Can anyone tell me how i can tan with fair skin? I cant ever tan without burning. I was putting on lotion and wasnt getting any colour and then i didnt put on any lotion and i automatically burn. I tried putting om mostrizing cream and all. Obviously im doing somethong wrong and my lack of a salue skin isnt helping. I can never get a golden colour that other people get

what can i do? I hate having fair skin.

You obviously just don't tan. I don't either, many people don't. Accept the skin you are in :)

You gotta do more squats, bro. Can't tan if you're not squatting.

Yeah I don't really tan either. I just accept it now. If I want a tan I buy a bottle of tan and apply. Otherwise I just stay pale and interesting.

Lot's of time in the sun will help, with sun screen. I have quite fair skin myself and usually just go from burn to burn, but this year I've been spending a lot of days outside (consecutively) looking after my research equipment, with factor 50 on sunny days and I've started to get quite a nice bit of color. Although nothing on the undersides of my arms, that's just impossible :D

Fake is probably easier and safer though

If you can't tan, it's a very bad idea to try by sun bathing or using UV tanners. A lot of Irish people have unusual skin types that contain very little ability to produce melanin, the pigment that appears when you tan.

Tanning is basically a protective reaction skin has to sun to avoid damage.

If you can't tan, you'll just burn, damage your skin and put yourself at significantly increased risk of skin cancer. You'll also look older earlier and it's just painful too.

Irish pale skin types seem to be adapted to low light levels (lots of cloud) and can synthesise vitamin D without much sun.

Best solution is just accept you're pale. There's nothing wrong with it. Just pick the right colour clothes.

You can put on fake tan, or just go with what you've got.

Don't bow to media pressure. There's nothing wrong with just being pale.

It's also nonsense that it looks unhealthy.

LOTS of people even Irish people say it to me that i have fair skin which is the case and people then say i dont get a colour when i come back which annoys me. Most Irish people i know tan better than me it seems..

Its hard to accept that you are ugly looking, and pale with 0 talents and have every possible malfunction a person could have but sure what can you do. God what have you done to me.

I learned my lessons today. Started using the tanning beds on Friday and Monday was my third day using it (yes I know, stupid idea) and it was for five minutes and ended up going home from work early because I was in so much pain from the burns. My whole back, bottom and legs are red raw. Half a tub of sudocream and After Sun later and the pain isn't shifting. Lesson well and truly learned. Fake tan is seriously the way to go...

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in Ireland with over 10,000 new cases diagnosed in 2011. The National Cancer Registry of Ireland (NCRI) expects this number to double by 2040.

All U.V. light yes even sunbeds. Even if you have skin that is brown or tans easily you are still at risk if exposed to large amounts of U.V. Tanned leathery lined skin, yuck.

First of all, always use sunscreen.
Now that the days are warmer and I have my arms and chest are more exposed during the day I usually carry mine with me and I'll apply it in the morning before leaving the house and then later in the day before going out if I'm planning to stay outside for a couple of drinks. It baffles me to see people here in Dublin completely red/pink from the Irish sun :o It still burns and it's still dangerous if you sit under it for 2h downing pints.

I have what is usually classed as a Type 2 skin, and I grew up in a fairly sunny and warm country, where most people were naturally tanned - even my sister tans easily, sigh - so I can feel your pain. I was always the odd one out and I had to be more careful than everybody else - staying under the shade for longer, applying more sunscreen, all that stuff.

But I do tan, even if I don't get that golden-brown shade. It just takes a little bit longer - 2-3h of exposing per day, during a week or two for me to see any results, a light golden tone. There's no point in trying to get the same shade as other people, it's just your genetics.
A sun burn is not worth it - it may not even yield you a tan after, your skin may just peel off :(
I also use a lot of hydrating lotion after the sun, it helps avoiding the peeling and dryness and makes your skin look better in general.

Oh, and I find the whole fake tan thing just weird and ugly, it's so easy to tell as a lot of people seem to go for the darker tones. It doesn't look nothing like the real thing :P

Ladies and Gentlemen of this thread, wear sunscreen. If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience.

It all depends on your skin type and it seems that you are the type that doesn't tan. I wouldn't recommend not using spf since you automatically burn (it can cause a lot of issues in your future and for sure create a ton more wrinkles than you'd want when you age) If you want a tan for special events, I'd suggest getting a spray tan (light with a bronzer should be good for your coloring)...don't get them too often because I know of people's skin drying out or not taking to the color as well when they get them every week.

If you don't tan then stay out of the sun. You're at increased risk of uv damage and skin cancer. If you're out in the sun a lot you'll end up prematurely aged without protection, wear sunscreen. Don't worry about being tan, fair skin is beautiful and rare too when everyone is dying their skin orange.
