2 slipped discs - Who to see to help manage them?

My Dad has been living with 2 slipped discs in his back for around 15+ years. At the time of the diagnoses he was told that nothing could be done for him apart from surgery (which couldn't guarantee success) and he's still of the opinion that nothing can be done.

Over the years his back has detoriated and it's difficult for him to get out of the chair when he comes home from his physicaly demanding job.

I'm looking for somebody who specialises in dealing with slipped discs to try and help my Dad. I'd imagine that over the years there would of been some advances in helping people deal with this problem and make it more manageable.

Can anybody help / recommend or point me in the direction of somebody reputable?

    Thanks in advance. :)

I'd highly recommend the Physio Aidan Woods from http://www.pearsestreetphysio.com/.

I don't know if he specialises in dealing with slipped discs but I do know that he is a fantastic physio. I had a bulging disc in my neck and he diagnosed and treated it promptly and I was back lifting in no time. Been to him a good bit over the years and somehow he has always managed to fix me up!

There have actually been some high profile advances in understanding what goes on in a slipped disk and how to treat it, but I think this is still fairly experimental, so that might not be much use to you.

When is the last time he saw a physiotherapist? If his condition has deteriorated significantly, it might be worth seeing one again. Also, it might be time to talk to a doctor about the surgical option or pain management.

    Thanks for that. Much appreciated.

At the very least 10 years or more. My Dad is what I would describe as old school. He was told that's the way his back was and there's nothing that can be done so he just gets on with. No complaining or moaning about it, he just knuckles down and gets on with it.

I'm going to get in touch with the physio mentioned above and see if I can make an appointment but if anybody else has any other input it would be much appreciated.

Thanks to both of you for the reply.

Margaret Hanlon in city physio lucan is the best back physio in the country. She specialises in backs. Aiden woods is also very good but if it was my bank id go to Margaret. I'm a physio by the way. let us know how your dad gets on!

    Where are you based?
I would recommend a physio in Athlone. He doesn't advertise and only takes referrals.
    I can pm his details

It depends. First time I went there I got an appointment for later that week.

I didn't ask for him specifically but maybe as it was my first time there, he saw me. I'm not sure.

But any of his team are good to be honest.

Good to hear, pain in the hoop with this shoulder issue. Been to another physio, no real improvement. Rolling out my back, chest and neck area daily still no difference so be worth giving aidan a go.

Do you no if he is there weekends

I used have 6.30am sessions and I know I was in until 8.30pm once.
