Testing an Echo 100 Sonar

Bought an Garmin Echo 100 Sonar second hand today for our boat project-

Before we mount it permanently - we did a quick test (but without water).

we read the manual online (link).... watched the installation vids.

When we switch it on - we do get some feedback features shown on the large screen when we point to nearby objects - temperature looks accurate enough- but the Depth (top left) remains flashing at 4 feet and doesn't change.

Should these be possible to test without access to a deep body of water? Before going out with it would anyone know? The depth readout was the feature we wanted the most.

    looks exactly like this one

    thanks...

Sonar signals will only work in water not in air so you really need to be out on the boat, also when you are sticking it to the hull make sure there are no air bubbles in the silicone as they can affect the readings.
