Going to try an keep a log here. Read lots of others and it looks a good way to keep me motivated. Bit of background. Ran on the track when I was younger. 800-3000 metres. Was handy enough and made all Ireland's etc. lost the run of myself in my 20s and now am slowly getting back into things. My aim is to run the tralee marathon next year as it's my dad's neck of the woods. Was considering dublin but I've still some wait to loose and fitness to gain. Anyway so far this week

M: 6 miles fastish on da roads
T: 5 miles fartlek all on grass
W: 6 miles very slowly. Was wrecked after two fast days
    T: 5.5 miles at a comfortable pace.

Will probably update this once or twice a week. I have to find a few races to do in a month or so to get an idea how my training is going. Have never ran a marathon before so any advice on a good plan etc would be good

Welcome to the forum. Not sure how much you've been doing in general but take it handy if you're just getting back into it. Rest days are important too. But good luck and keep it up.

So how many rest days would you recomend. I only really take them when i am very tired or cannot get out because I have not got the time

Well I'm not the most qualified to give you specific advice but it depends on your running history at this point. If you want to runa a marathon next year you would benefit from having a good base of running behind you when you start the plan. That will allow you to gradually ramp up the distances per week without risking injury. What's your current weekly mileage, averaged over the last few months?

about 40 to 50 miles a week. I got a loan of a garmin so will start using that next week. If it goes well I might bye one.

friday 7 fast miles was nice and sunny so just ran as hard as i could
saturday 3 very slow miles. Was very tired after the run on friday
sunday 9 good miles. very humid today

am thinking of doing a time trial next week to help me set my paces. The garmin should help with this. I think

so ive got this garmin watch GPS as a loan and i am very impresed. I love seeing my paces and distance and I think it is going to help my training so will probably by one myself

monday 7.12 miles in 50 minutes 3 seconds. I was feeling ok so let the legs go.
tuesday 2.93 miles in 22 minutes 5 seconds. wanted to take it easy b4 the time trial
wednesday 5k trial in 17 minutes 11 seconds. if you had of told me last month i could run 17 minutes for 5k i wood have been happy but i felt rubbish today and it just goes to show how much work i have to do to get back to where i was. tat probably won't happen but i would like to try and get close. I suppose it is a start. A friend of mine rekons i should try a park run. I had not heard of these but they look ideal. I do n't want to enter a real race just yet but these look perfect for me. I didn't have lap paces set up but i slowed down badly in the last 1 kilometre so have to continue working on my fitness

thursday, wrecked. just about 20 minute run on grass. mite take tomorrow off. I think i strained my hamstring with the time trial yesterday. noting serious but will take it very easy. definitely not currently built for speed.

You ever think of just going out and time trialling a mara in the next few weeks just to set a marker?

Dar, if you need drinks or gels or anything, let me know - I'll be out on the course supporting. I don't know if you are aware but they've changed the course and made it substantially easier.

They've taken out Barrow hill (v steep and a glycogen sapper) around the 10 mile mark and Fenit pier. They've also taken a 1k drag out around the 22 mile mark and a downhill stretch around 24.5. So, the first 15 miles are relatively flat with 9.5k of the Banna 10k in there (very flat). It still has a good few hills in the second half but it's defo a lot easier. If the weather's bad it'll be a beast out there but so far the weather's been great on race day.

Monday day off because of interview and some socializing
Tuesday 7 mile in 50 minutes exactly. Legs feeling fresh after day of rest
Wednesday around 8 miles on grass nice and slow. No watch
Thursday 6/7 miles with 8 by 800 meters with 100 seconds recovery. These were very tough. Ran them on a gravel track. First 3 where all below 2mins 30 seconds but last 5 were high 2.3s and last one was actually 2mins 44 seconds. Pretty bad wind on the back straight.

friday 5 miles decided to do a race on saturday so took it very easy the day before
saturday i saw the simon comunity was organizing a 5 mile in the park so i went along. i ran this race years ago when was a kid so was looking forward to it i went out a bit to hard the first 2 miles around 5.30 to 5.40 pace. i really suffered the last 2 mils and finished in 31 minutes. got caught by first 2 ladies near the finish pissed off didnt break the 30 minutes but better pacing will help next time
sunday 10 miles easy back to the park for this was hoping i could find someone to run with but had no luck. i bumped into an old friend who was on his bike and he stayed with me for a few miles so that did help

friday 5 miles very easy on the road
saturday 20 minutes from res back into the city. went to expo with my friend to pick up jis number great atmosphere around
sunday day off and a few afternoon pints not great idea day before long run
monday ran the first 15 miles of the dublin marathon with my friend. i was going to keep going but i think i would have only lasted another 5 miles. i have friends around 15 miles so stopped off there and then got a lift back into city for the finish. my friend did really well. he ran under 4 hours but we probably ran first bit too hard. can't wait to run a marathon myself
