So I got my insurance renewal today ..........

So I got my insurance renewal today from 123.ie. Been with them a few years now, but last year I got myself a more powerful car and insurance companies hate to insure this car in particular for some reason and it can be hard to even get quotes.

I was really happy with the quote I got last year of €625 and I was expecting to pay more this year but they have gone and quoted me €1,160. !!!!! I have a 6 year no claims bonus and there is a small claim for theft but that was on the policy last year also and they dont load your policy for theft under a certain amount. I have no points on my licence although that might be about to change after being in a huff and going a teensy tiny little bit too fast past a go safe van on the N7 :D

So has any one else had a huge increase in their insurance this year? I'm not the best at maths but isnt that a 90% increase ?. When I got home I rang them and the girl just said insurance has gone up and have I looked for a quote elsewhere? Ive just taken her advice and did just that and ive been quoted €801.

Good God, what kind of car are you driving at all to get a quote like that? Shop around. I did and it halved my premium. Insurance has been going up steadily for the past number of years anyway. The more years NCB I get the higher the premium..go figure

Its only an ep3 civic, I know people who insure much faster cars bmw's, audi's for less. Insurance companies hate anything with a type r badge. 123 were the cheapest by far last year! I dont get how they can put your premium up over 90% for no reason !

I was insured on a Focus ST with them for 2 years between 550-600e fully comp all extras

This year renewal came up on my S60 at 1049, i dropped them like a hot brick and switched to fbd.

    Just play the system.

Also 123 are a pain in the arse to get your pre renewal no claims cert off so watch that and make sure you get it before you switch

I was with 123 for the last few years but they went up nearly 150 squid so I went with AA this time.

(PS I'd say that type R can shift a bit OP?)

People should be shopping around every year for the best cover at the best price and not just accept the renewal price because it was no higher than last time. Insurance companies very rarely reward loyalty. Some insurance companies in fact will issue silly renewal prices in the hope people are not smart enough to shop around or are too lazy to do so.

Its a fun car to drive alright...its not deserving of the silly insurance premiums though.

I presume the folks who're experiencing these hikes had policies with RSA for the last few years, I did with a different broker. The were undercutting the market but weren't holding sufficient reserves. It was good while it lasted.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 91 ✭✭southernstar

Had exactly the same situation - paid 400 last year with RSA/ Tesco, upgraded recently to a better car (same size engine though) and they quoted me 800 this year.

I got quotes from 4 or 5 sites lowest on these was 4hundred-odd. One of them just called me and I now have a quote for 395 for fully comp with all the extras.

Definitely do a lot of shopping around.

Ah so is that why the price is gone up so much??

Try Aaran in Harold's Cross. €657 for me on STi Type UK Impreza.
    Very competitive at the moment.

Same; 690 on the C5 last year and then up to 950. Dropped 123 in favour of Liberty. They cited a number of spurious claims which was pushing up renewals this year.

    http://www.irishtimes.com/business/sectors/financial-services/rsa-insurance-sacks-two-irish-executives-after-inquiry-1.1649351

Worth noting, they suffered a lot of losses here, wouldn't be surprised if they're trying to leave the Irish market

Liberty wont quote me as I had a small claim for theft two years ago!

Mine went from 840 to 1300, then I told them I moved over northside of Dublin and they wanted 1800. I got 2 penalty points but that only a change from 33% discount to 17%. 8 years with them and one claim 6 years ago.

Shopped around and got quotes of 2000 from some insurers.

Ended up with 530 from the AA if I join for 79 for slightly better coverage with Axa who themselves were 1200+

All for a humble 140hp golf.

Had the same here with 123, 600 last year, renewal came in at 850 with no changes - went on their own website and got quoted around 500 so rang them and they said they'd match it (their own quote!)

    Go figure

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 402 ✭✭drdidlittle

Left 123 last month after being with them for the last number of years. €445 last year and were looking for €550. Changed car since, newer but smaller engine size. Got it from Zurich for €450. Pays to shop around.

Just tried that and the site would'nt even quote me, they must be targeting the market more to remove certain types of cars / risks from their books!
That was a sneaky move though and I take my hat off to you sir ! well done haha

With 123 also 470 last year wanted around 600 I think this year got them back down to around 520 and stayed with them. Still around 100 euro cheaper than the next best and 100's cheaper than most. Car is a mk5 Golf GTI.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,401 ✭✭✭Nonoperational

€390 here for a Golf GTi 200bhp fully comp with 123.ie. Was a nice pleasant surprise.

