiring. I see this becoming a problem of epidemic proportions.

Dont paint all with the same brush,, I have being lamping with a lurcher since first year,, I always ask the landowners before I go in, walk straight to the door with lamp and dog and who ever is with me (never more than 3 of us) and tell exactly what we are doing and make sure there is no stock in the fields I want to go,, Just waiting for the evenings to close in another bit and ill be starting again and cant wait,,, I usually bring the lads whos land I use regularly a nice lump of fresh of rabbit meat when I catch em,,, no point in killing them and just throwing them away, and brother and few of his friends use the fur for tying fishing flys!

People that play with fire can get their fingers burned.....

Who has the most to lose?

Call the cops. They may not be too busy squaring off traffic fines.

+1. Fell into that scene as well as a lad. The memories.

    Loved it.
Lost my best ever lurcher to a gate.
I'll take rabbit over chicken any day.

Funny incident with this a few years ago. Local wildlife officer heard there was trouble with these guys and said he had powers of arrest. He saw their van in the locality and rang the guards for backup. Two young guards came out eager to help him with the arrest until they saw the six massive savages coming across the field with lurchers and dead hares. They **** themselves, jumped into the squad, took off their ties and said their shift was over and drove away like the clappers leaving the wildlife officer standing there. The big savages asked him what he was looking at and he said "nothing". He seemed to forget all about his powers of arrest
