Alcohol Abuse Test

I noticed lately that I am drinking way more often than I usually would, I can no longer really resist having a drink with dinner or in the evening. I might have three days gap but would generally drink at least four times a week. Not extremely heavily, but maybe some wine or cans with friends, sometimes a few glasses of wine by myself.

I just did an alcohol abuse test and have been told to immediately contact a professional because I scored a ten out of twenty six! I know I do drink a little more than maybe most but this is alarming!

What result did you get? I am either going to be very comforted or extremely worried. Alcoholism does run in my family and I am trying to cut down.

I couldve written your op myself!

Did the test and got 9. I think some of the questions are a bit silly though, eg "can you drink more now than when you first started drinking?" surely everyone can...?

Well I answered yes to four of those questions.

    1. I have had nights were I don't remember some parts
    2. I usually have a reason for heavy drinking occasions (I thought this meant like, a night out, rather than just getting bladdered for the sake of it)
    3. I have sometimes failed to keep promised I've made to myself to curb my drinking - that's true - I've said I'll go out and have one, and then gotten drunk.
    4. I can drink less now than I used to be able to - I assumed that was down to age?

Still and all. It suggests I go to a professional to seek help.

    Oh dear.

I scored 2 because I have a higher alcohol tolerance than when I first started drinking and I blacked out once about 13 years ago. That still means I should seek advise about my drinking problem apparently.

I got 8 and I haven't had an alcoholic drink in nearly six years, :-( must be all the tea so...

First time I drank I was very tipsy on 2 cans, I drink more than that now. I must be an alcoholic :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 893 ✭✭✭danslevent

I just feel like I may be developing a bit of a problem because I want to cut down, but then don't and I love drinking alone. I know that may be weird, but I find nothing more relaxing than wine and a book or watching tv.

A score of 2 or more and you should seek help?? Not written with the Irish attitude to drinking in mind methinks....

7 not too bad at all! seems perfectly reasonable to me! ;)

I go for a few pints once a week or every other week, I have about 4 pints when I do.

That site scored me a 3 and told me I needed to seek professional help. Now I am all for things that help people but that is nonsense. NCADD p seems to be affiliated with one of the founders of AA, which is a religious programme so no surprise that it's overly puritanical...

The fact that questions have "ever" in them makes it a bit silly IMO.

Danslevent; If ye drinking habits trouble ye? Then ye have a problem.

Me? Eight to ten pints a day. So, pretty much permanently pissed. I get up. Sort my shid out. Couple of mugs of tea. Hit the lash.

So what? I'm retired. I live alone, pretty much in isolation from the community at large. I Don't drink the one day I go into town. (Well, two pints spread over four hours?)

I bother no one. It doesn't bother me. I can afford it (I home brew ;)) and it has no impingement on my feelings of health or happiness. I'm an irritatingly happy little soul, in fact :)

But, those sad sacks would probably want me on the ward. F**k 'em!

    TL/DR; Get Pissed! :D

If this is true you are an alcoholic and are doing yourself serious damage. But sure, if you're happy enough, what harm. You aren't hurting anyone else I suppose.

I scored 5. Apparently I should seek professional help, joke of a survey.

    That test is absolute bollox.

    Your Self-Test Score: 14.

I hardly ever drink at all and I get a 14 which is " serious level of alcohol-related problems requiring immediate attention and possible treatment."

2 Can you handle more alcohol now than when you first started to drink?

21 Have you recently noticed that you can't drink as much as you used to?

    13. Have you tried switching brands or drinks, or following different plans to control your
    drinking? Yes
    14. Have you sometimes failed to keep promises you made to yourself about controlling or

Edit: Actually probably should have been 19, I suppose I do feel guilty about drinking from time to time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,665 ✭✭✭Tin Foil Hat

A few of those question fall under the category of, "When did you stop beating your wife?".

Do you usually have a reason for the occasions when you drink heavily?
Do you sometimes feel a little guilty about your drinking?
Have you ever gone to anyone for help about your drinking?

Not to mention the idiocy of equally weighting the questions when totting up the score.
"Do you sometimes stay drunk for several days at a time?", and, "After periods of drinking do you sometimes see or hear things that aren’t there?" score the same as - " Have any of your blood relatives ever had a problem with alcohol?"
    Fukkin LOL! Worst test ever!

    8 for me, btw.

    I scored 4.

