Hi all. I bloody love this stuff and usually throw back a litre following training. Problem is I'm moving to the UK and as far as I'm aware this isn't available there. Anyone know of any alternatives?

    from http://www.avonmore.ie/our-range/our-products-milk/avonmore-protein-milk
We’ve added 50% extra high quality whey and casein protein to Avonmore Protein Milk

so just add whey (and casein if you really want)

and it's only 17g more protein per litre comparing to http://www.avonmore.ie/our-range/our-products-milk/avonmore-1-light-milk
    what's the price difference?

That 17g is quite a lot though considering there's 50g in the whole carton.

Doesn't the whey combine with the casein anyway to slow the digestion of the whey to casein levels?

17g is not a lot when you're talking about a whole litre of milk. Your best bet is adding whey to your regular milk.

It's like one third of the protein content. That's a lot!

It's like one third of the protein content. That's a lot!

It's a moot point though, if you can't get it.

So just get some whey online on the likes of MyProtein, BulkPowders, TheProteinWorks etc

You're right, I'll have to go down the unflavoured whey route.

You can get 4 litres of low fat milk for €2.80 so thats €0.70 a litre

You can get 2.5kg of unflavoured whey on myprotein for €26.34, and you need 20g of this to raise the protein per litre of the milk to 50g. Which costs €0.21

So you can make your own "protein milk" for €0.91 / litre instead of €1.89

    Sums it up

Put a scoop or two in a shaker in the morning. Have a bottle of water with you if needs be. Leave it in your car or training bag.

Is it really that much hardship?

Compared to regular milk sure, it's a significant increase. But milk isn't really that high in protein to begin with. As a portion of your whole days intake, or in terms of added protein, 17g is not a lot.

Probably about 2/3 of a scoop of whey per litre. Thats tiny. I add 1 scoop to 250ml (4 scoops to a litre), that's 140g protein/litre.
It's a convient post workout drink when you're stuck, but I wouldn't include it as part if my planned regular intake.

It's certainly not worth the mark up. The pricing is crazy when you consider that they are one of the main suppliers of whey protein isolate to supplement companies.

Wow, I didn't think anyone would be really taken in my the 'connivence' of protein milk given that it's got f'all protein in it compared to a scoop of whey.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,894 ✭✭✭✭ted1

i gave it a go just out of interest, it makes my porridge taste different but also gives it a different texture. back to the usual stuff.

yeah but it's got some gaa playere on the carton so it must be good and the whey is no longer a prohibited substance in gaa

Who cares lads. It's his choice (and mine). Why are people's noses so out of joint? Value is a relative term that goes beyond the mere economics of the situation. It is a value proposition to me and I'll keep buying, I don't give a sh1t about the pictures on the front. You'd swear they are using predatory marketing or something. It's aimed at active people so they put a few sports stars on the front. Makes total sense to me.

Can't agree more. No one complains about people when they buy all sorts of Under Armour **** for their weekly 5km yog, or when middle age men do the MAMIL for their weekly spin with the boys! But put some GAA imagery on milk and all of a sudden the smart arses are out :pac:

No problem with suggestions of alternatives. I do have a problem with smart comments about people's choice to buy this product.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,818 ✭✭✭Inspector Coptoor

The "alternative" to protein milk in the uk would be just to drink more of regular milk to get the same amount if protein in.

To be "high" in protein, Avon, ore only need to make the protein milk 25% higher in protein than regular milk.

Regular milk comes in at 3.3g/100ml
"Protein" milk comes in at 5.1g/100ml as far as I know, about a 50% increase but it's still a very low amount of protein by percentage.

If you're drinking 1L of protein milk, drink 1.5L of normal milk and make sure you know how many extra calories are in it.

Or, has already been said, buy some unflavoured whey and add it in to regular milk.

Agreed. There's billions spent on supplements every year. Many of them spurious. Loads rave about Quest bars on here. There's only 20g protein in there, scoff. Like that's totally a rip. 2 quid for 2/3rds a scoop of whey.

It's not like Avonmore are the first company to jump on a bandwagon to boost sales.

Massive over reaction. If you like it drink it.

Glanbia (Avonmores parent company) don't just supply whey to supplement companies they own Optimum Nutrition and BSN.

Although they are trying to divest themselves of the liquid milk and dairy side of thinks to focus on Ingredients.

I actually meant alternative brands but that's what I will do. Protein milk is identical cals to low fat milk.

    Many thanks

The extra protein should mean its higher in cals. Not massively, maybe 70 cals/litre.

If you can't buy an alternative the closest option would added whey to low fat milk.

Or you could drink extra regular milk. But allow for the extra cals in the extra 500mls.

Also, check the labels on some of the flavoured milk. Sometimes they have added protein too. Mooji is 45g/litre

As far as I can see they are both 490 cals per 1 litre.

To use Avonmore as an example, whole (Fresh) milk has 64 kcals per 100 ml. 3.3 g of protein. 4.9g sugar

Low fat (light) has 43 kcals and 3.4g protein. 5.0g sugar.

I was just being a smart arse. If you can afford the tag along calories then milk is a great source of extra protein. I used to drink ~2 gallons a week at one stage.

But its a poor and expensive primary source of protein

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,699 ✭✭✭Brian

How about chocolate milk, OP? Tesco have a 2 x 750 ml deal for €2.50 this week. From memory it's 70 cal, 4.5g vs 50 cal, 5g of protein milk.

I know your post is mostly focusing on protein intake, but I'm a hard gainer and rely on milk a lot (mostly for calories and some protein) - out of interest, what do you think is a cheaper source of protein (and ideally, for me, calories)? Or are you just referring to taking scoops of whey?

I said milk is a bad primary source of protein. Its ideal for someone in your situation. But imagine your were on 1800 calories a day.

2 litres of milk would provide you with:

    1300 calories
    72g of fat
    94g carbs
    64g of protein

You now have 500 calories left for the day, you are starving and you've only put a small dent in your protein requirements for the day.

Even if you went with skim milk

    800 calories
    110g carbs
    80g protein

It has way too many tag along carbs. It is a bad source of protein for most people.

Now if you are bulking or somebody with a high TDEE. You have already put away 2500 calories of chicken, rice, frozen veg, eggs. you have hit your fibre for the day and you still need 1500 calories to finish out your day? Then milk is ideal, delicious, easy to drink a few pints of it and cheap.

Hope that cleared things up :)

Do not drink the aforementioned 2x750 ml of chocolate milk in one go.

    Man I feel unwell.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,639 ✭✭✭LightningBolt

There was a study done in Canada which found chocolate milk to be one of the most effective post-workout drinks/meals. No idea if the research was independent or paid by one of the dairy companies over there.
