    hi,

play off around 22-23 can go up and down fairly frequently currently using titleist dci 962's irons got them as a hand me down about 2 years ago, hit them okish most of time, now that i am playing more often i am wondering would i bet better of investing in some second hand irons that would be more typical of a game improver or are the titleist good enough to use as game improvers?

try a few lessons first, then worry about clubs. If you get your swing and setup right, and then get fitted for a club that suits you.

cheers have been getting lessons recently got some about a year ago as well

Unless I'm mixing up clubs, weren't the 962's during that wave of like hybrid blades. As in they had a blade sized face and head, but didn't have a blade back on them?

If they are the ones with the blade sized head, I guess the lazy answer would be you could get something a bit comfier and more forgiving. I think it's important to remember that while some irons will be called "improvers" it's not like they take you from point A - B and then become redundant.

I have irons that many would considering "improvement" irons maybe aimed at the higher handicapp, but I really liked the look, feel, comfort and performance from them. I'm sacrificing a few things like maybe spin, but I'll happily forgo that with the ball striking I'm getting.

I guess in reality in sort of depends if you have the budget to go buy new irons, and if you feel you could get a big benefit from a new set. Maybe trying out some demo irons is a good shout. Plenty of driving ranges will have demo sets, or maybe going out with someone who has a type of iron you fancy and giving them a lash.

OK, stick with it. I used ancient clubs for years and years. I'm talking stuff my Da used probably before I was born....jeez and maybe his Da before him!! These were so old the grooves were worn right down on them. Well if yours are anything like they were, then you will improve with a new set. I wouldn't get hung up on the brand etc. The big difference for me was just having something which could grab the ball, rather than the ball sliding straight off them. I went from 19 to 14 in about a year with no lessons, no practice and probably playing 30 or so games. Hell, my "new" clubs were actually second hand... just "new to me"

my taughts exactly don't care if there not brand new as long as there new to me, wouldn't have budget for brand new of any brand, is there in dublin or galway that does fitting on second hand clubs?

I would think your best bet might be driving ranges

Check out adverts as well, normally good deals going down there.

i doubt adverts would do fittings

The shafts in irons are pretty much the same the last 5/6 years PX KBS ect. so just go get fitted for 30 quid or ask the pro the next lesson you get then go look online for a second hand set with the same shafts.
Muzino have some super game inprovers that would be 3/4 years old now the MX series. Callaway X22's are another set that should be good value. Ping g10 i think.

Off 22 if you dont want to go for a fitting if you hit a 9 iron over 140 then think about stiff if less just get regular. As long as you are average height then 90% of off the shelf clubs should be fine.
It's not going to be a costly mistake if you buy second hand off Adverts as you will be able to sell them on again for similar money.

If you are hitting a 9 iron over 140 yards I'd join tour school.
a couple of years ago tiger was hitting his 9 142.

Not being smart now but thats a ridiculous statement, 9i is my 148ish club. Play with many young lads who'd carry a 9i 140 easily also.

And im not goin to any fookin tour school. You cant associate distance with skill level, if that was the case joe miller and the 400yard long drive boys would be rippin up the tour

I know we are stupid talking driver.

    but i hit a 48 140.

    Pw 150.

    Gi irons go miles.

But the 48 is an sm4

find it hard to believe most players hit 140+ with 9 iron, i only hit it around 130 mark, but then again i suppose with the new strong lofted clubs 140 may be possible since a new 9 iron loft is more like an old 8 iron

I play titleist 714 cb's. Traditional (old) lofts so 47 degree pw and 43 degree 9i. But yeah some of the gi clubs the pw is like 44-45

140 with a 9i would be fairly standard for someone with a 100 mph driver swing. My G25 9i carries 140 and my driver 230.

Wonder why tigers 125 mph swing performs so badly with a 9i.

Fair enough, I'm the only one not hitting my 9i over 140 "fookin" yards I guess.

You probably use a regular shafted driver with a swing speed of less than 100mph.

148 is my 9 iron i can hit it around 155 it i go after it but 148 is comfortable. You do have lots of guys that hit their driver hard and then play a soft 3/4 swing with their irons so not always stiff driver stiff iron shafts. but if you are hitting the 9 iron over 140 then you should probably look at stiff rather than regular.

I have the JPX 800 Pro irons for the last three years. Very happy with them. They don't look too 'clunky' at address, the top line of the iron is not too thick but not thin enough to be intimidating. Hope this helps.

Someone previously mentioned the MX range, these are very close to the JPX's, I see there are a few sets of the MX and JPX on adevrts.

You're not alone, I'd hit my 9i (43 degree) about 130 yards at best and average out at probably only 120 yards. I'm not exactly sparing it either so looks like something I need to work on to first to get my averages up near 130 before then trying to push on towards the 140 mark.

It's just a matter of what's printed on the club not being relevant. Woods' 9i has 45 degrees of loft where mine has 40.

anyone use the nike vr_s covert irons from 2013 hit a few of them recently and taught they were good extra length seemed to help me against some callaways and mizuno, unfortunately didn't have my own clubs with me to compare. Basically are ther any issues with these clubs with regards to general wear and tear.
