Nice, there hasn't been a decent western since the Missing.

Nice, there hasn't been a decent western since the Missing.

There's been a few I'd reckon, the proposition was decent.

From footage shown at CinemaCon, very impressive by all accounts, hopefully a teaser trailer will be out soon

One thing is for sure, as much as I like Leo, Tom Hardy is going to outact him in ever scene most likely.

I know it's somewhat divisive (or was, I think it's reputation has increased in the years since), but The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford ranks among the best westerns on the basis of cinematography alone.

Ya that's an amazing western, but in a way it doesn't really deal with the usual tropes and iconography of westerns as much either. so i can see why a lot of people don't like it. Open Range is a good western too, as is the salvation.

This looking awesome. Apparently all sorts of issues on set, sounds troublesome, but the pain (literally) could deliver a master piece. Gone way past the budget already tho...

    http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/how-leonardo-dicaprios-revenant-shoot-810290

It's going for the seamless shot style, not sure if it's gonna be one long seamless shot like Birdman but a lot of the technique will be used. Sweeps and slow pans galore. But for something that's shot in natural light it looks stunning already.

You gotta feel for Leo here!
I remember hearing he battled to get Tom Hardy involved

Watching this trailer, I can't help but feel everyone's going to be talking about Tom's performance walking out of the theatre!

I hope the studio has allotted enough money for marketing to have that trailer shown before as many movies as possible in the run up to it's release because seeing that in cinema would create serious interest.

Either DiCaprio or Hardy, but hopefully both, will hopefully get an Oscar from this. But I'm more interested in seeing if Lubezki can get 3 in a row for best cinematography, the man's a genius. I'm half looking forward to the story and movie itself and half looking forward to just experiencing his style of shooting again in the cinema. Pity it wasn't shot in 70mm film like The Hateful Eight, though, because this movie along with The Hateful Eight would help influence more movies being released in the format. But they already had more difficulties and delays on set than expected and the movie still looks fantastic either way.

Saw the trailer last night. Created the most anticipation I've had ahead of a movie on the back of a single trailer in some time.

    WOW what a trailer

Watched the trailer yesterday. Looks amazing. DiCaprio gonna finally get an Oscar off the back of this? Love the fact that there were set/filming issues and the actors went through hell during the shoot - think it's really going to show in the final product.

This is based on Hugh Glass life story like the 1971 film

    Man in the Wilderness (1971)

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067388/

Although the source material is a 2002 novel based on Hugh Glass
    so not a re-boot or re-make as such maybe a re-telling

Just finished watching this. Best cinematography I've seen in years. Di Caprio and Hardy give a master class in acting.

Very good movie, Hardy and DiCaprio are both brilliant, it is a bit long though.

Have t ready for tonight & can't wait!

I'm always a bit nervous of my high expectations because I'm a huge ldc fan but hopefully won't be disappointed!

No talk about piracy please. If you've seen the film, feel free to comment on it, but you don't need to say how/where/when you watched it.

Its a very good movie leo and hardy are brilliant in it.slightly overlong but the scenery and the way it was shot are amazing.

I honestly preferred Richard Harris's version Man in the Wilderness.

I honestly preferred Richard Harris's version Man in the Wilderness.

    ya

They show that on that sometimes on one of the old movie channels(TCM or MGM)

The man the movies are made on High Glass is on wiki here

Watched it last night. The bear - Jesus, even though I knew it was coming, it was brutal.
Agree with previous poster that said it was slightly long, although I wouldn't have cut much, maybe 15/20 minutes.

Leo and Tom were fantastic I thought. Really got the feeling of "enduring" the film rather than actively enjoying what was happening iykwim.

The natural light effect was stunning, can't wait to see it properly on the big screen to get the full experience.

The addition of the extra character to bulk out Glass' motivation was a good idea I think as there were several points during his journey I just kept thinking why doesn't he just put himself out of his misery but he just kept going.

Not my favourite film in terms of storyline but couldn't fault Leo's performance. Not sure how much acting was involved in surviving the sub-zero temperatures or if it was just him reacting in reality!

I really wanted to like this movie but i found most parts to be very boring and dull.

Hardy was sensational though hope he gets the plaudits for this

    Was the bear real?

    Was the bear real?

Yes and what it did to Leo was totally unscripted. Thankfully it happened on the last day of shooting and they got it all on film. Nobody has seen Leo since.

He's a hard lad..I hoped thought he was at the bottom of the Atlantic once. Turns out he was just doing a runner on Kate Winslet.

I liked it, a bit long really, but beautifully shot. Some scenes you wouldn't want to be eating dinner too though. Bear and horse scenes in particular were

    Is this out in Ireland?

The horse scene finished me off completely, I was watching it through my palms over my eyes at that stage thinking no way would I put myself through that!

Just watched it there. Very strong performances from Leo and Tom (I did find his accent difficult to understand at times). It was a little on the long side but I enjoyed it

Just finished watching this, absolutely outstanding. Some of the best cinematography I've ever seen, probably the best since Children Of Men which was done by Emmanuel Lubezki as well, and a masterclass from the two leads. Honestly can't find a fault with it right now, and fully expect to feel even stronger about it once I get to see it on the big screen.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,719 ✭✭✭JaMarcusHustle

Just finished this, and found it very underwhelming.

It looks outstanding, but it was a weak enough story. Thought it felt a bit hollow tbh, and hard to care for any of the characters - just felt like they had no real substance to them.

A pretty looking revenge story, but tbh I wasnt bothered whether he got it or not.

A bit dull and drawn out I thought and I found the dream sequences not to add anything, in fact the opposite. And Tom Hardy's mumbling diction and accent were off-putting. Thumbs down from me.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

Storyline was rather far fetched but the cinematography and acting were incredible, captured the dirt, grit and savagery of the era tremendously well. Very long and could have had a quarter hour trimmed from its run time without consequence but I enjoyed every minute of it. Excellent film and well worth a watch.

Film of the year for me.

As someone who disliked Birdman a lot I was really skeptical about watching his next hyped project but I loved it.

Just an incredible film all round. Film of the year for me

You do know it's a true story?

Yes, based on, or as the poster itself says, 'inspired by' a true story. The story of Hugh Glass is half-myth, and the movie is full of characters and events that have no basis in history.
