bit of advice

Just looking for a little bit of advice, tend to eat clean (paleo) the last year, apart from the odd weekend or holiday. I have steadily put on a stone while on it.

I was at an endriocologist yesterday who reckons that the weight gain has nothing to do with my hormones and told me to join weight watchers….Im fairly disheartened by the whole thing, I eat clean 90% of the time, im a vegetarian so I rely on eggs for protein.

Typical diet would be 2 egg omelette and spinach for breakfast most days, the odd day I have porridge with chia and flaxseeds, salad with pepper, onion, lettuce, spinach and 2 boiled eggs for lunch, sometimes with an avocado and dinner would be eggs & a variety of veg (onion, mushrooms, pepper, broccoli, spinach), or veg curry.

I would eat 1-2 pieces of fruit a day, usually apple and some days I would have nuts, try to keep under 100g, not every day. I would have a protein shake after exercise.

I exercise, do weights and 30 mins cardio two to three times a week so i would exercise 5 days a week.

Im so disheartened at the moment, any advice would be appreciated.

The whole weightwatchers/slimming world doesnt really sit well with me, but should i give one of them a go instead?

My guess is that your portions are too big. I am also a vegetarian and have a similar diet to you...from the meals you listed 2 of those and a few snacks would do me for a day (omelette and curry for example) and a few snacks. I do have a smaller appetite than most people. I still could see how that diet would make you put on weight...it all depends on the portion sizes really!

Do you get protein from anywhere else?

Have you tracked how many calories you are eating a day? Myfitnesspal is a good app to use for this. You can eat too much good food too! If you are putting on weight then you are eating more calories than your body requires. Your portion control might just need a little tweaking

thanks, i will try that and see if it helps. I was doing as programme before and was told to consider two eggs and a protion, but im gonna cut down and track calories, thanks for advice.

you seem to be doing everything right...

There must be some hidden calories somewhere...
you don't mention liquids. What do u normally drink in a day and does it contain sugar?

water and herbal teas...water with lemon in it, nothing with sugar or caffeine.

I'd weigh the porridge and check calories in that
    Rest seems okay
Is it purely weight going on are your measurements a lot bigger also

    I'm stumped...

    any cheat days? treats? alcohol?

no, if i was going on holidays, i would relax and have any foods or drink, or special occasion, but they arent very regular. It must be my portions, i thought that maybe it was hormonal as have other issues, am awaiting results from bloods but primarliy endo thinks its not, so will track that for a few weeks and see, its just tough to think i was lighter when i ate rubbish and drank alcohol. Will give myself another month and cut down and go from there.

Your diet sounds great but as other posters have said, it IS possible to gain weight eating just "good" food if you're eating too much of it. You mentioned you try to stay under 100g of nuts - well a 100g portion of nuts has about 600kcal in it so that could well be a source of extra calories.

What you should do is figure out how many calories you need to lose weight (there are calculators in the stickies on this forum), then bang all your food (weigh everything!) into MyFitnessPal and see where you're at. Then reduce where necessary.

If you find that you're in or around your maintenance calories then there must be something else going on. But first step is MFP anyway - and you can bring it in to show the doctor and everything if you need to!

i dont know to be honest..

Im going to start tomorrow, use track everything and cut out the nuts, i was always wary about them, but its so easy to over eat them, going to be 100% for the next month. Take new measurements and go from there! thanks for all yer good advice.

You don't need to have cheat days to put on weight, calorie amount could just be too large.

OP - assuming its fat that is going on then just make your portions smaller - this is teh easiest way. Working out your tdee and tracking intake is more complicated but would be more accurate.

You can have a healthy diet and still gain weight. If that's the case, keep doing what you're doing, eat the same... only less.
