ya an apt would be grand, as long as there are places to bring the wee man, parks etc 550 would be absolute max I can afford. Looked on daft, maritana gate, and a few on Canada st looked nice but again I'm completely ignorant as to whether these are safe places to live!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 972 ✭✭✭Digital Society

550 is actually a large budget and should get you a good place. Youll always hear stories about anywhere. Same in all counties.

No matter where i suggest someone will be along to say they heard something bad and suggest somewhere else.

Id say everywhere is safe to be honest. No where is a bad place in that sense. Waterford is a safe place overall.

Do you drive? Do you need parking?

A quick browse through daft shows the first 5 or 6 pages are all student apartments. best to avoid them with a toddler.

Heres the 1st nice one i see http://www.daft.ie/lettings/oconnell-court-waterford-city-waterford/1451820/. Its just as you come over the bridge. Decent spot with closed off courtyard but no parking.

Another one here. Never actually been in these but they look fine and in a decent spot. http://www.daft.ie/lettings/apt-johns-lane-waterford-city-waterford/1451043/. Someone else might comment on it.

Scotch quay is alright but furniture is usually a bit crap. http://www.daft.ie/lettings/scotch-quay-waterford-city-waterford/1427611/ Apartment are cold and old but people seem to recommend it here often.

Decent spot here aswell. Closed off courtyard. Just beside the bridge. No parking. http://www.daft.ie/lettings/the-malthouse-mary-street-waterford-city-waterford/1338875/

Nice one in Maritana but as i said they are a bit small . Small but modern. http://www.daft.ie/lettings/maritana-gate-canada-street-waterford-city-waterford/1426511/.

Looks big enough and seems to be close to Maritana Gate. No idea exactly where though. http://www.daft.ie/lettings/marina-court-waterford-city-waterford/1393401/

Adelphi Quay isnt the worst and has parking. Its just up at the end of the Quay at the round tower. http://www.daft.ie/lettings/adelphi-quay-waterford-city-waterford/1383130/

Another Maritana with better pictures. Looks nice http://www.daft.ie/lettings/maritana-gate-canada-street-waterford-city-waterford/1457571/

Also a lot can depend on the creche. Do you know what creches can take the child? have you checked that?

I've been onto Waterford childcare centre and they have good rates and reviews, also 2 others that are out of my budget. I feel so green here, but I literally only know the place to drive through bar one night there!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 972 ✭✭✭Digital Society

All the places ive linked to would be good id say. Also your budget is good. 500 gets you a good modern 2 bed apartment.

Waterford Childcare Centre isnt in town its a bit outside so that might be an issue.

    Do you drive?

Thank you so much for your thorough reply too, its very appreciated!

    No problem Do you drive?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54 ✭✭AnneSam

I'll have a car alright in the next few weeks, creche wise its so expensive and I've looked around on the net for opinions so that is where I based my search

Right so it probably wouldnt make sense to live in town if your child was up in the Cleaboy Creche and you where in CTI. It would make more sense to get a place outside town with parking. Well obviously youll need parking either way.

Let me take a look at other places for a minute.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54 ✭✭AnneSam

I was thinking town because ill have to get a part time job and I don't want to be too far away, that is if I land one, that I'm assuming can be tricky too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,651 ✭✭✭sillysocks

Not sure on the price of crèches in waterford but would you consider a childminder instead? Generally would be more flexible than crèche esp if you want flexible hours or days.
I think norm for childminders is 30 per day if that helps.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 972 ✭✭✭Digital Society

The only place that has parking that i mentioned there was Adelphi Quay. Others have on Street Parking that needs tickets and that. lots of hassle as streets will be packed and half the time you wont get space. Adelphi has good car park that always has spaces. Has one of those swipe card Gates with the barrier that lifts. Youll need to basically drive the length of the quay plus about 10 mins in the morning to the creche but its in easy walking distance to CTI.

Just look it up on Google maps and youll see what i mean. 9 mins Drive without Traffic but easily could be 30 mins at 9AM with schools.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54 ✭✭AnneSam

Everything helps!! He's in creche at the moment and considering I don't really know anyone there, he needs to be around other kids, I'm not as much fun to him, I'm hoping with the creche fees quoted to me I can swing it if I can find a babysitter in the evenings too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54 ✭✭AnneSam

Wow, never thought parking would be such an issue!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 972 ✭✭✭Digital Society

With everything taken into account i think Adelphi Quay is your best bet. Theres good parking, Nearly always a place to rent there and is in your budget. Its also literally 5 mins walk into town and safe.

Someone might suggest somewhere else but problem will be that place might not be available. Adelphi would be safe to assume you'll get a place there.

Pictures here to give you an idea of parking

That's just by comparison to cork city, generally parking is a given....that said, its still cork lol

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54 ✭✭AnneSam

Thank you so much, for your efforts, I really appreciate it. Hopefully there will be plenty more like you to welcome a blow in!!! :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 972 ✭✭✭Digital Society

Ah youll have nothing to worry about here. Its quiet enough compared to Cork but safe and all that.

