As a user of the maynooth rail line, I have to credit him for his efforts to convince Irish rail to develop it when it was their plan to destroy maybe even close it.

    Rest in peace.

Albert Reynolds came across as a straight talking politician and was a huge contributor to the peace process,he stood very firm even when he was getting huge abuse from opposition tds and the irish independent re the john Hume and Gerry Adams talks.he seemed one of the good ones.

Really? I use that service all the time - I'd no idea!
I liked him: practical, pragmatic, and never forgot where he was from.
    RIP Albert Reynolds.

RIP. He laid the foundation for the peace process but the subsequent bumbling of John Bruton which lead to a breakdown in the process and then the inability of Bertie Ahern to share credit with others mean Reynolds' work is often forgotten or overlooked.

never liked the guy much. Even our pets wouldn't eat his dog food.

I will say, he always seemed better than most other fianna fail.

What I liked about albert was that he was a self made man and a very successful one at that.

Albert Reynolds got things done: economy was beginning the start of the boom under his leadership, he did great work for peace and his manner was one that was very practical which made things happen.

I really liked him, met him once, we need more like him now.

Happy the peacemakers, they shall be called sons of God.

Not usually one for jumping on the mawkish Internet RIP bandwagon but this news has saddened me.

A thoroughly nice man, a grafter, and a good taoiseach. He did a lot of good for our own country and of course being a driving force in ensuring the peace process got on the right tracks and stayed on it.

There's a lot to be said for him kicking the haughy cronies out the door too, just a shame Bertie wasn't one of them.

What a shame this man did not have longer as Taoiseach. RIP

Same here, although our musical tastes differ as well. He and John Major did the real heavy lifting on Northern Ireland. Shame to see two chancers like Bertie and Blair take much of the credit.

It should be mandatory that a person should run a business before they run a country

Loath FF but he got things done

    Agreed.
He cut his teeth in the entertainment game, showbands etc....not just dogfood like many keep referring to.

The former taoiseach has died aged 81.
In my view his work for peace in northern Ireland was his greatest achievement.

I find nauseating, the tributes being paid to him by politicians who willfully humiliated him in his efforts to secure the FF nomination for the 1997 presidential election.

I don't really know whether he was a nice man or not. I've heard conflicting stories.

But we shouldn't care much about "nice" in a leader.

    He was a decent Taoiseach

    RIP

He can step into his proper role in history now. His role (and that of John Major) has been glossed over by a lot of men in cheap suits in a rush to claim credit for the Peace Process.

    RIP Albert.

...and thanks for the Boris Yeltsin is Unwell moment at Shannon.

His brother Jim started and was the driving force at the ballrooms and showbands at the start.

Took a lot of risks on the peace process that would have made him look very bad if they didn't work out and we all benifited from the gambles he took.

No time for FF but you couldn't imagine Bruton of ever taking the first steps Albert did, probably the reverse of it.

His autobiography is well worth a read.

tks, had a look at that on google/amazon yesterday and read other articles about him and his family yesterday, feel a bit spooked now that he has passed away. he came across a really sincere guy and got things done. forgot to mention the brilliant way he sorted out the p&t mess, a disgrace the way he was shafted over the ff presidential nomination in 97
