I’ve made up my mind here that Pearl Secret is completely the wrong price here and in my view is actually 3rd favourite in this field. There isn’t a lot between him and Hot Steak and unless Shea Shea can produce the goods tomorrow it is going to be difficult to knock him out of the places. With all that said Sole Power doesn’t even need to be at his best to win this comfortably. It is difficult to know what bet to make here, but ill go with a decent EW Bet as I figure him as a 9/1 shot really and 50% margins can’t be refused any time. Ill also go for a 1 point spend on a small Tote Trifecta on Betfair with the above 4 Horses Mentioned.

2 Points EW 18/1 Pearl Secret Stan James ¼ the odds 123

1 Point Tote Trifecta Betfair Pearl Secret, Sole Power, Hot Steak, Shea Shea

    Lahaag
has been quietly improving this year while steadily dropping in handicap mark and arrives here on an over-generous looking mark of 92. He won a handicap last year over this c&d off 5 lbs higher and in general has a very decent record at York. 16/1 looks generous and worth of a decent EW Bet

    2 Points EW 16/1 Generally

    Rangali 14/1

With doubts about Sole Power's readiness owing to a bout of ringworm which caused him to miss 10 days of work and forecast rain not in his favour, I'm quite sweet on the chances of the Henri Alex Pantall trained Rangali who looks to be a sprinter improving at a rate of knots and who is actually the 2nd highest rated horse in the field (1lb inferior to that of the market leader). Having been campaigned over 7f/1 mile in his 2 year old season, Rangali has really thrived as a sprinter this season and this speedball has excelled since dropping below 6f. Having been keen on his first 3 starts this season, Rangali appreciated the drop back to 5.5f as he commandingly won a Listed contest at Maisons-Laffitte back in May by nearly 2L in testing conditions. On his next and final start, Rangali took the step up to Group 2 Company in his stride with a really impressive display dropped to the minimum trip as he comprehensively dispatched of last years Prix De L'Abbaye 2nd Catcall with great authority as he quickened clear with a furlong to go to record an impressive and ready success. Back in 4th that day was the useful yardstick Stepper Point (who finished 2nd to Sole Power in the Kings Stand on his next start) and I was very impressed with his performance. Taking a keen hold was an issue with Rangali up until recently and the drop in trip/learning with racing have seen this 3 year old settle better in his races and resultantly he's been able to showcase his true ability on his last 2 outings and with a lot of natural pace I think he's a real 5f specialist in the making. If trained in Britain, I've no doubt that Rangali would be a much shorter price judged on the form he has shown and rating he has achieved and I certainly think he's been overlooked in the market in what looks far from a vintage renewal, Sole Power aside. Drawn in stall 11, I hope Rangali sits on the tail of front runner Take Cover as this should suit him ideally and, looking through the runners, I'll genuinely be quite surprised if Rangali is out of the first 3. Despite concerns raised by Eddie Lynam, Sole Power remains the one they all have to beat but I'm very happy to oppose him with this progressive 3 year old sprinter who I think has a touch of class which I cant say about a lot of the field. Seemingly versatile with regards to the ground, I think the blistering speed they go in the Nunthorpe should suit Rangali ideally and I think this 3 year old has a great chance of bringing home this Group 1 prize to France.

    2.30 York

Initial thoughts were that Cavalryman was bomb proof, but Pale Mimosa looks unbelievably short,so my confidence has wavered

Think it might be the reverse forecast

Apparently Pale Mimosa needs a bit of juice in the ground. I was told that's why she was taken out of the Gold cup at Ascot but then she went on to win at Leopardstwon on good/firm. Maybe they think she can get away with it in listed races but to be at her best she needs juice.

Eddie Lynam wasn't exactly brimful of confidence about his chances today either.

Any reason Danny Tudhope is on David O Meara's second string today while Richard Hughes rides That is The Sprit?

Any thought today Rossom, you seemed to think a lot of him didn't handle the step up in class but back down in class today.

unable to do the weight I would say

Thought Rerouted should be at least joint fav today. 7 furlongs on good or better ground is what he wants and he's at least a group three performer on that. Some of these he's facing are comin from handicap and probably need to still improve a bit, while Cable Bay has been off the track for about 10 months and looking at the form of his Dewhurst run his rating may well be exaggerated. At 9/1 I thought he's about three points too big.

Shea Shea may have disappointed last time but at his very best he is at least as good as Sole Power. Worth a chance at the prices circa 10/1

Too late.. Backed him AntePost at 3/1, weather man made a balls of me. I'd take him on with Cougar Mountain at 15/2 given the ease in the ground.

What is the going at York currently?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,933 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

More horses than cash to back today :pac:

6:35 Hamilton - Ralphy Boy - Backed this one last time out at a big price of 14/1 and was chinned on the line. This one is down in trip today and remains in class 4 company. The drop in distance is probably what it needs given the ground being that bit more softer. Would be expecting this one to make all and hopefully have enough left in the tank to hold on at the finish. Only negative is the jockey who has not been able to buy a winner in the last 2 years. Maybe today will be the day.

8:10 Hamilton - Live Dangerously - Another pick following the same strategy as Ralphy Boy. Horse is down in trip, would expect it to be ridden prominently and hopefully hold on. The unexposed Irish horse Elusive Gent could be a big threat though. At 10/1 there's a lot more value to be had in the well handicapped Dalgleish runner.

Ive been told to back Munaaser in the 4.55 at York. Apparently this fella has been beating Stoute's winner Bragging with ease on the gallops. Bragging won easy off 97 yesterday by 3 lengths and Munaaser runs off 94 today. Only 2/1 but if the rumours ive heard are right then this should be a winner.

Anyone see Gabrial the hero. Looks as if Spencer stopped riding in the last 1/2 furlong ??

He lost it coming out of the stalls. Looks like Spencer has already taken semi-retirement.

Hoping Pale Mimosa's previous course form will be an advantage here.

I saw that but looked like getting a place but spencer look to pull the reigns in the last 1/2 furlong. Thought maybe something was wrong with the horse

I had a bet of a tonne on a horse called Palace Moon around January in a six furlong handicap at Lingfield who got beaten a head by Absolutely So who won off a mark of 77. He's rated about 35 lbs above that now after winning that. Talk about bumping into one

Smullen gave her a confident ride. Looked to have them all covered a few furlongs out. Estimate ran on well close home but never looked like she'd peg back the winner.

Over 5/2 (less 5% deduction) on Betfair now. Raised 12lb for very easy win last time out but could be different class to these

Only reaction anyone could have to Sole Power was 'Wow'. Eddie Lynam has had a ridiculous season with his sprinters.

Can't believe Able Spirit is 50s in the next at York. Ran a fine 4th amongst greenness on debut and Brian Meehan's horses always improve for their first run. Fallon booked and I wouldn't be surprised if he ran a big race.

Ryan Moore is the best jockey hands down
