    Hi there,

I am in China for a couple of weeks and was wondering if there is anything worth buying before heading home. Electronics, clothes etc, is it worth buying or is it all just cheap imitation stuff.

If you stick with proper shops which don't ell fake/dodgy products, you won't find great deals on products that you could also buy here (electronics, western brands' clothing, etc).

Depending on the brands clothes will go from a bit cheaper to outrageously expensive.

If you are looking for cheap electronics and clothes, the only "good" deals might be for local brands if you want them - for example Xiaomi for phones or Li-Ning for sportswear. Or you can always find cheap unbranded or fake products - but I personally don't see the point.

Otherwise obviously if you are interested things like speciality tea or local crafts which you won't find here.

If you're going to Hong Kong, then I believe there may be electronics bargains to be had. Otherwise, foreign named brands of anything (except McDonald's) are expensive. For example, Apple products are 20% MORE EXPENSIVE THAN IRELAND even though they're made in Shanghai.

You could get some decent duty free on the way out and back. Otherwise, just keep your eyes peeled for local tat you like the look of.

Me? I bought some socks in Uniqlo, some Feiyue plims, local tea, a handwoven scarf from one of the southern provinces. Just bits, really. If you're going to any of those places like Dali, Lijiang, they're tourist traps and are basically outdoor shopping centres mostly full of awful tat.

I spent a few months living in China a couple of yeas ago. From what I remember electronics weren't a whole lot cheaper than they are over here. Laptops seemed more expensive over there (unless I missed a decimal point in the conversion?!) And I didn't really bother looking at clothes too much but I'd say you get good value if you go to the right places.

What you really need to take advantage of over there is the food. Be sure to try proper Chinese hotpot and Peking duck pancakes. If you like your food hot and spicy, try find a place that specialises in Sichuan or Chongqing food. Also check out their baked goods - there was a particular type of soft round bread over there that had this bluey/purple stuff in the middle (think it was some variety of bean paste) that was seriously lovely.

*sigh* I wish I was back in China now. :(

They've got some pretty good quality octa-core smartphones going for next to nothing. I've been thinking of ordering one online for a while.

    This one in particular

Beijing semi-steamed dumplings are class! Indeed, go nuts on the food. Basically, food's so cheap, just order everything. The typical way is that you order, everything comes when it's ready, and if you're still hungry, order more. God I'd kill for that Sechuan red chilli crispy chicken on Ghost Street in Beijing right not.

Ask around about a tenim square museum, see if you can get a print of your man standing in front of the tank.

I'm building my house in Leitrim with bricks stole from The Great Wall of China. Nearly done too and its a good thing as I'm expecting an incursion from the mongols outside any day now.

Bought a load of DVDs over there, it was before the time of Netflix etc. The problem is that (even I after I put them all in sleeves) they took a lot of luggage room. Clothes is another thing you could look at, desperately cheap but the quality can often match the price - worth a look though.

I didn't have a clue what it was at the time. I only googled afterwards to find out what it was. Apparently bean paste is a very common snack filling in China and Japan.

Not sure what else it could have been, and I don't particularly want to imagine what else it might have been! Whatever it was, the important thing is it was tasty. :p