    Similar story for me.

Shop around and ring those on your shortlist and haggle goodo. 5 mins talking to a rep saved me a nice bit

Look at you all with your golf gti's and your cheap insurance!!!!! . I just don't get it, a golf gti and a type r are the same class of car similar power etc and yet the insurance is so much more expensive !

It's not fair!!! But on a side note I wouldn't mind some of what those underwriters must be smoking in 123 !!!

Got mine renewed there with avia . 280 Euro fully comp driving a 2l accord type s

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,360 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Insurance companies see the Civic TR differently to the Golf GTi, in their eyes and they probably have data to back it up, the profile of driver attracted to the Civic is a higher risk than that of the GTi.

The Civic TR is alot more popular with younger people than the GTi. It is also probably more prone to theft especially JDM imports with less security. All adds up to a higher risk for insurance companies and unfortunately insurance companies tend to tarnish everyone with the same brush.

That's a really good price for that car, the type s would be a less powerful car though. Once they hear the "r" they completely loose the run of themselves .

When axa heard type s they quoted 1490 . Told them no thanks and went to avia. Axa had a high rating on it

Also add a woman if you can. Even at 29 its saving me about 50 quid a year by naming my mother.

The recent misadventures of the Irish operations of RSA (incl 123.ie) will cost the parent group £200m. This money needs to be recouped and the first port of call is obviously Irish customers renewing their policies.

Been using quoteme.ie for last two years , cheapest iv found & the other half rang all round her yesterday for her Nissan leaf ( funny when they ask about engine size). Last call to quoteme.ie And they beat all others with there first quote. Aviva she's with now from them, even though she rang them earlier & got much higher price!!
    Its all a game really

Over25.ie. Its4women.ie. presume they have other names too. Policy with AIG. By far the cheapest this year. Seems AIG are chasing market share.

I used over25.ie to get a quote. A few days later I got an email from them with a €30 off code that brought my fully comp with step back on a 1.8 petrol to under €300. With windscreen cover and a few other bits.

Axa never come in with a decent quote for me either. Ive a friend with them for nearly 20 years and swears by them. I recently had one of their drivers reverse into my parked car (I wasn't in it at the time) with witnesses present. To say I had a hard time getting compensation from them even with independent witnesses would be an understatement. The experience was woeful I wouldn't touch them after that !

I would be a lot older than the usual civic type r driver! I bought a uk type r because it is a lot easier and cheaper to get insurance on it than a JDM EP3 (which is a more powerful car and has the LSD)

My car has the factory fitted immobiliser unlike older honda's and the very day I got it it was fitted with a Clifford G5 alarm so you cant even get very far in the car with the keys! Of course its possible to get the code for the car if you extract from the owner at knife point but who would bother for a crappy Honda civic!? It could be loaded on a truck and driven away but my car would be very hard to rob because it has a top of the range alarm and immobiliser even with the keys you cant get far so most car thieves don't even bother once they see the big blue light inside it even alerts you when someone is standing outside it looking into it! I think if people are willing to invest in decent alarms like this insurance companies should take that into account

Old lad got a renewal letter from AXA a few weeks back, 672 quid(he's driving 45 years, no claims in well over 10 years). He blew a fecking gasket!

Phoned them up and hung up with a quote of 402. Fully comp, BMW 525i

Apparently the renewal quote was calculated by computer. God knows how the computer comes up with that number.

I got a similar reduction on my Punto when it was renewal time for me.

Mine went up too, with no changes to policy or vehicle.

Think was 330 last year and was 480 this year, 318i and 123.ie, when I rang too they said the insurance has gone up everywhere hence the increase.

I did ring around a few too but this was still cheapest I got, even with axa who I have a second classic car with was nearly 700 or so.

I nearly died too was expecting it to the the same if not less :(

Youd think that, wouldnt you? I spent nearly €800 on a Clifford system for my Integra and my insurer didnt want to know. Its nonsense; they fleece you for driving a car that is supposedly high risk because of low security, but when you go to great expense to protect the car they dont take that into account.

Try Liberty for insurance btw. They were far and away the cheapest for my Type R both last year and this year. They seem to be only interested though if you are over 30. The only other company giving me reasonable quotes this year were Kennco; you will have to go through some brokers (I think First Ireland were one of the ones who quoted me).
