HUD is 9.99 extra isn't it. I paid 19.99 for europe and russia and found sygic fantastic in france, google maps suggested some pretty stupid routes and drops out of navigation a lot on multiple devices here for no apparent reason. I will say though that at one point google maps did a sudden reroute and when we drove up the slip road we could see a tailback stretching miles upon miles ahead so their WAZE traffic system obviously works. Google maps pois were sometimes better.

Google maps can be used in offline mode (i.e. with no data connection) but unfortunately this can't be done for every country.
For example, it's not possible to download Spain map data for Google offline use.
Most countries are supported though and you can see a list at answer 2650347 in Google support or just search for "Google maps offline country list"

How much data would this whole map programme take up can someone tell me?

You can load countries individually Ireland is 50Mb uk 339, France 574, Germany 593, Netherlands 97 etc. App itself takes about 100 mb with app plus language and voice files

You can't do a new search or navigation on offline maps when your offline though so its like a paper map.
If you really can't part with cash there are some cheap/free options based on open street map but a rubbish satnav will waste you the price of sygic on fuel in no time.

Don't you have to pay for all map updates though making bit expensive.

Google maps is shiiiiiiiiiite in a lot of places, especially in countries where it cannot tell the difference between a main road and some crappy dirt track :)

You can use it in offline mode but if you deviate from your route you're up the creek so it's not a lot of use for navigation.

Not sure on that one, I survive fine on the free OpenStreetmap maps, never saw the need to buy

or alternatively buy any Nokia smartphone and get full offline maps for any country free, bonus you get a fantastic camera/media player/phone to boot.

I use my Nokia Pureview 808 as my full-time Phone/camera/sat-nav/Media player(fm transmitter) and much more.

Alternatively again. Google maps in any area can be downloaded to your phone and used offline anywhere in the world without a data connection .

But its also useless for finding points of interest without a data connection.

NavFree is a free GPS program, download the maps for the country you want and hey presto, no roaming charges... it just got me all around Italy and Belgium this summer..

see for above link for details,

nokia have been doing offline maps for over 8 years and are experts, the other phone manufacturers are all playing catch up in that department.
Did I mention wireless charging with NFC car app integration,

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nokia-CR-201-Wireless-Charging-In-Car-Black/dp/B00GP20Q42/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1408017064&sr=8-3&keywords=nokia+car+cradle

not to mention you get a camera that beats most cannon/nikon stand alone cameras!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8g7wct1hTRo

why people would consider buying an i-phone/android is beyond me.

Have you actually tried this before recommending it, its NOT a replacement for a sat nav/navigation app. Without an internet connection all you can do is pan and zoom the map , you can't search, can't navigate, each map is a 10 mile radius so you'd need about 60 to cover ireland. If you want to update the offline maps you'd have to do it manually every 30 days. Its just like a paper map with NO index and most POIs missing.

Sygic probably saved me enough in diesel to pay for itself in a single holiday.

Apps, apps, apps, apps. I agree nokia maps are great I kept my old 5320 until this year just as a satnav until I bought sygic. A windows phone would be useless to me as most of the apps I use daily at home and work aren't available.

I did use it with great success last year in Paris and all its regions. A Lot further a field than 10 miles. Thats why I recommend it. When walking around it pinpointed where I was and I had saved places like our hotel and points of interest beforehand.

I used a proper Garmin satnav for driving as phones are a bit fiddly for using fulltime as a driving aid.

All im saying is its free. And very useful . Im not trying to say your app is better than google. Its simply an alternative mapping system.
You sound like a salesman for Sygic!

Apps can be downloaded at any time, innovative, original technology can't!

That's a great deal. I went with CoPilot two years ago as Sygic was too dear, I don't have a Nokia, and I don't want to be downloading Google maps. I always highly recommend CoPilot, it has never left me down, used it here and in France, but at this price I'd go with Sygic.

My advice pick yourself up a cheap nokia 520/530 etc. and use it as a satnav/media player and browser (when Wi-Fi available), doubles as a backup phone if you lose your main phone. Nokia HERE Maps works just aswell when you are on foot as well as in the car.

    Get one cheap here €35!!
    http://www.adverts.ie/nokia/nokia-lumia-520/6174538

The free downloaded maps come with Accomdation/Places of interest/Eating out/ Police Station/ATMs (the list goes on) pre-loaded in the map files, I have used my 808 on my last two holidays and its makes all my other electronic devices redundant.

ok, you appear to have misread my statement and failed to check facts before commenting (i-phone user no doubt),I'll spell it out:
    Buy spare Nokia 520:
    - Do not insert sim card.
    - Power on and have full use of the phones features including:
    - Free Sat-Nav (Here Maps) see previous posts for details.
    - Media Playback
    - Browser if Wi-Fi Available (this only applies to use the browser not the sat-nav ok?.

= You now have a fully functioning sat-nav/media player for your car which can double as a back up phone, potentially if purchasing a new phone go for a Nokia 930 or 1020 and benefit from all the innovative technology packed into them and not have to purchase third party software and updates.

FWIW, I've been using OSMAND (Open Street Maps for Android - http://osmand.net/) on my smartphone for ?2 years now. I've no idea whether it's as good as the OP, but it's free to install, and you can download up to 10 offline maps. There seem to be maps available for most countries (and even detailed contour maps of some countries, useful for cycling / walking)

The interface is a bit clunky but it has some nice navigation features.

And Open Street Maps is a cool thing, right? ;)

Points of Interest is best part of it. It sent me wrong before, as did Navfree and Google and Garmin.

I seriously considering buying the sygic app after downloading trial.

It says life timetime licence (is this devise specific or can u download again, because if u lose your phone?)

also is there a difference in packages? you can get Europe for 24.99, western Europe for 27.99 but France costs 19.99. surely if u buy Europe france would be in it. or am I missing something? any advise please. Have u purchased app?

France is included. Europe map normally costs 50 euro. You get a product code from sygic to enter so if you lose your phone its no prob.

Nav free worked well for me in UK, with OSM maps, only once did it send me a way I found a bit peculiar. Tom Tom maps are available to buy for 20 euro for whole of Europe if you want to upgrade.
