In 20 years, i'll be dead. Not.two.fecks.do.I.give what happens in twenty years. I get it hard to be bothered about anything past the next three hours. And before you yap on about how much oil you're saving getting wet cycling to work, have a think on how much that plane that just took off from Dublin airport burns in an hour. You'd be a lifetime fuelling your car with what it burns in a single flight.

Guess you have no kids or family? You're happy to hand them down a failing world?

    well ok then.

I cant stop the plane flying, I can choose not to drive my car a short distance, for no reason, other than laziness.

    `

    So John Rambo,

Tell me do you cycle 160 km a day ???? If not then don't be telling me what I should or should not be doing !!!!

    So shih.

I wasn't telling you to do anything, it was a suggestion.... No, I wouldn't do a commute like that shih on a bike or a car, too much to do! Maybe an advanced driving course would suit you if you're getting that frustrated on the road?

Ah thanks for the concern

But I think the money would be better spent on you learning to read better , so you don't assume everything !!!;)

It's worth mentioning that there is a very good chance not driving your car a short distance and riding a bicycle is actually worse for the environment than just driving your car.

We've been through your bs already , most of us have thousands of km of cycling range already built up as excess fat .

Doubt that as pointed out, I'm not eating anymore by doing so. so not using any more fuel than I normally do.
Being thinner means I'm less prone to certain illnesses. It also means that's one less car on the road.

As someone else pointed out, there's a few thousand cyclists around dublin, if they all got i their car instead, the traffic would be even slower.

As much as you want to say cars use less . They're manufacturing/servicing and lifetime ..outweighs any cons of the bicycle.

All you're doing playing devil's advocate here, and anyone with sense can see how ridiculous it is.

As you know ( or should know ) in the COUNTRY ROAD there are area that tractors, buses can pull in, & myself if needs be

In the Galway CITY for me as a driver of a motor vehicle, tractors & buses to pull over would mean pulling up on a footpath which is illegal.

I do not think I can explain this any more clearly :D

What about bus lay-byes? Gateways? Side-streets? On-street parking bays?

Incidentally, in respect of time with your kids - why should your time with your kids be valued more than the person-on-the-bike's time with theirs? (Or the person on the bus, for that matter) why should they pull in and sacrifice time with their families just so you can have more with yours?

Because people on their leisure cycles are choosing not to spend time with their family at the time because they are out cycling ( I am not taking about cyclist that commute )
The bus drivers & tractors pull in because they know that there are 20 odd cars be-hide them & been considerate to other road users.

You're commuting so it's at a time people commute - so how do you know they are only out for a leisure cycle? And what about people out for a leisure drive? People not commuting (going shopping, picking kids up from school etc etc? Or tourists in hire cars? Should they all pull in for you?

    what about them ????

You said there was no places to pull into in Galway - I was just pointing out that in any urban area, including Galway, there are loads of spots where drivers (and cyclists) can pull over to let traffic get by.

Cyclists paying road tax haha. What a load of tosh.

Because people do not commute in packs in full cycle gear without any back pack etc , very easy to spot,

If I saw someone with a child on a bike on those road, I would quickly pull in & call the guards as the roads are narrow, with lots of bends, NOT a PLACE TO BRING KIDS OUT ON BIKE

Everybody should do at least 30min of exercise time, 3 times a week, maybe the kid is afterschool club or the likes..and it's the only time they can get out for the exercise.

Your commute regardless of reason, is not more important than there's.

Also, most cyclists will pull out of the way, given the chance, half the time, people expect us to pull out by squashing into a bush.

Galway city center I can assure you have no where to pull in, ( having leave here for over 30 years i know this )

Yes urban area have them but then in urban area there is not traffic build up so why would anyone be pulling in ????

Could be on the way to / from the childminders?

So, you still haven't answered my original question - should road users NOT commuting yield to those who are? My experience of Galway would suggest lost/confused tourists in hire cars or camper vans - along with tour buses - are a greater menace than cyclists.

......and I'd suggest leaving parenting of children to parents. Report your concerns by all means, but it's a bit rich to suggest that someone you've probably never met has not got their child's interests forts and foremost in their consideration.

