What can I use to avoid making noise on the floor? Can pullups be replaced?

Two questions but I have wooden floors and I'd rather not be making all sorts of noise; I heard an exercise mat would work but how thick should it be?

Also is there any way at all that I can replace pullups with exercises that don't use equipment?
