Personally loved the crap outta the homeworld series and i'm eagerly waiting this titles launch, but I haven't seen a release date or any real info on it so far.

what is this, a space sim? sorry for the ignorance

Ahh, they've renamed it to "Homeworld" and made it a prologue to the homeworld games, nice!

Looking forward to HW/HW2's remastered editions later this year, and H:SB has the potential to be as awesome as it's predecessors

It's an RTS, the plot is basically that these giant spaceship wrecks are out in the desert of your homeworld. Your job as a shipbreaker company or something is to compete with other shipbreakers for all the resources, booty, monies or what have you.

But basically, the old homeworld games were among the best RTS games ever made, the plot, graphics, audio and gameplay were a perfect blend and its a seriously good experience for any rts player.

So the old band got back together after so many years to make shipbreakers, but now they got the license to use the Homeworld Brand and backing from Gearbox to produce the game. But that's all i know, and that was almost a year ago now.

The start of this video would be the premise for shipbreakers

    Best. Game. Ever!!

Homeworld was a marvel for me. I remember seeing the original trailer for it, and being completely blown away. And then i got to play it, and loved it (though i did get stuck on lvl4 for bloody ages). So many brilliant moment, and i'm looking forward to seeing how the remasters turn out. Any word on if they got the license for Cataclysm?

This looks good, and i'll buy anything tied to the Homeworld franchise. I'd prefer Homeworld 3 however.

it gets me too, but that story NEEDS to be retold, again and again, lest we forget :)

I saw the trailer for this over a year ago. Thought it had been postponed or abandoned. Glad to see it hasn't been the trailer really caught my eye. Hope its as good as it looks.

Doesn't seem like there's been much movement on this since Gearbox bought the IP.

    Hopefully they're still motoring along.

Randy Pitchford (Gearbox head honcho) occasionally talks about it on his Twitters, I'd just imagine that they're trying to avoid overhyping.

Probably a wise choice after Colonial Marines and Duke Nukem Forever.

And the remakes are grabbing most of the limelight as well, which should help.

I wonder what the market is like at the moment for RTS'. Will they really get the buy in from people other than hardcore Homeworld fans?

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 28,633 Mod ✭✭✭✭Shiminay

It's not an amazing RTS market out there. Company of Heroes 2 seems to have some frankly bizarre pricing that put me off the whole thing, but I know there are a good few playing it. SC2 is going reasonably well with the world of e-Sports. MOBA's seem to have stolen a lot of the RTS thunder as there's enough similarity for a lot of people.

Cannot wait for this, tempted to preorder the collectors edition just to get that mothership model to go with my Normandy from ME.

    Oh my.

I... I hate preordering, but... They couldn't manage to f*ck up a simple remaster. Could they?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,060 ✭✭✭✭Thargor

Ooops, should have said thats the remastered HW 1&2 preorder, nothing to do with Shipbreakers, cant wait for that aswell...

The remastered collection comes with the original versions anyway so worst case scenario you'll have just bought a second copy of one of the best strategy games ever. ;)

    $100!?

13" replica though. Handpainted quality. Even the base is a detailed piece of canon. AND it lights up in engine and construction bays via USB?

    Oh man decision time ahead

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,060 ✭✭✭✭Thargor

The base is my favorite bit, didnt know about the lights though, I think Ill go for it.

if only the remasters looked this good

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,775 ✭✭✭✭Gbear

After rooting around a bit, I found it suggested here that they're fiddling around with the engine they used for Homeworld 2 for the remastered games.

I don't know enough about game development to know whether that means it can't possibly look as good as the above, but I'd be surprised if a 12 year old engine would deliver the same end result as a sparkly new one.

I'd imainge Shipbreakers is using something completely different given that it's a different developer and it's an original game.

Yea, from what they've said it sounds like they'll just be making improvements to the HW2 renderer for the remasters. As you said, there's only so much that can be done with an engine that old without significantly rewriting large swaths of it.

As for Shipbreakers, as far as I'm aware it's being built with Unity.

Completely rebuilding the game in a new engine like that would be more of a remake than a remaster to be fair.

I wonder does it help that there isn't really a huge amount of animation?

It's not like with facial expressions or even people running around. It's mostly just rectangular things moving in straight lines.

Yes and no. You could argue that the lack of animation means there'll be greater focus on the fidelity of the textures and lighting systems so, if they're going to do it, they're going to need to do it properly or at least as best as they can within the confines of the engine. Whether that means rewriting the existing renderer or improving the one that's there remains to be seen though.

    Just announced.

    Looks Homeworld-ish.

Looks very promising alright. Bit of a mini-renaissance in old school gaming at the minute, the good kind, not the sh1tty platformer kind (although I did love Shovel Night).

OK, I'm gonna throw this one out here and brace for impact:

I've never played these Homeworld games... * grips his seat *

At this stage, I think I'm gonna wait for the remakes and play then cause I have way too many other things to play ATM, but seeing the way so many people talk about them here and on other parts of the tubes, it makes me realise that I've clearly missed out on something magical.

If you like strategy games you'll love the Homeworld series.

I just wish they were remastering Homeworld:Cataclysm. :(

I'd be surprised if the remastered version of the original doesn't grab you by the first few minutes. It really is a masterpiece that deserved to be remastered and not rebooted

    Meh?

It really seems like a step backwards. Obviously it is literally a step backwards timewise, but somehow a ground-based RTS is just so less exciting than space. Really I would just like if they did Homeworld 3, and did it better than 2.

Worth it though I think. If you like the genre/originals.

It's a good remaster from what I've played of it. They did nice things like clean up Homeworld 1's UI to make it more like Homeworld 2 and similar.

I have fond memories of playing Homeworld 1.
My old PC could just about support it without crashing every hour.

It was laggy as hell but I kept going back for more.
Nowadays I'd give up on an unstable game after a couple of tries.

They don't make em like they used to! :)

Definitely one of the best, and most moving episodes i've ever played. That music was absolutely perfect. Saving all the pods was tough, but definitely worth it to hear "500,000 people secure".

And I always loved the line after that mission..."The subject did not survive interrogation".

To ****in right he didn't
