Well information on the ground is thin. But Rte are reporting a southern hemisphere international over 30 has been arrested in relation to an assault in Dublin a number of years ago.

I presume mods would prefer we didn't speculate.

    Correct. Nay speculation.

Presumably once he appears in court his name will be out there anyway. A European arrest warrant was out for him so presume he's playing in the NH.

Due in 5 minutes. He arrived on appointment, so he must have come up here to appear in court.

supposedly in court at half 4 so it appears it was planned that he come

  • Indo have said it's from an incident three years ago in a nightclub, over for a game playing for an English side.

Yeah looks like the name will be out there very sharpish once the proceedings are done so best not speculate till it's revealed in the press.

    It's awec.

It is Alesana Tuilagi. He presented himself for questioning. Apparently there is CCTV evidence of him involved. Did Leicster play in Dublin that year?

I thought it was going to be Ian Evans for stamping on someone's head while they were on the ground.

I wonder did they put all the Tuilagis in the identity parade!

Deep down I knew it wouldn't be Tana Umaga

I presume that too much speculation of this outside what's covered in the press would run afoul of Sub Judice?

Correct. Absolutely no speculation about the facts of the case except what has been reported in the media. ANY posting about the facts of the case should include a link to back up what has been posted.

But aren't we, the common people, the twitterazzi, the facebookians, the bloggers, aren't we the media these days?

I'm all for looking cool - not sure though a court is the right place , especially when you are up on serious assault charges , he may regret this lack of respect

Doesn't exactly show much respect to the courts does it?

put it this way , if I was up for assault charges in the UK, Oz or the U.S. I wouldn't wear flip flops & shorts to court

But this is Ireland and he is from UK, Oz or U.S.

Well the fact that they let him leave the country after charging him probably means his attire didn't dirty his bib too much. Plus you'd imagine he could afford a standard of legal advice that may extend to appropriate attire for hearings.

I have an Islander friend and he considers runners overdressed. I'm all for cultural understanding, but his council should have (and might have) told him to wear something more appropriate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,619 ✭✭✭✭errlloyd

He was arrested off the plane, it's entirely possible he intended to get changed before presenting himself at the police station. Because of the nature of those preliminary hearings (the accused often being brought against their will) the judge will be more than used to dealing with people in all sorts of attire.

To any of ye who have been unlucky enough to have to sit through a day in the district courts (I've sat through a few) I'd say most of the people presenting are in casual attire. For minor offences like traffic crimes it's not unusual to see a motorcyclist wearing all his gear bar helmet go up.

It's the judges call, if he found his dress unacceptable he could have asked him to change, obviously he didn't & it won't harm his defence

I'd be more concerned that he wore flip flops here after the weather we've been having.

    That s*** be crazy!

Actually due to the ongoing nature of the case, it's one of the only aspects of the case we can openly discuss without me having to lock the thread.

Other then that, WTF were newcastle thinking of signing someone with an outstanding European arrest warrant?

I hate calling jandals, flip flops but thought I better otherwise our Irish brothers (and sisters) would get confused.

Well going on your use of the English language I'd guess you're in shorts, a hoodie and flip flops right now.
I wonder if he had fresh dreads put in or did he have the cheek to show up with old frayed ones?!

Would it be much to assume that clubs complete background checks before offering a contract?

    Podge in thongs...hmmm not really.

I had a female Aussie flatmate a few years ago. One day the lads are over to watch a game of rugby. She comes downstairs and says "Have you seen my thongs? I can't remember where I left my thongs!" She was quite puzzled by the stunned silence and the looks of shock that slowly changed to big grins.

It's hardly public knowledge, is it?

You could ask if he'd have been better off staying in Japan or going back to Samoa but I guess his family are in England.

Rugby player on assault charge shocker!!

Look, nobody should be getting in fights anyway but it must be exceptionally hard for lads who play physical sports like rugby, boxing etc. to not get into the odd physical confrontation in a nightclub. Every fella in the place will think they are a hard man when they're full of juice late in the night and the professional sports people have a massive target on their back when it comes to idiots looking for fights.

I'm not excusing what Tuilagi has done and maybe he even started it but just coming from my own experiences of what I've seen a lot of professional sports people have to have the patience of a saint sometimes.

    This +1.
Years ago after the Sharks had played the Blues at Eden Park, I saw some idiot trying to pick a fight with Mark Andrews and 3 or 4 other Sharks players in a bar. They were the models of restraint. The bouncers threw the guy out and then a bit later when the Sharks were leaving, he tried to have another go. Moron. The bouncers came over and dragged him down a dark alley for a quiet chat.
