Treating a new fence

    Hello,
    I'm buildng a fence out of untreated planks and I want to treat/seal them in white with the wood grain showing through.
    Cuprinol and the like will cost me an arm and a leg.
    Could I just add plenty white spirit to any decent (oil-based) white exterior wood paint to get the same effect for a lot less money? Would it be as good at protecting the wood?
