I hope I am not copying a thread already on this but I did I search and couldn’t see one! The Boston Scientific Clonmel Half Marathon is on Sunday the 17th August at 11:00am. I have done this race the last few years and it’s a great race (helps that’s its local!!), great value for a half at only €25 upto the end of July then it increases to €35 from the 1st August, so get in early for the reduced price! It’s run by Clonmel AC and really well organised with chip timing, Goody bag, Tech T-Shirt and a savage feed afterwards.

    You can enter online.
    http://www.clonmelathleticclub.com/#!
    http://www.clonmelac.com/

the route itself can be seen from this post on the Munster running blog http://munsterrunning.blogspot.ie/2012/07/race-noticeclonmel-half-marathon-sun.html it’s from 2012 but the route is the same.

here is the thread from last year http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056978944

The race falls 10weeks out from Dublin so it could fit into the training plan for anyone doing DCM

I'm in, looking forward to it. Good testing route by all accounts. Sounds like a great race.

It’s a fair route I think, climb at start for a mile then it’s either downhill or flat until mile 10, that's the hill that caught me last year! The hill isn’t overly steep but it’s just where it comes in the race is the killer, then it’s a gentle downhill for 1.5miles to the finish.

I'm in (if I can clear up my current injury), ran it last year and really enjoyed it. Looking forward to this year.
That hill at the poppy fields is tough alright (I think its the long incline before it that saps the legs) but the slight downhill to the finish makes up for it.

Yep...signed up for this a while ago as well.

Weekly mileage is still low at the moment but form is good so hopefully my quality over quantity approach works out :pac:

    Two quick questions -

    Anyone know if there's pacers?

Or, failing that, would anyone be interested in a 1:30 pace bus?

Ihavnt heard if there will be pacers this year yet but there were pacers thelast two years for 1:30, 1:45, 2 & 2:15

Might go out with 1.30 papers and see how things pan out, doubt I'll pull it off though... found the course hard in previous years

just a heads up, only a week left before price increases...

They are also expecting to hit the max entry of 750 people before race day, so there may not be same day registration apparently...

Yep....another candidate here for the "Go-out-at-1:30-and-hang-on-for-dear-life" group.

Training is disarray atm unfortunately - last week a complete write off due to horrendous gastro bug

Still not 100% but might get back on the road tomorrow evening if feeling ok

    Finally signed up,
Few weeks back I was hopeful of sub 1:30 as I managed 1:34 in Waterford last year. At the weekend I ran 12miles in 1:30 as well and that wasn't even at race pace.

however training in the last two weeks has gone to hell so I'm not too hopeful, but sure I'll give it a shot anyway

For anyone interested in the Clonmel Half-Marathon on the 17th of August, there are just under 200 places left. Latest from Clonmel AC...
“With just over a week to go there are only 190 places left for this year’s Boston Scientific Half Marathon before the limit of 750 is reached, so enter now to ensure that you can take your place in this year’s event on August 17th. All pre registered athletes to date will be receiving an email about all the Race Day instructions and directions before this weekend”.

Signed up for this last week. Would you say the Clonmel route is tougher than the Waterford AC HM route? Unsure what pace to go with - Pb'd in Waterford last December (1:33:08) & McMillan has me @ 1:31:xx off a recent 10k pb

Elevation on the 2013 Clonmel course was certainly more then the new 2013 Waterford course, I've always found Waterford easier....even on the old course. In Clonmel for me I find the Cahir road bit and the climb towards the ring road takes alot out of me.

here are the two Garmin profiles if you want to compare :)
    Clonmel - http://connect.garmin.com/activity/360958361
    Waterford - http://connect.garmin.com/activity/411300094

I agree with Cabaal - Clonmel is defo a tougher course than the new Waterford one. Mile 11 knocks the shi*e out of you. :)

Well I'm down to do this so how will one know what the 1.30 group looks like?:)

Am I right in thinking that we go up one of those hills around Knocklofty House? Some of them hills are awful steep but short, nasty climbs from my memory bank of taking short cuts to get to various parts of the world when Clonmel used to flood.

I presume you are talking about hill up from Knocklofty to marlfield? No the race does not go over any hill around Knocklofty house, it follows the suir along the wood into town. Unless you call the climb over the bridge of the suir at Knocklofty steep!!

That must be the one alright but I can't remember the name other than Knocklofty. I hope to be fine getting over the bridge, if not, I'll just jump into the Suir for a cool down:pac:

I think the hill you're thinking of is the one at around mile 5. It's not very long but will certainly make you put the brakes on. It's before you come to Knocklofty and is followed by a long drop at the far side where you can make up the time you lost on the way up. ;)

I wouldn't worry about it too much, they will have your name registered anyway and will be able find your pack under that.