I think it's unfair some of those questions. The one about "Do you feel guilty after drinking?" is confusing because what THEY mean by guilt is that you feel you shouldn't drink. My feeling of guilt is that I had a drink the night before and probably should have left it til the weekend.

The problem with some of the questions is the vagueness. Like trying to cut down on drinking, looking forward to a pint or regretting drinking could be applicable to a normal drinker or a serious drinking depending on the scale or the person involved

The one about seeing things that are not there after a few days drinking is pretty much unequivocal to be fair .

    It is.

Plus, of course, once ye become a 'career drinker', the alcohol builds up in the blood till it never quite gets flushed. I could Never drive a motor, eg. My blood level would always be over the limit.

I need a drink, within an hour of getting up. Yet, I function better With the drink. I'd rattle apart without it! But, sure; I'm grand.

What I'm trying to convey to OP is; If the speed of Your ride is starting to scare ye? Get yeself off that ride. Being scared of what we're doing is very healthy ;)

I got 10 but that test is crap. It'd be a bot better if they had a "often/sometimes/rarely/never" set up like.

    2. Can you handle more alcohol now than when you first started to drink?
I started drinking when I was about 14, I hardly think not being langered after three smirnoff ices is an alarm bell
    7. Do you sometimes feel a little guilty about your drinking? Is this test written to deliberately antagonise people from an Irish Catholic background or WHAT?!
    8. Has a family member or close friend express concern or complained about your drinking? Again, have they ever met an Irish mammy?
    12. When you’re sober, do you sometimes regret things you did or said while drinking? Ah for god's sake.

Those are just the most stupid ones. Stupid test.

Ok, did it, now how can I trade in my points in the local pub for pints??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,453 ✭✭✭Shenshen

    I got 2...

"Do you usually have a reason for the occasions when you drink heavily?" - Well, yes, I would have to have a reason to have a drink. Why would you drink when there's no occasion?

"Have any of your blood relatives ever had a problem with alcohol?" - And uncle of mine drank himself to death pretty much. Which is why I hardly ever drink. I like a glass of wine once a month when meeting friends, or sharing a pint with the husband once a week or so.

I was at a wedding recently and noticed that I'm getting tipsy on the second glass of wine, so I make sure not to have seconds.

If you answered “yes” to between 2 and 8 questions, you should consider arranging a personal meeting with a professional who has experience in the evaluation of alcohol problems. You should consider contacting the NCADD affiliate office nearest to you. A representative will be happy to assist you in the scheduling of a professional evaluation.
Got a 2, they would laugh me out of the place! I hope no one got paid to make that test.

"what makes you think you might be an alcoholic?"
"ehm, I sometimes drink alcohol, I guess?"

Got 10 but in fairness two of the questions I answered no to were do you drink extra drinks unknown to your friends and do you want to wait drinking longer than your friends. Sure we all drink until we are bananas and the extra drinks at the bar aren't very hidden when we are all having them!

The question about do you have a reason for the occasions you drink heavily is a very stupid question. I answered no and thought that would be the "wrong" answer as I'd go out on the beer for any excuse which you would think is worse than only getting drunk for "occasions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,151 ✭✭✭Ben D Bus

Although I think my problem is binge drinking, sometimes I find it hard to stop rather than craving a drink.

    7.

I need the help of a professional.

The way I look at it, I love beer, would be lost without a couple of sensible sessions per week, but I hate getting blotto and I control my intake very well. So I am happy enough with that.

So the NCADD can go and ****e.

I got six and was told see a professional in alchohol treatment? what? Here were my answers. I'd imagine the blackout drinking and having a drink first thing in the morning and having the shakes would be a lot more worrying than the ones I got.

    2. Can you handle more alcohol now than when you first started to drink
Obviously, when I was 17 or 18 was a long time ago

    11. Do you usually have a reason for the occasions when you drink heavily?
Weddings? "heavily" is a broad term as well

    12. When you’re sober, do you sometimes regret things you did or said while drinking?
No I totally meant it when I suggested we fly to Asia and open a bar

    21. Have you recently noticed that you can’t drink as much as you used to?
Can't and don't, my nights of going out every weekend are long behind me

    25. Do you ever feel depressed or anxious before, during or after periods of heavy drinking?
That's called a hangover you idiots

    26. Have any of your blood relatives ever had a problem with alcohol?
Does an uncle we don't talk to anymore count?
