I'm creating this thread so that all football quips & quotes can all be placed into one convenient place for me to ignore. I'd hate to have to stop reading the Chat thread due to an influx of Soccer.

    Good Luck Ireland!

What's happening? Did Ireland win a match or something?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,639 ✭✭✭✭OldGoat

From what I can gather in the endless conversations in the office we just bought Gordon Banks and then a plane crashed somewhere but Maradona lived to become a priest.

Er, right. OK. Puts mod hat on slightly tilted. So how you gonna handle this OG. Are soccer and related words now banned in the waiting room, like B*** N** and B**** ? Just so I know who to red card... :-)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,639 ✭✭✭✭OldGoat

Sounds about right. Red carding someone is footballish jargon right? Don't think we'll Ban anyone unless I'm really badly hungover and in a bit of a mood. We'll just move any fooballastic posts in here and ignore them forevermore.

So, just what is the onside rule?

I will be watching some of the games, and those I miss I will be regaled with the goings-on on the pitch. I will be interested in the quarter finals, semi finals and the (Hallejuah) final but will be so tense I will have to leave the room and pace up and down in another room. This is just what I do every four years.

There is a desperate amount of noise coming from the sitting room tv. Cheering and shouting and stuff. I wish your man would put his hearing aids in.

Anyone remember these competitions in the Sunday Press and Sunday Independent in the 1960's and 1970's? They were extremely popular. They showed a photo of a GAA match with the ball removed and you had to guess the position of the ball by placing an X at the spot and send in your entry. You could improve your chances by placing multiple X marks, accompanied by extra entry money, of course. Entered loads of times but never won a sausage!

Quick update, the Opening Ceremony was Krap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,552 ✭✭✭Layinghen

    What it has started already:eek:

Hopefully the good weather will kick in for the next few weeks and that will distract The Rooster from the football, and I won't have to listen to "very interesting" football facts.

I remember doing those competitions when I was a kid. I thought they were soccer though but I could be wrong. Never knew you had to send in money with it - oooh, that's why I never won a bean! :o

Ireland are struggling a bit against Argentina, 1/2time it's 10-9.

Hope the second half is better.

There's a chap called Fred, playing for Brazil.

I wonder what his surname is?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,300 ✭✭✭martinn123

Oops Dunphy says the F Word, live on RTE

That will provide more comment than the first half, which was lousy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,551 ✭✭✭Rubecula

    I watched a game :)

    Honduras and Ecuador

Good entertainment, it was all rush and run just like a footy game used to be. I actually enjoyed it.

According to the lads on RTE,

    Algeria, look like World Beaters,

North Korea look like Panel Beaters

So if you have a car problem, look out for some Koreans.

We heard that one on RTE too. They must have been writing these for weeks in preparation! And yeah, South Korea more likely. Kim wouldn't let his lads play. :( Here's Kim:

I cant see her throwing his dinner to the dog when he arrives in late from the pub.

Back OT, I felt sorry for the USA last night. Conceding the equaliser with 20 seconds left must have been heartbreaking
