EDIT: Correct form for one arm dumbell row

Hi. I've taken up weight training recently and I have a query regarding correct form for the one arm dumbbell row for lats as show here:

    http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/BackGeneral/DBBentOverRow.html

In that link you will see the demonstrator do the exercise with a back at a virtually horizontal position. However almost without exception the seasoned gym-goers I see do it without the use of a bench, bent over at an angle grabbing onto something in front of them like the stair rail with the back at some sort of angle like 45 degrees or so.

Could that be some fad in my gym to do it that way or maybe some other exercise altogether like for rear delts?

Rear delt rows are different to normal rows, as seen here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8Et20_7QhY

I've seen people do all sorts of variations for one arm rows, using benches, racks and at different angles too. Whatever works for you is the best advice I can give. The more you bend over, the less you work your lower back and vice versa. Personally I've only ever used a bench and bent over 90' and that's worked for me as I feel a nice stretch and is a good exercise for the lats and rhomboids.

You're over thinking it. Both variations have their uses.

Just do the one in the exrx video.
