    Statement here
The International Rugby Board (IRB) will undergo a second name change in 16 years when it becomes formally known as World Rugby in November as part of a rebranding programme, the sport's governing body said on Thursday.

Strange. It's going to take a while to get used to that anyway.

They should have added 'Union' to title as there are two brands of rugby.

well at least 3 different types, as wheelchair rugby does also share the name

They should have added 'Union' to title as there are two brands of rugby.

But then people would think that the 'union' referred to the organisation, rather than the sport. (European Union, African Union, trade unions etc).

Could well be a very deliberate two fingers to the working class oiks of the league game too.

FWIW, I think this is awful and pointless.

I imagine the chances of them being confused with league anywhere outside Australia or Northern England are vanishingly small.

    4 Brands:

    Rugby
    Touch Rugby
    Tag Rugby
    Rugby Sevens

    That is all.

Or the Irish Republican Brotherhood have taken a case for copyright infringement.

Strange unnecessary move to a **** name.

The press release seems to imply that the Rugby World Cup's branding will be reviewed after next years tournament in England, though for the moment they'll presumably just airbrush out the "iRB" from the logo.

Of course, the trophy itself continues to have "International Rugby Football Board" engraved on it!

No its not all .... won't be long before we have ...

    Rugby Ireland
    Rugby Scotland
RFU (England will refuse to rebrand itself) :D
    Rugby Wales etc. etc.

    Not uncommon.

The trophy for the Challenge Cup in Rugby League is engraved with the "Northern Rugby Football Union"... So not only is it a different branding of a sporting organisation, it's a different code entirely! (And, I think, what forced the creation of Rugby League in the first place)

IRB always evoked an image for me of some Very Serious & Competent Men all sitting around a huge table. Very cool.

World Rugby doesnt come across as an authority, it sounds like some wishy washy happy huggy time amusement park.

I think with the growth of Rugby (both Union & League, more so Union) the IRB are jumping ahead and want to be known as the main Rugby. Could be perceived as two fingers up to League or getting ahead of the game. Might not be popular but I suppose people don't like change and I think World Rugby actually sounds better than International Rugby Board and is in line with Europe Rugby as earlier mentioned. After the 2015 World Cup and Rio Olympics and recent successful Womens World Cup the game will grow even more around the world and they are preparing for this.

IRB are known as the main rugby (insofar as they're known at all).

Rugby Union dwarfs league internationally so much that the latter is basically a non-event outside two localised areas. It's obviously to fit in with some organised branding with Rugby Europe and maybe some others. Doubt they even gave league a second though.

What growth in league? Some of the major clubs in England appear to be in constant financial trouble, only 3 international sides . The rest are made up of Aussies who went on a holiday once and are now eligible to play for that country
