    pfft, fake moon.

Tonight is the big one. And we might even have a few meteors aswell.
In 2014, the August 10 full moon full moon gives us this year’s closest supermoon. This full moon will be 14% closer and 30% brighter than other full moons of the year. As measured from the centers of the Earth and moon, the August 10 full moon lies 356,896 kilometers (221,675 miles) away. The moon and Earth won’t make such a close encounter again until the full moon of September 28, 2015.

Nice one Lapin very funny :-)

The diameter of the Moon is 3,474 km. Now, let’s compare this to the Earth. The diameter of the Earth is 12,742 km. This means that the Moon is approximately 27% the size of the Earth.

What about surface area? The surface area of the Moon is 37.9 million square kilometers. That sounds like a lot, but it’s actually smaller than the continent of Asia, which is only 44.4 million square km. The surface ares of the whole Earth is 510 million square km, so the area of the Moon compared to Earth is only 7.4%.

How about volume? The volume of the Moon is 21.9 billion cubic km. Again, that sounds like a huge number, but the volume of the Earth is more like 1 trillion cubic kilometers. So the volume of the Moon is only 2% compared to the volume of the Earth.

The mass of the Moon is 7.347 x 1022 kg. But the Earth is much more massive. The mass of the Earth is 5.97x 1024 kg. This means that the mass of the Moon is only 1.2% of the mass of the Earth. You would need 81 objects with the mass of the Moon to match the mass of the Earth.

Saw the big bright round ****er in the sky earlier and immediately regretted heading back to the city this evening, I love walks through the fields with the kind of a moon out. :(

Usually live in the city, but back at the home place, which is fairly rural, for a few days. The sky is incredible tonight.

Have always been a star gazing type of guy, but I grabbed some cushions and a sleeping bag, and lay out on the decking for the past hour or more, with a beer in hand.

Shooting starts, super moon, and one of the clearest skies I've seen in some time. Awesome.

A friend of mine will be busy tonight. He works as a carer for old people. He says they go a bit bonkers when there's a full moon. That's why they're called lunatics, after the word 'lunar'.

Have none of ye seen a big moon before like or wha?

    I mean it's just a feckin' moon.

Back where I grew up we had six moons in the sky at the same time every second month.

    ..... I've said too much.

    OH LOOK!!! BIG MOON!!!!!

    I AM A HUMAN.

    Definitely.
