Allocated seating Ryanair, why queue?

So currently waiting to get on a Ryanair flight, sitting down reading Boards on free wifi. Looking around there are 18 people sitting waiting for boarding and well over 120 I'd say queuing! Why would you queue now when you have an allocated seat? It's baffling, they've even announced it's allocated seating.

It's possible that they want to guarantee that there will be room for their hand luggage in the cabin. It's more likely that it's a mixture of idiots and sheep.

I waited to board on Sunday but couldn't find a place for my soft cabin luggage near my seat. I had to put the bag further up the cabin and as a result was one of the last people to get off the plane and last to go through Customs.
It'll be going in front of my feet in my seat in future.
Before the rule changes for boarding I used to be last on sitting in one of the rearmost seats with the bag behind the last row of seats.
those solid suitcases really do eat up space in the lockers.

Yeah we travelled with Ryanair last week and we queued up because we wanted to make sure we kept our hand luggage with us as it had some valuable items inside and didn't want to risk it getting tossed around down under the plane, we were told only the first 90 pieces of luggage could come on board everything else would go under with the rest of the checked in luggage

Yeah it could be for the baggage space, I'm not too worried if my bag goes in the hold or that.

I recently got a smaller suitcase for this reason.
Still fits everything I need and don't have to worry about trying to find somewhere in an overhead locker for it.

space was tight flying out but I could squish my bag in but just no space at all on the way back. A smaller bag wouldn't have helped.

OP, I think you may be confused. Personally, I feel that Ryanair don't offer allocated seating, its more of a scramble to get the best seats. That's just my opinion though.

they do now but most people still seem unaware of this and decide to queue and sit in whatever seat they want ! they then have to be moved ..../

That's your opinion on the topic. My personal opinion is that they don't actually offer this service on all Ryanair flights, only the "priority boarding" people can reserve particular seats.

I don't understand ? every Ryanair flight now makes you check in online and your boarding pass contains your seat number ?

All the seating is now assigned. But some people cannot seem to fathom the concept or seem unable to read their boarding pass to see that it has a seat number on it.

They also announced twice to the big queue of people queuing that all seats are allocated.

I flew out of Luton in May and there was a long queue when we arrived at the gate. The plane hadn't even arrived yet so we sat down. They counted the bags in the queue and sorted out any over the 90 allowed and by the time we joined the queue to board that was all finished and we got our bags on no problem. We found space for them on board pretty easily too.

this is what I was saying too......I've travelled 3 times with Ryan air since it was brought in. the amount of people who have had to be told to move is incomprehensible YOUR SEAT NUMBET IS ON THAT BIT OF PAPER IN YOUR HAND!!!! or on your phone/tablet

I normally buy an exit seat, so get priority boarding, but if I didn't there are two reasons I'd queue.

1: If there are no seats in the waiting area, why not stand in a queue instead of stand somewhere not in the queue? Personally, if there are no seats left, I'd sit on my rollerbag in the queue rather than sit on my rollerbag somewhere on the concourse

2: I've been separated from my bag before, when I was last on the plane. It is an absolute pain in the ***. On an easyjet flight recently, everyone beyond X place in the queue had their bags taken off them to get checked in. meaning a long wait at the other side.

Why would you not queue? It makes life easier. I don't get why people stand in a queue. Why not sit!? IMO, the only people who moan about the 'queuers' are the people who get annoyed about the fact that they weren't early enough to get in the queue.

That is no longer the case and has not been for a while.

The reason for the queue is that, since the introduction of the free second bag, the first 90 passengers are guaranteed to get their hand luggage on board allowing for an easy escape at the other end. If you don't queue you have to get your bags separately after the flight.

Personally I wish they'd get strict on hand luggage allowances again. It is geting back to the stage where people are really taking the pi$$ and clogging up the cabin with all their crap.

That's incorrect, only bags that are checked in have to be collected separately after the flight. Every passenger can bring on a bag. Where do you get your information from?

Due to cabin space limitations only 90 large cabin bags (55 x 40 x 20 cms) can be carried in the cabin, any remainder will be carried free of charge in the aircraft hold.