Well it'll be an experience anyway!! Well cork def has its areas that you're kinda limited for family friendly safe areas, and def not in town at night anymore

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 972 ✭✭✭Digital Society

Yeah its not bad in that way. Only bad part is the jobs. Theres none. And all the problems that come with that. Shops closing down. No new shops opening. People constantly complaining.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54 ✭✭AnneSam

would bar/restaurant work be the same?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 972 ✭✭✭Digital Society

No idea. But if theres one thing Waterford has its plenty of Restaurants. You'd have to ask others about that.

I looked up all of those places and because my rent allowance limit is 475 letting agents wont let to me despite the fact that Ill pay the balance, she actually said for me to look for a private landlord....which is next to impossible on the net there are no classifieds or else Im looking in the wrong places!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,626 ✭✭✭wmpdd3

Can you get a cets place, are you getting a JSA payment? Or a VTOS payment? Lone parents? If you are you could get a free creche place.

There are a few community creches near CTI (your college). There's one in Manor st,and one in hennessy's road.

Call the Waterford Childcare committee, they are brilliant and they will help you in anyway they can. (051) 860 444

    http://www.cccw.ie/about-us/

Wouldnt live in John's lane with a child personally.

I think you will get somewhere for you rent amount, there are some appts vacant around the quay / O'Connell st / Grace Dieu. They are the other end of town but still only 15 min walk from CTI. Grace Dieu is the furthest away.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54 ✭✭AnneSam

Ya I contacted them and they were brilliant very helpful sent out info and answered all questions was very happy with them. Is o Connell street nit really busy though??

What about something like this. 2 Bed About 1 mile over the bridge, free parking, green area for child to play on plus a couple of crèches within 5 min drive and €450 pm

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 395 ✭✭tramoreman77

What course are you thinking of doing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54 ✭✭AnneSam

Wow that's kind of ideal, does it matter that its lower than the rent allowance??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54 ✭✭AnneSam

    A healthcare on in wcfe

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,626 ✭✭✭wmpdd3

Highly recommend the last place there, I live in Ferrybank, there are 2 creches within 2 min walk.

Library and post office 2 mins away too. The bus stops across from the church and goes to town, you walk from the Tower hotel 1 block to the CTI. (WCFE)

It does't matter if you rent is below, but you still have to pay €35 for you and something for your toddler, sorry cant remember how much, so if its less then they give you less to make up the total amount.

The only issue I can see s storage heaters, could be expensive for electricity.

Bumblebees and Ferryfun are the 2 creches.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54 ✭✭AnneSam

    Storage heaters??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,626 ✭✭✭wmpdd3

Yeah, they look like fat radiators but they are electric. you set them to come on during the night and then keep the heat in all day.

the electricity will be cheaper during the night because you will have a day/night meter. if you switch then on during the day, they cost a bomb and take ages to get hot.

they will effect your bill either way, best heading is gas in my opinion, but most flats have these heaters.

in terms of traffic and getting to cti and a hotel job, Adelphi quay may your best bet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54 ✭✭AnneSam

You're not the first to mention Adelphi Quay!! The only place there in my price range right now looks a little teeny though for the price!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,036 ✭✭✭ei9go

Parking is a problem in Maritana Gate because it's 1200 extra a year

Look at the infirmary, secure free parking and close to everything.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54 ✭✭AnneSam

1200 a year for parking! Thats crazy!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,626 ✭✭✭wmpdd3

My friend lived in the apts behind the infirmary and they were fine, obviously a ground floor one would be better as the windows open out. You pay €50 for the fob for the gate so you can get in and out, I think you get that back when you leave.

They were on the RAS scheme over there, it different to rent allowance. Its 5 mins walk into town and CTI and the supermarket are really close. Good few creches around there too.

I'm living in the apartments in Gracedieu at the moment, I wouldn't recommend them!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54 ✭✭AnneSam

    Really why so???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 534 ✭✭✭Ericaa

Well first of all, half of the building is unfinished.
The level of anti social behaviour is horrible here. There's constantly kids in messing with the elevator which is a pain in the ass for me because I'm on the 3rd level and always have a pram with me.
There is nothing in the surrounding area here, it's a 25 minute walk to the closest shop. There's nowhere in the close vicinity to take my son to play.
Cars are constantly vandalised in the car park.
The management company is utterly useless. Nothing ever gets fixed unless someone who lives here fixes it themselves.

That's all I can think of for now!
My apartment is so damn beautiful though :( I'll be sad to leave it but it's just not worth the cons...

oh god that's terrible!! Thank you very much for the heads up! That's brutal for you though, hopefully you'll find somewhere better soon :)

Just be aware that you will not be able to park in WCFE, so you could potentially be adding the cost of daily parking to your expenses.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54 ✭✭AnneSam

    Where's nearby to park then??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 972 ✭✭✭Digital Society

    Railway Square.
