That's bloody ridiculous. What needs to happen is proper co-operation between the Department of Social Protection and the Census to establish who exactly is at risk of poverty and therefore getting into crime, and where they live. Then napalm the sh!t out of them and the surrounding estate. That'll furkan learn 'em, before the whole place turns into Terenure.

Draconian punishments have never worked. Many countries have the death penalty for even 'less serious' crimes and yet those crimes still occur.

Finding, and eliminating the cause of the offending behaviour, providing psychological treatment when necessary & rehabilitating the offender is the ideal response.

Early intervention for those at high risk of becoming criminals is also important (i.e, those who have demonstrated behavioural/anti-social issues.)

Combine this with improved support for parents such as mandatory & optional parenting classes.

I propose we chop off their heads first.

Then we go with the fingers one by one if they continue to offend after that.

We would be no better than the criminals that do this to be honest and it would achieve nothing apart from denying someone part of their own body that we have no right to take from them.

Im saying that the church wielded far more power up to about 15 years ago. the morals and values that they tried to instill within the country, however flawed, kept alot of people on the straight and narrow.

their influence in society has wained (sp?) to such an extent that they are no longer the enforcers they once were.

govt and church were pretty much one in the same for long periods of irish history.
