I have a field that I meant to burn off but grass went strong and id took a bit to graze. the thing is im sure it will be too late to spray and reseed?
if I didn't burn it off first and just ploughed and had the grass seed in by the weekend? or if I did spray and gave it 3-4 days and ploughed would it burn away still when the sod is turned once it has started? if I gave it a double dose of roundup would it speed it up anybit?

Roundup needs at least a week, preferably 10 days. It's probably getting late for clover, maybe get a mix without clover and put clover on with spinner next Spring/Summer after weeds are sprayed with cheaper spray. Depends how far south you are.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

I don't use clover anyway just straight grass and blow out the fert. im nearly down as south as it gets (south cork).

Sowed 22nd September last year got great crop, was stubble ground though.

It's not too late, the man next door to me was at it yesterday, I've sown in October and got away with it.
I'd be tempted to just plough and sow now but a strong rate of Roundup and plough as you say after four days should see you right anyway. I wouldn't go double rate, waste of money really. As growth slows so Roundup becomes less effective and needs a lot longer time to work, so now is the time to go..

MTC is giving good weather for another while - the azores high is putting up a good fight. This is good for a late reseed on good ground. Would be good to get post-emergence and a graze in before closing for the winter though. They would be the limiting factors for me.

If you were to have grass seeds in by this wknd the latest you should get away with it once weather stays somewhere normal for this time of year(rule of thumb I go by once its in by 10 of sept it,l be grand). Not sure about the spreading it with round up though.

If the fields not too weedy and your plowing down anyway would you really need to spray??

Reseeded last year, 2 separate fields. Sowed 1 Sept 4th. Sowed 2nd on Sept 19th. I see pics of it struck on Sept 25th. Turned out the finest.

Is there a lad up your country with a gutler?

Ploughing down stubbles tomorrow. Powerharrow & have grass seed in by the weekend. Plan to graze with a few sheep. Will broadcast clover on it nxt April and cover with slurry. Think it will be fine, given the year thats in it. Ground conditions are good and fine weather promised. At least this way will have grass nxt spring, rather than looking at stubbles all winter.

Does the field need to be ploughed? If not spray straight away, dd and spread two tonnes of lime and two bags 10-10-20. It's getting late imo so the sooner the better.

Well my uncle is reseeding a field at the minute in swords ( like 2 fields away from where they where queing up for the new houses. ) he says it's not to late as he does one every year around tgis time because he always lets out a field to a spud grower. He sometimes sows in October too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 282 ✭✭Lambofdave

up to the end of the month is grand and even first few days of october, at the moment ground is so dry any reseed is struggling to get started.

Reseeded an area at bottom of lawn, around a quarter acre (big lawn) in last week of Sept, green shoots are popping up but slowly and one or two small bare patches....if we get a mild rest of October (which is way its looking) and a decent November....will it thicken up a bit?
Area would be a bit exposed to an easterly breeze at times.

Should do give it a coat of slurry and it will be grand. Joking aside give it a bit of P&K and a very small bit of N. Do the same in January.

Good news is grass is coming on nicely.....the few bare patches are still bare tho:(....seed must not have germinated there,is it too late now to ruffle it up with rake and throw some seed in it?....weather still quite mild,I know the short days would prob lessen greatly the chance of seed working??

Bumping up as might throw seed down this evening as its dry here,so would it be better to wait till Spring or like Jim Carey said in Dumb and Dumber....is there a chance it would grow for rest of November?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,326 ✭✭✭Farmer Pudsey

I just throw seed on bare patches maybe tred it in, no point intrying to till a seed bed. Then hope for the best.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,863 ✭✭✭Bleating Lamb

Threw on the grass seed with help of a Petzl head lamp;)...only about a third of a bag so won't put out lights if it fails....but would be great if the mild spell continued,on car here at 10pm it was 8 deg.

Yes it may or you could get a mild winter that will allow it to grow on. visa versa it may not germinate until february and then grow, It a few bar patched in a lawn not a five acre field.

Tou should jhave used the slurry first time you put the seed out

The only fert you can put on now is muriate of potash (50%K) but it is hard enough to be got. I have a crop of redstart that looked a bit sick after weanlings broke into it and it came on well after it got a bag to the hectare. I hope we don't get this hard frost that everyone is predicting......

If it does materialise I hope the ground is rock hard on Jan 15th so we can get some benefit out of it

They can predict all they want but any weather forecast after 4 days get less reliable the further ahead they forecast. Why do people still believe in these nonsense season in advance forecasts spouted by the media?

Took a few pics of bare areas on lawn yday....10 wks after putting seed down....the grass grew....took them on Iphone 4 and then saved them to computer, when I tried to stick them up here, they would load 100%....and then say 'service 503 unavailable'????
Can there be issues uploading photos onto boards?

There can be but I've not seen any issues for a while. Try uploading just one at first, perhaps they're massive, have you resized them in any way? I generally use an image hosting site as it's easier, especially if the pics are on the mobile.

Slightly big but shouldn't be a problem, just won't be able to embed them as they'll 'split' the page displayed here.

Image hosting site would be imgur/tinypic/photobucket, basically if you sign up to them for a (free!) account they can store all your images digitally so you can embed them elsewhere. Imgur is very easy, you don't even need an account. Then just copy & paste the BBCode ( for message boards & forums) here and it'll embed. Or any of the links that appear up and I'll fix it :P

as I started the thread, I might aswell give an update since it has loomed up again. Anyway sprayed off the field at the end last year and let it for the week and ploughed tilled and set grass seeds. grass is flying it. Came on really well. might give it a blast of urea in a few weeks. Stock wont be on it until probably late march as it would probably be too soft until then (not soft land in general but ploughing always makes the land that bit fresher). end result = very happy.

Maybe a compound fertiliser would suit better than urea, new reseeds are always a bit p+k hungry.
