TWITTERATI OFFENDED - So ban those cute cowboy baby pyjamas, you fcuking Nazi lovers.

Clothing retailer Zara has been forced to withdraw a cute childs pyjama top from their Cowboy Baby Range because a few people have likened it to the uniform worn by inmates in Nazi concentration camps.

The top which features horizontal stripes and a sewn-on yellow star emblazoned with the word SHERIFF has been pulled from all outlets and internet sales by Zara. Some, (with overactive imaginations) have likened the sheriff badge emblem to the Jewish Star of David.

The top was clearly not designed to resemble the holocaust uniforms in any way. They had vertical stripes.

Is it right that a few people who claim to be offended by something can have so much influence over the purchasing choices of rest of us and deny us our right to buy pyjamas for our little children?

Saw that earlier. Bit of an over the top reaction imo. If i saw a kid wearing that i'd think cowboy before concentration camp prisoner.

I honestly don't understand why any major company uses or cares about twitter, nothing but insta-outrage trollish soundbites

I suppose it's as well the grand old Swastika laundry folded when it did.

It was giving German tourists heart attacks well into the 80's. Those red vans with a black swastika on a white background.... can you imagine that in the modern day and age with the internet?

To me, It does look like a prison inmate uniform way more than anything else, I wouldn't think holocaust though.

As a prisoner who wears striped clothes I find this very offensive.

pale blue and white stripes on pjs - yes
Breast pocket star on pjs - yes
Stripes AND star on pjs - maybe not

Blue stripes and a yellow star?

Not a great look for a baby, unless Auschwitz survivor is the look you're actually aiming for.

the Israeli office going as far as saying that they will “exterminate” the pajamas, creating another mini-controversy in the process.
Had to laugh at pjs being exterminated. :o

Other sources - LBC and BBC

I only mentioned the Mail in my OP as that is usually the publication of choice in After Hours when it comes to discussing matters like this.

    political correctness gone mad, (Joe).

No but seriously, over the top.

Have you ever thought about the amount of times you see the words "Appalling", "Outrage", or "Shocking" on Twitter?

They live in a constant state of panic.

Fcuking shower must have adrenal glands the size of footballs.

I was expecting to go into it thinking it was an overreaction to something innocuous but those pyjamas really do look like concentration camp uniforms.

    Yeah they do, a bit.

But if you've survived the concentration camps, or if your relatives did, I'm sure your skin is a lot thicker than tweeting @Zara to express your horror at thoughtless Mommy buying allowed buy these pyjamas for her six-year old.

When I look at those pajamas, I feel grateful for the absence of any right of mine to feel offended by them.

    Yep.
Dont know if I'd go so far as to ban them - but no kids of mine would be wearing them, looks mental, how much more similar could a design get. Only a buffoon or a crafty advertising dept would put that on the shelf.

They weren't "banned" though, Zara decided to withdraw them from sale after seeing the reaction. It was their choice to do this so I don't see why the OP's made a big deal of it.

Saying they were "Forced to withdraw" them is simply wrong, unless I'm missing something.

"Banned" suggests some external body forced them into it though, when this wasn't the case. I'm only trying to clarify what actually happened, call me a language nazi again and I'll be dressing you up in the pyjamas :pac:

Ah now it does look a little bit like Hitler if you turn your head sideways and squint at it.

Sales must be bad if they have to create this kind of publicity for themselves!

As for the item, it is quite clearly intended to be offensive and need to be withdrawn! Everyone knows a sheriff's badge is a 5 pointed star not 6 and also that stripes are only for bad cowboys who end up breaking stones on the chain gang/labour camp.

Shame on this miserable company for doing this awful thing just to sell their overpriced clothes.

It's the armbands with Jude written on them that I think they should stop selling.

It does look like concentration camp clothes, but I don't know if I'm only seeing it because of all the outrage about it or would I have noticed it anyway. If I just saw a random kid wearing it without having read a bunch of people complaining about how it looks Holocaust-y, I don't know that I would see the similarities. Once one person points something out though, you can't stop seeing it.

To address your pedantry, I'm not calling for anything to be banned.

The headline in my OP is simply a reflection of the will of the permanently offended, (and worse - those who seek to be offended on behalf of others).

The ever present outrage of the twitterati and people like those who queue up to vent their spleen on Liveline everyday ensure that Zara had little choice but to take this item off the market as they were effectively 'forced to withdraw' it due to the negative publicity generated by the chronically appalled.

Those who rush to judgement to complain about such things must have little for doing but I suppose it gives them something to occupy their time before jumping into their SUV to collect their kids from school 300 yards away.

I had to stare at the picture for a few seconds before I copped what the issue was. The stripes are horizontal and stars weren't worn on the pyjamas. But this has been pointed out already. Fuss about nothing.

With a cowboy hat etc., maybe.

Just like that on its own, I saw a camp uniform straight away, there's no two ways about it. How NOBODY in Zara saw even a passing ressemblance, I do not know.

Regardless of the direction of the stripes it is a bit ott. The boy in the striped pyjamas immediately comes to mind. Correct to withdraw it.

It really makes you wonder do some of these designers actually stand back and look at what they just put together. Anyone who has a clue about history would take one look at that and go "errr that looks a bit dodgy alright"!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,780 ✭✭✭Frank Lee Midere

    They probably did this.

    1) create a range of clothing with stripes, plain colours etc.
    2) add different badges

One of them upset the Internet.

Depends on the age of the designer, Most kids these days don't know what happened 75 minutes ago never mind 75 years ago.

I read the story this morning and the first thing I thought when I saw them was "concentration camp". They look exactly like a concentration camp uniform. I had to read the story to see that they were supposedly a sheriffs uniform. I thought that everyone would think like me, but after reading the thread, obviously not everyone does.

It might be a sheriffs outfit but it is extremely like a concentration camp outfit.
