Dumping a load of rubbish from home into the work skip undetected

Caught up on some very late Spring cleaning & cleared out the garden shed yesterday.
Filled the car to the brim with 7 years worth of crap I've been looking to offload.
Made it into work about 10 minutes early & got to chuck it all into the work skip.
I'm made up from my thrifty dastardly deed. :D

It's always nice to freeload something off work now & then.
Missus needs about 160 colour pages printed a week for her customer handouts.
I manage to run these off for years unknown to my colleagues.
I also update her blog, admin her bulk mailer & update her website during my office hours. :D

Regale me with tales of how you use your work hours or workplace to your advantage ?.

You better hope they don't have CCTV covering the skip or you could have some very uncomfortable explaining to do!!!

I think that is called theft.

Be careful OP, it's a slippery slope. Before you know it, you will be stealing chicken goujons and getting the sack.

Think it was a tenners worth. Still a sack full of chicken goujons in the freezer would be convenient.

Your employer is clearly very lucky to have you OP.

Anyone made redundant in your place recently?

If yes, you and people like you should feel partly responsible.

Where I am there's a few bins for cardboard / plastics for different businesses to dump their stuff.

Some one dumped a washing machine into one of the bins, the cheeky gits. :pac:

Someone did that at a place I worked, and they were caught on candid camera!

Happy enough to be the ONE on this.

Do you think it is reasonable for a guy to print out 160 colour handouts a week for years ?

Now and then might not be too bad, but I would think that his missus should be shouldering the costs of printing handouts for her customers.

In all seriousness though, context is everything. If you're working for a small family firm and taking the p*ss entirely then you're bang out of order. If you work for a profitable, exploitative multinational then printing a few copies or using the skip in work isn't a big deal in my opinion.

    160 a week isn't a few

    What about non-exploitative multinationals?

Am I ok to keep stealing the pens?

You're sort of gambling with your job and probably the jobs of others around you. Either you get caught and fired, or the person above you get's blamed for all the thieving and he gets fired. Or nobody notices which shows the company can't see it's hemorrhaging money and goes belly up.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,683 ✭✭✭Kensington

Everything you do in terms of IT systems in your workplace is logged. Everything.
You're just gambling on no-one noticing!

I am an IT Administrator, and I currently have an 80 inch T.V. in my office which unfortunately cannot be installed in the conference room until July 14th due to technical difficulties ;). I guess It'll just have to stay in my office until then :)

What would be wonderful would be this thread being spotted /after/ the idiot was caught dumping in the skip, allowing for multiple warnings and ultimately the sack.

    What's this "we" business?

I just despise "cute hoorism" is all. Now tbh I don't believe a word of the OP, but I've seen plenty enough examples of people who think they're fierce clever altogether, and all it is, is just cnutish behaviour.

So you think it's ok to steal from your employer?

Oh here comes the guilt peddlar touching everyone with his misery stick.

I'm not against the odd biro, notepad, ruler or maybe even a pink or green highlighter pen every now and again... :D

    But:

160 colour printouts, a week, over years is a fair few grands worth of colour photocopying...

Just taking the piss really, or trolling, not sure.

Our business is booming, mainly due to the fact we can pay our much of our production staff zero due to the government sponsored job slave program.
It's easy undercut your competitors when they have to pay wages.
I see myself more as a modern day Robin Hood without having to worry about giving to the poor.

160 a week is just over 30 a day or 10 in the morning, afternoon & evening.
Drop in the ocean in the overall scheme.

I wouldn't take your word for it that your business is booming just because your company is using cheap labour. Maybe their business model depends on the cheapest labour.

It's easy undercut your competitors when they have to pay wages.
If you don't agree with the terms of the contract don't work for them. If you get caught no ones going to accept your robbin hood for stealing, the company will more than likely press charges to make an example out of you which would turn up if any future employers search for you online.

Do people still actually use their own printers (or even have printers)? I would say the vast majority of people do all their personal printing in the office.

Correct, today I felt like a bonus so I saved myself about 80 quid in landfill charges.
I feel like a good happy employee cause I've been able to do this.

Some difference between printing out a few boarding passes in work or the odd recipe and what not than running off almost 8000 colour copies every year.

It's pretty costly, especially in colour.

    8000 * 20c per page = 1600 euros per year.

Not something I would be proud of, throw in the additional costs of the waste disposal and you have yourself a sacking offence right there.

Few grand worth of theft. I you worked forme I'd be happy to hand you your cards, not too keen on thieves.

Unfortunately not, private sector, man & boy.
I'm in a special circumstance, I'm an R&D Design Engineer, one good idea can save/make the company millions & I've had a few in my time.
I'm sort of let to my own devices, east wing of the castle stuff, management don't come down here too often.