However, you could be concious and make sure there's space on your inside for the cyclist to pass.

I can't say for galway, but in Limerick, there's often plenty of space for a car & cyclist beside eachother, yet, the amount of drivers who pull so far left your only way to pass is foot path or the right...it's maddening.
It doesn't take much effort to look at your mirrors and think "can a cyclist pass? yes= good, no, I'll pull out to the right a little more"

I have pointed out the road I am talking about GALWAY - CLIDFEN ROAD, the title of the tread does not indicate we are talking about people exercising. I bring my kids out exercising every day without having to cycle on a very dangerous road.

I am at a lost as to what point you are trying to make with your comments.

I am talking about a very long narrow bendy road GALWAY TO CLIFTEN RD,

I am very happy for Limerick but I am not talking about limerick & you are making assumptions about Galway.

So just suck it up and slow down on that bendy road,
Once it's straight you can use the correct overtaking procedures and be on your way. :)

Galway - Clidfen is not a dangerous road. I've cycled it a few times.

Plus, according to the RSA database there's only been once collision (minor) in seven years (in Moycullen)......

tell me where as you seem to know Galway city center better than I,

Bothermore for a start......lots of of street parking there and easy to pull over into an unoccupied bay if you want to.

The bus bays on the NW corner of Eyre Square......

    Mill street.....

    They're just from memory......

Yes we all know that here that cyclist have every right to cycle on the road,
I am not disputing this but your going on about exercising !!! How does that relate back to my post

I am talking about a dangers road , by all means chat about what you wish but make scenes when your doing so if your going to attack what I am saying

That only matters for the short term.

If you have excess energy stored as fat, and are in a state of equilibrium (eating as many calories as you burn), introducing cycling will NECESSARILY cause you to burn more calories.

Initially, yes, you could burn fat you had already stored.

That doesn't mean it's magically 'free energy'. It's energy you already stored. Once stored energy sources are gone, you need new energy. The only source of energy people have is food. Doing more exercise *requires* more energy.

It doesn't matter how you slice it - if you move, it takes energy. Cycling takes energy. People get energy from food. Food has an environmental impact. It's not free.

That's like me saying, 'Well, I ALREADY had a full tank of petrol, so my trip to the mountains didn't use up any fuel'.

If there is any city in Ireland more ideally suited to cycling and in greater need of more people getting out of their cars and on to bikes, then Galway must be it......

......I'm only surprised more energy isn't put into getting people to take up cycling there.

You do know that the more you talk, the more silly it gets. Yes, some people do commute in full cycle gear without any back pack - including me. I drive to work one day ever 2 weeks or so and leave a pile of clothes in work, so I don't need a back pack. I don't think I'm the only person in the country to do this.

But it is interesting to watch you digging deeper and deeper into the big hole of assumption that YOUR time and YOUR work and YOUR commute is somehow much more important than everone else's.
what about them ???? Have you driven around Galway city ??? Because if you have you would notices that there are none of them as I have explain before, read my other post before you assume you know what I am talking about

Do you live in some kind of parallel universe? You really don't seem to be living in the real world. I don't get to Galway too often, but I'm pretty sure that it had side streets, houses with gateways and built up traffic in urban areas. If you don't believe me, I'll spend 10 minutes digging out some pictures from Google Streetview or other sources if you really think that's necessary. Let me know if this would help you to get a grip on reality.
To be honest , when there is traffic in the city, most cyclist are on the footpaths ( which is illegal )Where else would you suggest I pull over to when I in the city ?? as I have explain before we do not have areas we can pull into, we have narrow road with 2 way traffic and foot paths.
So just so I understand this fully, you come up with repeated excuses and reasons why it is completely impossible and unreasonable for you to accommodate other road users when you are going slower than them, while you continue to expect other road users to jump out of your way to get you to the back of the next queue of cars a minute or two earlier?
I had the joy one day to watch number of cyclist been stop by the guard & getting giving out to for this for been on the footpath :D:D:D
Yep, I'd have a few :D:D:D at this as well. I hate to see cyclists on the path, and if I'm out walking, I tend to hoosh them out onto the road.