What confuses me is why some people still pay for Priority Boarding??? Mr. O'Leary probably can't believe his luck that some people are still paying for it!!

Passenger A gets Seat 1
Passenger B gets Seat 2
Passenger C gets Seat 3
etc

Well I usually just sit until the queue is gone but on my last flight I did think 'Crap, they're gonna stick my bag in the hold'. It's a soft bag with breakables in it so I didn't fancy the crew tossing it about and then waiting all day to get it again on the other end.

It's the same with full fare airlines who have always had allocated seating. Mad queues to get onto the plane. I'm usually relaxing at the the gate with a beer and among the last one to go on.

Yep, current system is if you want to pick your seat in advance, you pay extra. If you want a randomly selected seat at online check in (within 14days of flight), you are asssigned one by the system.

You are either a perfect example of the problem, or a surprisingly successful troll. (Dammit, I hate getting sucked in by these things)

My cabin baggage always fits under the seat in front of me so I wait and watch the queue frenzy.
Of course for most Ryanair flights, the first queue is just to be first to queue again further down, which is even more amusing, especially when you consider some have paid extra to be first in the first queue.

When i flew back from crete a couple of months ago lots of passengers had yellow stickers put on their hand luggage after they checked in. These passengers had to put their bags into the hold - although a few were allowed in the cabin. I assumed they issued these once the first 90 passengers had shown up on their system as checked in online or at the airport ?

From reading elsewhere online different airports seem to apply different systems - some just walk down the queue at the boarding gate looking for "volunteers" or any large cases and yellow tag them. There was a lot of queueing on both legs of my journey, and one couple in Dublin managed to hold up half the plane by boarding from the front, despite the fact they were seated beside me and my ticket clearly stated to board from the rear! They finally got seated and then moaned for about an hour about how bad the allocated seating system was lol

Priority boarding is included in the premium pre booked seats ie the first 5 rows and possibly the exit rows

When we flew back from Tenerife last month, the staff asked each person as they checked the boarding pass if they wanted to put any of their hand luggage in the storage free of charge so we put our small suitcase in and kept the backpack which would fit at our feet anyway. So handy!

That's how they make their money, if people didn't care where they sat they would just go with Ryanair's random allocation (no need to point out it's not actually "random"), otherwise they pay to sit beside their 3 year old or life partner or whatever...

It's not order of ticketing, it's order of boarding. The first people onto the plane get first dibs on cabin space. There are still inconsiderate people who bring their carry-on + carry-on sized "handbag" and put both in the overhead bin (happens lots on other airlines, don't know if Ryanair lets them get away with this as well). Then anyone with carry-on that doesn't fit under the seat in front when the bins are full have their bags checked and have to be collected off the carousel.
On a recent flight my husband had his luggage taken to be checked in, but as it turned out there were 4 free spaces near the back where we were sitting. That was even more annoying.

It is incredibly irritating. But the cabin crew stop people doing that it if they see them, and tell the passenger to take their luggage to where they are sitting. Is supposedly to aid identification if there is a crash.

haven't seen it myself but someone on boards boasted about it before on a thread, saying it was a great idea and that it meant they didn't have to carry the bag back or risk running out of space near their seat. There are words for that kind of person

I wouldn't call that one a fact, not every hand luggage bag after the first 90 are put into the hold. Only the ones that are too large to go under the seat in front of you. The bag I travel with, always fits there and I'm usually one of the last to get on the plane.

They don't always let the first 90 people go on with both bags and then only start telling the 91st person onwards to check their bag(s). I've seen them start at the top of the boarding queue & see how many bags are in each party of travelers. That sounds incredibly fair. Good for Ryanair.

Quick question, I've paid the seat allocation for a flight I'm taking next week, do people follow the seat allocation? Or will I have to ask people to move? I haven't flown with them since January, so I just missed these new rules!

Yes they follow seat allocation.

If they are in your seat ask them to move, if they refuse then get the air hostess to move them for you.
