Thinking of deleting my account. I know people abroad may need it and there are a few people abroad that I won't be able to contact but facebook depresses me at this stage. Few funny videos on it and can be a laugh at time but its mainly an arena for boasting

    Nobody 'needs' a website.

Yes. It is more important than oxygen. In fact, a team of leading scientists are considering replacing all the oxygen in the atmosphere with facebook.

you could always keep your account and just use self restraint not to look at it so you can keep in contact with the people you want to.

I can't delete mine, they are sneaky c*nts, when I put my password in to deactivate it - it tells me it's the wrong password - and it's not.

It gets harder to creep on people you know without it. Night vision goggles, ladders etc.

Facebook isn't that bad, you just need to be careful of who your adding.

But, but, but.... if I give it up how will I know what 'friends' kids ate for their dinner etc...

Facebook is a fad. Can't understand how it has such a high market capitalisation.

Most people are too thick to realise they are being exploited.

Facebook is essential. How else will people you are vaguely acquainted with know how strongly you feel about issues through the medium of sharing inaccurate and sometimes quite racist images and memes?

Why has this word all of a sudden become a verb?

Never used any of them social media sites, ever.

    Nuke people you don't know/care about/talk to

the human brain cannot deal with more than 150 to 170 relationships. Its just to much and the data you need and want gets lost in the noise.

I'm starting to use FB again after 2 or 3 years off it and down now to 170 friends and its so much better and nicer now i don't have a wall filled with "like this to cure X" or drunk photos of people i kinda know from school

If Facebook it "depressing" you then you should delete it. Send the people abroad your email address and keep in contact that way.

Never got the hang of it. Opened an a/c years ago as friends and family moved abroad, but never really got the point. A mate "explained" it all to me - it sounded like work that no one paid you for.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 274 ✭✭neil_

Of course you don't need facebook, you're not gonna drop dead without it. The fact that you don't need something is not a reason to go without it though. It's handy for talking to people when they're outside of shouting distance (although there are other options for that). It's also a nice a way to keep track of people you don't see very often; even if you don't really give a **** about them it's nice to know they're still alive.

Remember you can hide people off your newsfeed, or block them, or just not compulsively check facebook 200x per day so it doesn't annoy you.

It's hard to do away with it for the younger people.

I just use the messenger app on my smartphone to keep in touch with people. Got someone to change my password for me so I can't log in to the actual thing. Far better off.

Absolutely I need Facebook, how else will I validate my gym work or my good looks if not for the likes that I desperately crave the second I post a status or picture.

I'm finding I'm only using Facebook for the news via 'following' pages like BBC, Sky News and getting gym info via my gym's 'group' and talking to friends using the Messaging app. I don't think I've actually posted a status or photo or link in a long, long time.

its handy for some things....using it to house hunt with my housemates who are away, and i use it for keeping on top of society events from college (they only post on facebook anymore, so oyu fall out of the loop of events otherwise). also sometimes use it to keep in touch with people abroad. other than that though its all just time wasting.

I don't have a facebook account. What gets me as somebody from Dublin suburbia is that
It's as if in order to be seen for having a basic level of online savvy in the country towns and villages , you join facebook as part your first steps. And in the beginning act online according to the gospel of Facebook.

Hah! You know what I mean.

'To creep on people' is not the same as 'creeping around' (as is moving slowly/sneaking)

It's an odd development of the word 'creepy'. Which was never a verb.

Or maybe I'm really confused and really just don't even English.

I only have it because I need it for a Spotify account.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 306 ✭✭yes there

I use facebook as a sort of healthy reminder to myself that I am not as sad as most of my aquantances on it. So I use other peoples stupidity, lack of self awareness and privacy to feel good about myself and FB is the best available tool to provide for that. Unless you are a small business or are like me then FB is pointless.

I find I handy for keeping in contact with a few friends abroad. Other then that I throw up funny pics and some friends throw links to some good articles to read.

I don't understand why people moan about it, don't go on it if you don't want to.

You don't need Facebook for Spotify, just an email address.

Same as any site really including boards, reddit, youtube, news sites etc. Very useful in some ways, entertaining, addictive and only really needed when you have a specific use for it. And in fairness most websites have a use, just a lot of people overuse the social aspect of the sites.

The downside of it all is just the fact that any site with a large user base will have a very high noise to signal ratio for any particular individual. Whether its facebook, reddit, boards, youtube its all the same. From any one persons perspective 99% of what's on there is just chaff.

Good luck with trying to delete your account. They made it practically impossible to do so. You have to jump through hoops just to suspend your account for two weeks which they insist you do before proceeding to the next stage.

I didn't need a two week 'cooling off' period for any of my human relationships!;)

    It's a popular website.

Frankly I'm surprised you haven't heard of it.

Even my grandfather knows that there is a thing on the internet called Facebook.

How you've managed to be on the internet and not have heard of it is baffling.

    Please explain further.

Just delete all your friends.. then it's pretty much null and void anyway apart from a storage place for your pictures.