Best of luck to everyone tomorrow, gutted I won't make the start line - mess up the schedule too much coming back from injury - enjoyable race so will be back next year hopefully. Wouldn't worry about the hill at the poppy fields, tough to get over but its a nice fast decline to the finish :)

Sure you're always blowing out your hole Beef :)

    What happened, conditions or conditioning?

    How did Bulmers go?

Well done Clonmel AC on a great race. Nice turnout , the weather played ball and the hot shower plus the lovely grub afterwards made it a great first time experience. Thought my 1.30 goose was cooked around mile 8 when the guy who I was tracking slowed up and left me in no mans land. The demons really kicked in at mile 9 , so much so that I was swearing that this was my last HM and shag all the training! ! Next thing I know this group of 4 runners came alongside at a handy clip. I inquired if they were the 1.30 bus and my luck was in!! The chap leading the group was fantastic, calling out the times and controlling our pace whenever a runner flew by us. He kept us going up the last hill and made the last 2 miles fly by. Crossed the line in 1.29.17 so a big pb for me :-D Big respect dude, sorry I forgot your name but I was completely zoned out for 10 minutes afterwards. .
I should be back again next year. ..unless I pack this whole running Lark in ;-).
Sorry I missed you beef hope you got on okay?..just saw above. .hey..we survived. .that's what counts at the end of the day!! Well done.

I'd like to say conditions but conditioning I think. Not enough endurance for the pace and I was running through treacle on the uphill mile 11. That knocked the stuffing out of me and I couldn't get the pace back up for a fast finish.

I don't know how bulmers got on but you can be sure I'll account for several Guinness in a while. ;)

Great race put on by Clonmel AC this morning. Plenty of marshals, junctions well manned and plenty of the Fuzz where they were needed. Course was tough but honest and the sun and breeze made it tougher. The downhills were very welcome but the body will pay for them tomorrow i'd say. Climb between 10-11 miles was a killer so close to the end. 1.34.54 watch time for me, may lose few secs off that when official results are posted. Well done Clonmel AC.

Snap,1:34:50 on watch for me. Got to 10 miles in 70 minutes & blew up - splits for last 3 were 7:58, 8:00 & 7:48. Glad I kept going when the demons arrived.
Would echo the previous comments on an excellently run race - a credit to Clonmel AC. Well done all involved. Official time just in 1:34:48

Had very low expectations for today after possibly the worst preparation I've had in my entire running "career".

I had adopted a quality over quantity approach anyway but the ass had fallen out of this even in recent weeks - missed 2 weeks training last month with tummy bug and only managed two long-ish runs of 18k and 21k.

Anyway, had taken the approach this morning that this would be a training run with a bunch of other people and a snazzy t-shirt at the end

Took it very easy in the opening few kms - took me a while to actually catch and overtake the 1:45 pacers and started feeling pretty good for the next few kms. Got a good boost from my first half a gel at the first water station and started to motor along nicely after that.

Kept myself topped up with gels on a regular basis after that (which I've been poor at in the past) and got to 10k in around 45:30. Pushed on a bit after that and found myself passing out a decent amount of people over the next few kms.

Flew up the hill near the end and felt really strong - did the last 3k all in <4mins so was delighted with that. I'm normally the guy going backwards with fellas patting me on the back saying keep it up.

Finished in 1:34ish which is a 2 min PB :D:D:D:D Absolutely chuffed at the minute given the relative shambles of recent weeks.

Really well organised event - couldn't fault one thing about it from start to finish. The route was fine too - wasn't expecting the long drag at the start the numerous fast sections made up for this.

What a race, I am delighted with that got in just under 1-45, that's an 8 min PB!!! Stuck with the pacers till the hill at mile 10 where I struggled for the second year in a row but rallied for the last 2 miles. Also got an unofficial 10mile PB!! As per usual Clonmel ac put on a fantastic show from marshaling, water stations, directions, pack handouts, tech t shirt, and of course the grub afterwards and all for just €25. It amazes me that it doesn't sell out every year but saying that they got record numbers this year.

Roll on Dublin now where I hope to get in under 4hrs...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,555 ✭✭✭chinguetti

Cracking race done by Clonmel AC. It would shame alot of other events what can be done at a decent price. Tough tough course but a pb always helps forget the hills. And there was a good few of them.
Would heartily recommend this event for anyone next year.
And now time for a pint and grub :)

I have to say I enjoyed the route bar mile 11. Surprised to see only 547 finishers, this race has big potential so I would imagine record numbers again next year. I'll certainly be recommending it. Hats off to all involved.
